Co-conversion of wood and polyvinyl chloride to valuable chemicals and high-quality solid fuel.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-containing waste streams are difficult to recycle due to high chlorine content in PVC. Toxic dioxins or corrosive hydrogen chloride (HCl) vapor released from improper management of PVC-containing wastes can cause severe environmental pollution and human health problems. While PVC is usually treated as contamination and burden in waste recycling, a novel recycling approach was developed in this study to leverage PVC as an asset. Specifically, red oak and PVC were co-converted in γ-Valerolactone, a green biomass-derivable solvent. During the co-conversion, PVC-derived HC

Online TG-FTIR-MS analysis of the catalytic pyrolysis of polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride microplastics.

Microplastics (MPs) are frequently detected in urban waters, which would pose a threat to human health through the food chain. Thus, efficient approaches to the elimination of MPs are urgently required. Pyrolysis is a powerful technique for the potential treatment of MPs. The online thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared reflection-Mass spectrometry (TG-FTIR-MS) is applied for tracking the pyrolysis process of representative polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs in urban waters, together with or without the FeAlOx catalyst. TG could quantitatively determine the decomposition

Synthesis of Methyldopa-Tin Complexes and Their Applicability as Photostabilizers for the Protection of Polyvinyl Chloride against Photolysis.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a ubiquitous thermoplastic that is produced on an enormous industrial scale to meet growing global demand. PVC has many favorable properties and is used in various applications. However, photodecomposition occurs when harsh conditions, such as high temperatures in the presence of oxygen and moisture, are encountered. Thus, PVC is blended with additives to increase its resistance to deterioration caused by exposure to ultraviolet light. In the current research, five methyldopa-tin complexes were synthesized and characterized. The methyldopa-tin complexes were mixed w

[Assessment of hazards posed by metallo-organic compounds :' in industrial production and processing of polyvinyl chloride].

BACKGROUND: In Poland, the production and processing of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are a significant part of industrial output. Yearly over 400 thousand tons of pure PVC are manufactured. Workers in the PVC industry are exposed to several organic compounds, including organic compounds of tin, barium, calcium, zinc and lead that are used as PVC stabilizers. In Poland there has been no research on the hazard posed by metallo-organic compounds in the work environment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-two workstations in five industrial plants were studied. Air was sampled with a sampler that absorbed

Photoaged Polyvinyl Chloride Microplastics Aggravate Airway Epithelial Barrier Dysfunction via TXNIP-NLRP3-Mediated Inflammatory Amplification.

Microplastics are ubiquitous in the atmosphere and may be inhaled into the respiratory system to cause adverse health effects. Photoaging of microplastics in the atmosphere is inevitable, which changes their toxic effects greatly, yet the impacts and underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, poly(vinyl chloride) microplastics (PVC-MPs), commonly detected in the atmosphere, were selected to investigate the effects of photoaging on pulmonary toxicological responses at 7 days after a single intratracheal instillation in a mouse model. Photoaging enhanced the abundance of oxyg

Polyvinyl chloride promotes radioresistance in hepatocellular carcinoma by inhibiting radiotherapy-induced CD8⁺ T cell differentiation.

Radiotherapy is standard-of-care treatment for intermediate and advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); however, resistance remains widespread. Microplastics are detectable in various tumors and may disrupt immune responses, but evidence regarding the role of microplastics in radiotherapy is scarce. Here we show that various types of microplastics are detectable in 52 of the 72 HCC samples we examine, but only polyvinyl chloride (PVC) impairs radiotherapy efficacy. Mechanistically, irradiation enhances histone lactylation, which promotes transcription of HMG-CoA reductase in HCC cells, thereb

Comparison of displacement of polyvinyl chloride and silicone leftsided double-lumen tubes during lateral positioning.

BACKGROUND: Compared to an equivalent sized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) double-lumen tube (DLT), a silicone DLT has a shorter endobronchial segment. The aim of this study was to compare the incidence of clinically significant displacement of left-sided PVC and silicone DLTs after a positional change to a lateral position from a supine position and determine its effect on the need for DLT repositioning for successful lung separation in patients undergoing thoracic surgery. METHODS: One hundred eight adult patients requiring one-lung ventilation were randomly divided into group P (PVC DLT, n = 54)

Melatonin-mediated biochemical and redox adjustments alleviate polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride derived microplastic toxicity in maize.

Microplastic (MPs) -induced stress poses an emerging threat to crop productivity; however, effective mitigation strategies remain limited. This study elucidated the physiological and biochemical impacts of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE) microplastics and evaluated the potential role of melatonin (MEL) in alleviating MP-induced toxicity in maize (Zea mays L.). Five maize varieties (FH2018, Malka, FH1046, FH2335, R4040) were exposed to MPs (400 mg kg-1 mixed in soil), followed by foliar application of MEL (5 mg L-1, 21.5 μM). Exposure to both MPs significantly curtailed maize pla

Cadmium and polyvinyl chloride microplastics induce mitochondrial damage and apoptosis under oxidative stress in duck kidney.

Polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC-MPs) and Cadmium (Cd) are widely occurring water pollutants that interact with each other to exert toxic effects. As a waterfowl, Muscovy duck is more susceptible to PVC-MPs and Cd than land poultry. In this study, Muscovy duck was used as a research model, and 10 mg/L PVC-MPs and 50 mg/kg Cd were used alone and in combine to explore the effect on the kidney of Muscovy duck. We found that treatment of Cd or PVC-MPs alone changed the kidney weight, increased creatinine and urea nitrogen content, and disrupted oxidative balance and macro/trace element metabo

Covalent Immobilization of N-Acetylcysteine on a Polyvinyl Chloride Substrate Prevents Bacterial Adhesion and Biofilm Formation.

Biofilm formation and antimicrobial resistance at surgical implant sites result in high morbidity and mortality. Identifying novel molecules that inhibit biofilm formation to coat surgical biomaterials is essential. One such compound is N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a potent antioxidant precursor for glutathione, necessary in mammalian cells and known to disrupt/prevent biofilms. In this study, NAC was covalently immobilized onto functionalized polyvinyl chloride surfaces using plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) treatment that achieves covalent binding without the need for linker groups. NAC i

Comparison between the intraoperative use of polyvinyl chloride cover and surgical compresses for preventing postoperative adhesions.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Surgical compresses used for retraction during major abdominal and pelvic procedures lead to postoperative adhesion formation resulting from damage to the visceral peritoneum. This study investigates whether polyvinyl chloride (PVC) covers cause less postsurgical adhesion and inflammation than surgical compresses in an animal model. METHODS: Female Wistar albino rats (n = 160) were divided into three groups (compress, PVC cover and control), which were then divided into 16 subgroups (n = 10/group). All animals underwent midline laparotomy and cecal abrasion. A metal retrac

Occupational exposure to polyvinyl chloride as a risk factor for testicular cancer evaluated in a case-control study.

Occupational exposures were assessed in a case-control study on testicular cancer using self-administered questionnaires. In total, answers were obtained for 148 (91%) cases and 315 (87%) controls. Of the cases, 101 had seminoma and 47 had embryonal testicular cancer. An increased odds ratio (OR) was found for exposure to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) yielding an OR of 6.6 (95% confidence interval, 1.4-32). The risk increased further if cases with self-reported cryptorchidism or orchitis were excluded. Six of the 7 exposed cases had seminoma. Exposure to other types of plastics did not significantl

Biological alterations of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics on Danio rerio at environmentally relevant concentrations - risk assessment.

Microplastics (MPs) are one of the fastest-growing sources of pollution and have become a substantial risk to both the environment and human health. Hence, the present investigation was conducted to assess the potential toxic effects of Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs (Treatment I- 3 µg/L and Treatment II- 30 µg/L) on D. rerio for 20 days. The PVC-MPs were characterised by SEM, XRD, DLS and FTIR analyses, and their presence was confirmed in the gastrointestinal tract of the fish. When compare to the control group, the studied locomotive, behavioural, blood (haematology) and tissue (gill, gut and

Development of S-Nitroso-N-Acetylpenicillamine Impregnated Medical Grade Polyvinyl Chloride for Antimicrobial Medical Device Interfaces.

In the clinical setting, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) accounts for 25% of all polymers used in medical device applications. However, medical devices fabricated with plasticized PVC, such as endotracheal tubes, extracorporeal circuits (ECCs), or intravenous catheters, can lead to thrombosis and infection complications. Mortality associated with hospital associated infections (HAIs) exceed 100,000 deaths each year. One method to overcome these challenges is to develop bioactive polymers with nitric oxide (NO) release. Nitric oxide exhibits many physiological roles including antibacterial, antithromb

From plastic to pathophysiology: polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics disrupt fish blood, metabolism, and growth.

Rising global plastic use has led to widespread synthetic polymer pollution in aquatic ecosystems, threatening aquatic life. The combined toxicity of prevalent plastics like polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) under realistic conditions remains largely unexplored. This study provides the first evaluation of the impact of environmentally relevant concentrations (0.5 mg/L) of PE- and PVC-MPs, individually and in combination, on Channa punctatus over a 21-day exposure period, uniquely revealing the enhanced toxicity of combined MPs through an integrated assessment of hematological, bio
