BACKGROUND: People with diabetes are at high risk of foot complications that can lead to lower extremity amputations. National standards suggest that early assessment and management by a podiatry led multidisciplinary high-risk foot clinic (HRFC) helps to reduce complications. This review is a retrospective audit of the Central Coast Local Health District (CCLHD) podiatry department service utilisation in people with diabetes who had undergone a minor foot amputation.
METHODS: All people with diabetes who had minor foot amputations in the calendar year 2017 in the CCLHD in New South Wales wer

BACKGROUND: Learning anatomy is an essential part of the process of becoming a podiatrist. Anatomical knowledge underpins the assessment, diagnosis and management of lower limb pathology and competent professional practice. However, anatomy remains a challenging subject for students and educators. We have therefore developed an application to aid students in their continued learning and revision of anatomy in podiatric undergraduate training.
METHODS: This qualitative exploration sought the experiences and perceptions of six undergraduate podiatry students as they used the application alongsi

Multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach has been shown to reduce diabetic foot ulcerations (DFUs) and lower extremity amputations (LEAs), but there is heterogeneity between team members and interventions. Podiatrists have been suggested as "gatekeepers" for the prevention and management of DFUs. The purpose of our study is to review the effect of podiatric interventions in MDTs on DFUs and LEAs. We conducted a systematic review of available literature. Data's heterogeneity about DFU outcomes made it impossible for us to include it in a meta-analysis, but we identified 12 studies fulfilling inclu

ImportancePlantar heel pain (PHP) contributes to reduced quality of life and is costly to manage. Persons with PHP are infrequently referred to a physical therapist after presenting to primary care or podiatry.ObjectiveThe study objective was to compare the cost-effectiveness of usual podiatry care (uPOD) plus physical therapist treatment with that of uPOD alone in the management of PHP.DesignA cost-effectiveness analysis from societal and health care sector perspectives and a 3-year time horizon was performed alongside a randomized clinical trial. Intention to treat was used as the base case,

Dermatomycosis, including tinea pedis and onychomycosis, is frequently encountered in routine medical care in Japan. Identifying the risk factors for tinea pedis and onychomycosis development is important to encourage hospital visits by patients who may have these diseases but who are not undergoing any treatment. This approach may lead to the prevention of disease progression and the spread of infections to others. Risk factors for onychomycosis development have been reported both in and outside of Japan. However, most of the risk factors were identified based on a multicenter, questionnaire

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot osteomyelitis is a common infection where treatment involves multiple services, including infectious diseases, podiatry, and pathology. Despite its ubiquity in the hospital, consensus on much of its management is lacking.
METHODS: Representatives from infectious diseases, podiatry, and pathology interested in quality improvement developed multidisciplinary institutional recommendations culminating in an educational intervention describing optimal diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to diabetic foot osteomyelitis (DFO). Knowledge acquisition was assessed by preinter

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that healthcare professionals find it more difficult to correctly diagnose dermatological conditions in the nonwhite patient demographic. People of colour experience higher rates of delayed and misdiagnosis, contributing to an increased mortality risk and increased health inequalities that remain widespread throughout the health care setting. This study aimed to investigate podiatry student's ability, confidence, approaches and perceptions in diagnosing dermatology pathologies in different skin tones.
METHODS: A mixed methods explanatory sequential design was und

The coronavirus disease of 2019 pandemic is driving significant change in the health-care system and disrupting the best practices for diabetic limb preservation, leaving large numbers of patients without care. Patients with diabetes and foot ulcers are at increased risk for infections, hospitalization, amputations, and death. Podiatric care is associated with fewer diabetes-related amputations, emergency room visits, hospitalizations, length-of-stay, and costs. However, podiatrists must mobilize and adopt the new paradigm of shifts away from hospital care to community-based care. Implementing

Basic foot care is a real need of people experiencing homelessness. To improve access to foot health for this group, three services structured to provide healthcare support for people experiencing homelessness collaborated in metropolitan Melbourne, Australia: an established nurse-led Homeless Persons Program (HPP), a specialty community health podiatry clinic servicing people experiencing homelessness, and a charity supporting disadvantaged communities providing free socks, foot first aid kits and second-hand footwear for distribution by nurses and podiatrists of participating services. Podiatry screening of children is a common practice, which occurs largely without adequate data to support the need for such activity. Such programs may be either formalised, or more ad hoc in nature, depending upon the use of guidelines or existing models. Although often not used, the well-established criteria for assessing the merits of screening programs can greatly increase the understanding as to whether such practices are actually worthwhile. This review examines the purpose of community health screening in the Australian context, as occurs for tuberculosis, breast, cervical and prostate

Doppler is the most commonly utilised vascular assessment tool by podiatrists in Australia and the United Kingdom. Doppler is a key component of many international guidelines for vascular assessment. Used alongside pressure measurements such as ankle and toe-brachial indices, Doppler assists podiatrists to diagnose, triage and subsequently manage patients with peripheral arterial disease. This commentary aims to clarify the importance, technique, and interpretation of continuous wave handheld Doppler in podiatry practice. This commentary presents discussion on the equipment and optimal test co
