Ovarian structure and oogenesis of the extremophile viviparous teleost Poecilia mexicana (Poeciliidae) from an active sulfur spring cave in Southern Mexico.

The structure of the ovary and oogenesis of Poecilia mexicana from an active sulfur spring cave is documented. Poecilia mexicana is the only poeciliid adapted to a subterranean environment with high hydrogen sulfide levels and extreme hypoxic conditions. Twenty females were captured throughout one year at Cueva del Azufre, located in the State of Tabasco in Southern Mexico. Ovaries were processed with histological techniques. P. mexicana has a single, ovoid ovary with ovigerous lamella that project to the ovarian lumen. The ovarian wall presents abundant loose connective tissue, numerous melan

Using GC Content to Compare Recombination Patterns on the Sex Chromosomes and Autosomes of the Guppy, Poecilia reticulata, and Its Close Outgroup Species.

Genetic and physical mapping of the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) have shown that recombination patterns differ greatly between males and females. Crossover events occur evenly across the chromosomes in females, but in male meiosis they are restricted to the tip furthest from the centromere of each chromosome, creating very high recombination rates per megabase, as in pseudoautosomal regions of mammalian sex chromosomes. We used GC content to indirectly infer recombination patterns on guppy chromosomes, based on evidence that recombination is associated with GC-biased gene conversion, so that ge

Analysis of clasp2 Transcription Pattern in Male Germ Cells during Spermatogenesis: A Comparative Study in Zebrafish (Danio rerio) and Guppy (Poecilia reticulata).

Cytoplasmic linker-associated protein-2 (CLASP2) is a member of the CLIP-associating proteins (CLASPs) family involved in the structure and function of microtubules and Golgi apparatus. Several studies performed using different mammalian and non-mammalian model organisms reported that CLASP2 controls microtubule dynamics and the organization of microtubule networks. In Drosophila and mice, an important role of CLASP2 during the development of germ cell lines has been uncovered. However, no study has clearly defined its role during fish germ cell differentiation. In the present study, we used t

Prevalence and Histopathologic Study of Lernaea cyprinacea in Two Species of Ornamental Fish (Poecilia latipinna and Xiphophorus helleri) in Kerman, South-East Iran.

OBJECTIVE: Lernaeids are crustacean parasites that are globally distributed among freshwater and marine fish. Approximately 110 species of Lernaeids have been divided into 14 genera. The most common species of Lernaeids is Lernaea cyprinacea, which has been transmitted to ornamental fish worldwide. The economic importance of L. cyprinacea is increasing because of the epidemic caused by the parasite in most of the ornamental fish breeding centers in different parts of the world. The parasite affects its host's health, decreases growth rate, and causes abnormal metabolic activity. Accumulation o

Effects of crude extracts of a saxitoxin-producer strain of the cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii on the swimming behavior of wild and laboratory reared guppy Poecilia vivipara.

The cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii is an invasive species in water supply reservoirs worldwide, which can produces cylindrospermopsins and saxitoxins. In the wild, guppy (Poecilia vivipara) can be exposed to cyanotoxins, but those born and reared in laboratory are free of this contact. The aim of this paper was to comparatively measure the locomotor activity of 'wild' and 'lab' P. vivipara before and after exposure to crude extracts of two different cultures of C. raciborskii (CYRF-01), a saxitoxin-procucer strain. The movement of each fish was recorded using an image monitoring

Co-exposure of iron oxide nanoparticles with glyphosate herbicides in Poecilia reticulata: Fish liver damages is reversible during iron accumulation and elimination period.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are advanced materials for water remediation technologies. It is therefore relevant to evaluate the cellular and tissue behavior of fishes in response to IONPs and their associations with agrochemicals such as glyphosate (GLY) and glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs). Iron accumulation, tissue integrity and lipid distribution in the hepatocytes of Poecilia reticulata (guppy) were investigated in a control group and in groups exposed to soluble iron ions, namely IFe (0.3 mgFe/L), IONPs (0.3 mgFe/L), and IONPs, associated with GLY (0.65 mg/L), GBHs 0.65 mgGLY/L (IO

Population genetics of Lebistes (Poecilia) reticulatus Peters (Poeciliidae; Pisces). I. Effects of radiation-induced mutations on the segregation ratio in postirradiation F 2 .

Wild-type germ cells of the viviparous fish, Lebistes (Poecilia) reticulatus, were irradiated in the stages of oogonia, spermatogonia or spermatozoa with 1000 R of X rays at a dose-rate of 200-220 R/min. The grown-up fish were mated after irradiation or sham treatment to unirradiated mutant fish homozygous for three recessive gene loci, causing albinism, lack of yellow and reddish pigmentation ("blue" constitution), and diminution of the size of melanophores ("blond" constitution). As compared to the control series, the phenotypic segregation ratios in the adult F(2) generation after irradiati

Identification of Loci Controlling the Dwarfism Trait in the White Sailfin Molly (Poecilia latipinna) Using Genome-Wide Association Studies Based on Genotyping-By-Sequencing.

Dwarfism is a condition defined by low harvest weight in fish, but also results in strange body figures which may have potential for the selective breeding of new ornamental fish strains. The objectives of this study are to reveal the physiological causes of dwarfism and identify the genetic loci controlling this trait in the white sailfin molly. Skeletons of dwarf and normal sailfin mollies were observed by X-ray radioscopy and skeletal staining. Genome-wide association studies based on genotyping-by-sequencing (n = 184) were used to map candidate genomic regions associated with the dwarfism

Iron oxide nanoparticles (γ-Fe2O3) combined with microcystin-LR induce severe histopathological damage with potential for recovery in the intestinal tissue of Poecilia reticulata.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (γ-Fe2O3) (IONPs) have been explored for environmental remediation, particularly in removing cyanotoxins caused by eutrophication in aquatic systems. This study assessed the intestinal toxicity of microcystin-LR (MIC-LR), a hepatotoxic cyanotoxin, and maghemite-type IONPs, both alone and in combination, in adult female Poecilia reticulata. A total of 300 fish were divided into five groups: control, Fe³⁺ ions (IFe, 0.3 mg/L), IONPs (0.3 mg/L), MIC-LR (1 µg/L), and IONPs + MIC-LR (0.3 mg/L and 1 µg/L, respectively). Environmentally relevant concentrations were used, base

Biosynthesis, mosquitocidal and antibacterial properties of Toddalia asiatica-synthesized silver nanoparticles: do they impact predation of guppy Poecilia reticulata against the filariasis mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus?

Mosquito-borne diseases represent a deadly threat for millions of people worldwide. Furthermore, pathogens and parasites polluting water also constitute a severe plague for populations of developing countries. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgN) were biosynthesized a cheap aqueous extract of T. asiatica leaves as reducing and stabilizing agent. The formation of nanoparticle was confirmed by surface Plasmon resonance band illustrated in UV-vis spectrophotometer. AgN were characterized by FTIR, SEM, EDX, and XRD analyses. AgN were mostly spherical in shape, crystalline in nature, with face

Sub-acute exposure of male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) to environmentally relevant concentrations of PFOA and GenX induces significant changes in the testis transcriptome and reproductive traits.

Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are frequently detected in the environment and are linked to adverse reproductive health outcomes in humans. Although legacy PFAS have been phased out due to their toxicity, alternative PFAS are increasingly used despite the fact that information on their toxic effects on reproductive traits is particularly scarce. Here, we exposed male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) for a short period (21 days) to an environmentally realistic concentration (1 ppb) of PFOA, a legacy PFAS, and its replacement compound, GenX, to assess their impact on reproductive traits

Therapeutic Effects of Psoralea corylifolia and Morus alba Aqueous Extracts on Tetrahymena pyriformis-Infected Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) and Underlying Transcriptomic Mechanisms: Implications for Ciliate Parasite Control.

Tetrahymena pyriformis is biologically similar to Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, the parasite that causes "white spot disease" in fish. Because it has immune evasion genes and grows quickly, T. pyriformis serves as an ideal model for developing treatments against I. multifiliis and related parasites. This study tested water extracts from 10 traditional Chinese herbs against T. pyriformis and identified 5 with strong antiparasitic effects: Morus alba, Psoralea corylifolia, Sophora flavescens, Polygonum cuspidatum, and Pomegranate Peel. Combination tests showed that certain pairs, especially P. c

Implementation of guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata), and a novel larvicide (Pyriproxyfen) product (Sumilarv 2MR) for dengue control in Cambodia: A qualitative study of acceptability, sustainability and community engagement.

BACKGROUND: In Cambodia dengue vector control activities are focused on larviciding with temephos and pyrethroid based adulticide sprays to which Aedes have been shown to be increasingly resistant. A cluster randomized trial assessed the impact of using biological control tools (guppy fish, pyriproxyfen (PPF), and Communication for Behavioral Impact (COMBI) activities in combination), which would be used in a value comparison to traditional chemical control tools. Given these new intervention methods, a qualitative assessment was designed in order to represent the quality of understanding, acc

Guppy Y Chromosome Integrity Maintained by Incomplete Recombination Suppression.

The loss of recombination triggers divergence between the sex chromosomes and promotes degeneration of the sex-limited chromosome. Several livebearers within the genus Poecilia share a male-heterogametic sex chromosome system that is roughly 20 Myr old, with extreme variation in the degree of Y chromosome divergence. In Poecilia picta, the Y is highly degenerate and associated with complete X chromosome dosage compensation. In contrast, although recombination is restricted across almost the entire length of the sex chromosomes in Poecilia reticulata and Poecilia wingei, divergence between the

Mangrove Fishes Rely on Emersion Behavior and Physiological Tolerance to Persist in Sulfidic Environments.

Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is a potent respiratory toxin that makes sulfidic environments tolerable to only a few organisms. We report the presence of fishes ( Kryptolebias marmoratus , Poecilia orri , Gambusia sp., and Dormitator maculatus ) in Belizean mangrove pools with extremely high H 2 S concentrations (up to 1,166 μM) that would be lethal for most fishes. Thus, we asked whether the three most prevalent species ( Kryptolebias , Poecilia , and Gambusia ) persist in sulfidic pools because they are exceptionally H 2 S tolerant and/or because they can leave water (emerse) and completely avoid

Extreme heterogeneity in sex chromosome differentiation and dosage compensation in livebearers.

Once recombination is halted between the X and Y chromosomes, sex chromosomes begin to differentiate and transition to heteromorphism. While there is a remarkable variation across clades in the degree of sex chromosome divergence, far less is known about the variation in sex chromosome differentiation within clades. Here, we combined whole-genome and transcriptome sequencing data to characterize the structure and conservation of sex chromosome systems across Poeciliidae, the livebearing clade that includes guppies. We found that the Poecilia reticulata XY system is much older than previously t
