Maize (Zea mays) pollen tubes grow in the styles at a rate of >1 microm/sec. We describe here a gene required to attain that striking rate. The aberrant pollen transmission 1 (apt1) gene of maize was identified by an Ac-tagged mutation that displayed a severe pollen transmission deficit in heterozygotes. Rare apt1 homozygotes can be recovered, aided by phenotypic selection for Ac homozygotes. Therefore, caged bees were allowed to perform 30 min of defecation/training flights every second day before flight performance of pollen-fed bees and pollen-deprived bees older than 16 days were compared in a flight mill. Urticaria is a common condition, seldom of allergic origin. It is however not always possible to find the provoking allergen. Airborne pollen are important allergens that cause sensitization in allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma. Our aim was to detect the pollen in the atmosphere of Kayseri, to present a pollen calendar, and to detect the allergenic level of these pollen by performing skin tests on patients. The incidence of skin-tested sensitivity to olive pollen allergens among subjects with suspected atopic respiratory allergy was investigated in various populations of Israelis. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Defensin-polyproline-linked proteins are relevant allergens in Asteraceae pollen. Depending on their prevalence and amount in the pollen source, they are potent allergens, as shown for the major mugwort pollen allergen Art v 1.
