In vitro kinematic analysis of a new patient-matched polycarbonate urethane radiocarpal interposition arthroplasty.

Current salvage procedures for patients with post-traumatic wrist osteoarthritis include excision of bone or tissue and/or fusion of wrist bones, making all surgical salvage procedures irreversible. Some of these salvage procedures decrease wrist mobility. A novel patient-matched polyurethane carbonate (PCU) radiocarpal interposition arthroplasty has recently been proposed as a reversible, motion-preserving solution. This experimental study evaluates the effect of the PCU radiocarpal implant on wrist range of motion (ROM) and carpal kinematics. Additionally, implant displacement is assessed du

Evaluation and optimization of polycarbonate track-etched (PCTE) membranes for direct methanol fuel cells.

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) offer a promising power source by utilizing liquid-state methanol as fuel, providing easy storage and transportability. Currently, DMFCs commonly employ perfluorosulfonic acid membranes, such as the well-known Nafion membrane, as proton exchange membranes. However, perfluorosulfonic acid membranes have significant drawbacks in DMFCs, including a high crossover rate, substantial swelling, poor thermal stability, and elevated costs. The crossover of methanol fuel to the cathode side is particularly detrimental as it can poison the precious Pt catalyst, leading

A DOPO-Based Compound Containing Aminophenyl Silicone Oil for Reducing Fire Hazards of Polycarbonate.

A novel P/N/Si-containing flame retardant (marked as DASO) was synthesized through an Atherton-Todd reaction between 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phospha-phenanthrene-10-oxide and aminophenyl silicone oil, and further used for reducing fire hazards of polycarbonate (PC). The chemical structure of DASO was verified via FTIR, 1H, and 31P NMR. Upon the incorporation of 2 wt% DASO, the FRPC composite achieved a high limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 32.2% and a desired UL-94 V-0 rating. In this case, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total smoke production (TSP) were reduced by 26% and 44% as compared w

Succinylated Jeffamine ED-2003 coated polycarbonate chips for low-cost analytical microarrays.

Analytical microarrays feature great capabilities for simultaneous detection and quantification of multiple analytes in a single measurement. In this work, we present a rapid and simple method for bulk preparation of microarrays on polycarbonate sheets. Succinylated Jeffamine® ED-2003 was screen printed on polycarbonate sheets to create a polyfunctional shielding layer by baking at 100 °C. After microdispension of capture probes (antibodies, oligonucleotides, or small molecules) in a microarray format, chips were assembled with a flow cell from double-sided tape. It was shown that the shieldin

Electrospun mat of tyrosine-derived polycarbonate fibers for potential use as tissue scaffolding material.

Desaminotyrosyl-tyrosine ethyl ester (DTE) and desaminotyrosyl-tyrosine (DT) were used as monomers in the synthesis of two tyrosine-derived polycarbonates: the slow degrading homopolymer poly(DTE carbonate) and the fast degrading co-polymer poly(DTE-co-20%DT carbonate). Ultrafine fibers of these polymers were successfully fabricated using an electrospinning process. The effects of some solution and process parameters (i.e., polymer concentration, electrostatic field strength and solvent system) on morphological appearance and diameters of the obtained fibers were investigated by scanning elect

Hemiacetal Ester Side Chains as a Mild Protecting Group for Carboxylic Acids in Polycarbonate Backbones.

Hemiacetal esters are versatile functional groups known for their unique ability to degrade under mild conditions such as exposure to water, alcohols, organic acids, or heat. In this study, hemiacetal esters are introduced as mild, transient protecting groups for carboxylic acids along polycarbonate backbones. A six-membered cyclic carbonate monomer is synthesized by reacting ethyl vinyl ether with a carboxylic acid precursor, demonstrating high efficiency and stability under nucleophilic polymerization conditions. Potential susceptibilities of the hemiacetal esters to transacetalization react

Vaginal host response to polycarbonate urethane, an alternative material for the repair of pelvic organ prolapse.

Complications following surgical repair of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) with polypropylene mesh (PPM) are common. Recent data attributes complications, in part, to stiffness mismatches between the vagina and PPM. We developed a 3D printed elastomeric membrane (EM) from a softer polymer, polycarbonate urethane (PCU). EMs were manufactured with more material given the low inherent material strength of PCU. We hypothesized that the EMs would be associated with an improved host response as compared to PPM. A secondary goal was to optimize the material distribution (fiber width and device thickness)

Electrospun glass nanofibers to strengthen polycarbonate plastic glass toward photoluminescent smart materials.

Electrospun glass nanofibers (GNFs) were used to strengthen polycarbonate (PC) to create long-persistent photoluminescent and fluorescent smart materials such as afterglow concrete and smart window. Physical integration of lanthanide-activated aluminate (LA) nanoparticles (NPs) yielded transparent GNFs@PC smart sheets. Spectral investigations utilizing photoluminescence and CIE Lab parameters were performed to confirm that the translucent appearance of GNFs@PC changed to green when exposed to UV light. This fluorescence activity was quickly reversible for the GNFs@PC hybrids with low concentra

A Polypyrrole-Polycarbonate Polyurethane Elastomer Alleviates Cardiac Arrhythmias via Improving Bio-Conductivity.

Myocardial fibrosis, resulting from myocardial infarction (MI), significantly alters cardiac electrophysiological properties. As fibrotic scar tissue forms, its resistance to incoming action potentials increases, leading to cardiac arrhythmia, and eventually sudden cardiac death or heart failure. Biomaterials are gaining increasing attention as an approach for addressing post-MI arrhythmias. The current study investigates the hypothesis that a bio-conductive epicardial patch can electrically synchronize isolated cardiomyocytes in vitro and rescue arrhythmic hearts in vivo. A new conceived bioc

Evaluation of the potential health risks of substances migrating from polycarbonate replacement baby bottles.

Since the European Commission prohibited the use of bisphenol A in the production of polycarbonate (PC) baby bottles, many other materials have replaced PC for the manufacture of this type of food contact materials. In the present study, the potential migration risks associated with these alternative materials were investigated. First, all substances were evaluated for endocrine disruptive (ED) activity by using different existing lists of (suspected) ED chemicals. Next, the potential non-ED risks were assessed. A distinction was made between migrants listed in Annex I of European Regulation 1

Room-Temperature Depolymerization of Waste Polycarbonate and Polyester Enabled by an Electrochemically Generated Local Alkaline Microenvironment.

Driven by massive production and inadequate end-of-life management, polycarbonate and polyester plastic pollution has become one of the most critical environmental crises. To address this mounting challenge, decades of research have yielded a variety of polycarbonate and polyester recycling technologies. Nevertheless, the majority of existing methods either afford low-quality, low-value products or depend on harsh conditions such as high temperature, high pressure, and corrosive bases or acids, severely restricting their scalability and economic feasibility for industrial-scale implementation.

GSH-Triggered Nitric Oxide-Releasing Polycarbonate Nanoplatform for Synergistic Gas-Sonodynamic Antitumor Therapy.

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) emerges as a promising noninvasive modality for deep tumors but is hindered by the hypoxic tumor microenvironment and glutathione (GSH)-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging. Herein, we report a GSH-responsive nanoplatform fabricated from an mPEG-b-PMNC copolymer, enabling spatiotemporal codelivery of nitric oxide (NO) donors and the sonosensitizer chlorin e6 (Ce6) via self-assembled micelles. Upon exposure to elevated intracellular GSH, the micelles disintegrate to release NO and Ce6 selectively. The released NO attenuates hypoxia through downregulation o

Sustainable Harnessing of Waste Polycarbonate for Synthesizing Activated Furans to Generate Stenhouse Adducts on Polymer Surface.

Plastics are versatile materials, offering lightweight, durable, and affordable solutions across various industries. However, their non-degradable nature poses challenges by end of their life. This study presented an innovative carbonyl extraction method to utilize waste poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PC) as reaction precursor to synthesis of activated furan as precursor for photoswitchable Stenhouse adducts. This innovative chemical strategy not only generated N,N'-functionalized barbiturates but also provided an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional synthesis methods. The

Reactive compatibilization of polycarbonate and poly(methyl methacrylate) in the presence of a novel transesterification catalyst SnCl2·2H2O.

We compare the effectiveness of various known organometallic transesterification catalysts with a novel SnCl(2)·2H(2)O transesterification catalyst in the formation of homogeneous PC/PMMA blends with single T(g). It is shown that SnCl(2)·2H(2)O works more efficiently than the other organometallic transesterification catalysts. Even 0.1% (wt/wt) of SnCl(2)·2H(2)O is enough to establish an interaction between PC and PMMA phases, leading to the formation of a homogeneous PC/PMMA blend with single T(g) and single degradation temperature. FTIR, (1)H NMR, and XRD studies provide evidence of the form

Chronic inflammation from polycarbonate motility peg inhibits osteogenesis in a human hydroxyapatite orbital implant.

The histologic findings of a pegged hydroxyapatite orbital implant removed due to chronic inflammation and pain are described. A 44-year-old woman underwent explantation of a hydroxyapatite sphere and polycarbonate motility peg due to chronic redness, swelling, discharge, and pain. Histology revealed complete fibrovascularization of the implant, with approximately 90% ossification. No bone marrow was identified. Histologic sections revealed fibrous connective tissue at the periphery of a sclerotic bony mass with a granulomatous inflammatory infiltrate at the motility peg aperture. There were n

Oligo(ethylene glycol)-functionalized polycarbonate lipid nanoparticles for mRNA delivery with attenuated PEG immunogenicity.

mRNA vaccines delivered by lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) have enabled clinical success in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating LNPs as a promising nanocarrier for mRNA delivery. Despite this advance, use of PEGylated lipid (PEG-lipid) in LNPs has raised concerns about PEG-associated immunogenicity upon repeated dosing. Recent studies reported hydrophilic polymer lipids as replacement of PEG-lipid, which demonstrated the potential to reduce PEG-associated immune recognition. Most of these PEG-lipid alternatives are based on polymers with non-degradable polymer backbone. In this study, we
