Ten Hyptis suaveolens hairy root lines were established by infecting nodal explants with K599+pGus-GFP+ and ATCC15834+pTDT strains from Agrobacterium rhizogenes. Penile condylomata were eradicated from 26 (70%) of 37 and from 15 (63%) of 24 uncircumsized men with penile warts who performed one course of self-treatment with 0.5% podophyllotoxin in ethanol, which was applied twice daily for four and five days, respectively. In order to investigate the efficacy of treatment modalities favoured by us against flat acetowhite penile human papillomavirus (HPV)-induced lesions, we studied retrospectively standardized medical records of 81 men who had been treated for this condition. The patients were treated surgically with diathermy (n=32) or with a combination of both chemical (topical application of podophyllotoxin) and surgical treatment (n=49). The mean number of clinic visits was 9.1 (range 1-19), during a follow-up time of mean 30.9 (range 1-104) months for 78 of the men, 3 of them only visited the clinic once.

INTRODUCTION: DSPE-mPEG2000 is a phospholipid and polyethylene glycol conjugate used in various biomedical applications, including drug delivery, gene transfection, and vaccine delivery. Due to the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of DSPE-mPEG2000, it can serve as a drug carrier, encapsulating drugs in liposomes to enhance stability and efficacy.

Lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) is a commercially important subtropical fruit. Lychee downy blight (LDB), caused by Peronophythora litchii, poses a major threat to lychee production. OBJECTIVE: To assess the distribution and systemic toxicity of podophyllotoxin-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (POD-NLC) after topical application on the cervical mucosa in Tibet minipigs.
METHODS: Twelve Tibet mini-pigs were randomized into test group and control group to receive topical application of 0.5% POD-NLC and 0.5% POD tincture, respectively, on the cervical mucosa. Cervical mucosal irritation, targeted distribution and systemic absorption of POD were observed at different time points within 24 h after the drug application.

High-performance liquid chromatography was used for quantitative determination of podophyllotoxin in serum subsequent to repeated applications of a 0.5% ethanolic preparation on condylomata acuminata. The drug was not detectable in the serum of ten men treated with < or = 50 microliters. Topical application of podophyllin solution, long considered the therapy of first choice against condylomata acuminata, can no longer be recommended due to its low efficacy and gross toxicity.
