Pertussis in Poland in 2022.

INTRODUCTION: The epidemiological situation of pertussis in Poland in 2022 was influenced by the cancellation of the COVID-19 epidemic and the introduction of an epidemic threat. Decisions related to the gradual easing of restrictions on social contacts and the abolition of the obligation to wear masks caused the number of pertussis cases to slowly start to increase. The most effective strategy for preventing pertussis remains the immunization of children in accordance with the National Immunization Program, and in the case of adults, vaccination repeated systematically every 10 years and immu

Chickenpox in Poland in 2020.

INTRODUCTION: Chickenpox is an infectious disease caused by the varicella zoster virus. The characteristic feature of this virus is very high visibility of 90-95%. The most common connection is direct contact with the disease or via droplets. The United States was the first country to introduce a universal, population-based childhood varicella vaccination program in 1995. In its 25 years of implementation, this program has significantly reduced the burden of chickenpox. There was a more than 97% reduction in varicella incidence and a 90% reduction in varicella-related hospitalizations and deat

Rubella in Poland in 2018.

INTRODUCTION: Rubella is the disease subject to the elimination programme coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO). Generally, rubella is an infection of mild course among children but in the case of pregnant women, who are not immunized, the probability of the occurrence of severe congenital abnormalities (congenital rubella syndrome) may amount to 95%. The strategy of the countries belonging to the WHO European Region is directed to the interruption of the rubella virus transmission in the environment in order to prevent the cases of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). Pertussis in Poland in 2017.

INTRODUCTION: After the introduction of compulsory pertussis vaccination in Poland in 1960, there was a sharp decline in the incidence of this disease. For several years, however, an increase in the number of reported cases has been observed. In 2015 and 2016, the incidence was 12.9 and 17.8 per 100 000 population, respectively (1). The year 2017 can be treated as an inter-epidemic year in which there was a significant decrease (by 55.1%) incidence to 8.0 per 100 000 population compared to the previous year. INTRODUCTION: In Poland, the high incidence of pertussis has been maintained for 10 years – in 2016 it was 17,77 per 100,000 population and it was 38% more compared to the previous year. The high percentage of pertussis is still present in those who are older, who may be a source of infection for non-immunized or not fully immunized newborns and infants. The most effective prevention strategy remains the implementation of vaccinations in accordance with the current calendar.
