Uncorking the muse: alcohol intoxication facilitates creative problem solving.

That alcohol provides a benefit to creative processes has long been assumed by popular culture, but to date has not been tested. The current experiment tested the effects of moderate alcohol intoxication on a common creative problem solving task, the Remote Associates Test (RAT). Individuals were brought to a blood alcohol content of approximately .075, and, after reaching peak intoxication, completed a battery of RAT items. Intoxicated individuals solved more RAT items, in less time, and were more likely to perceive their solutions as the result of a sudden insight. Results are interpreted fr

The rise of the rats: A growing paediatric issue.

Rat bite fever (RBF), a systemic infection of Streptobacillus moniliformis or Spirillum minus characterized by fever, arthralgias and petechial-purpuric rash on the extremities, carries a mortality rate of 7% to 10% if untreated. In Canada, one adult and two paediatric cases of RBF have been reported since 2000. In recent years, pet rats have become quite popular among children, placing them at an increased risk for RBF. Thus, paediatricians need to be more wary of the potential for RBF in their patients. In the present report, a culture-confirmed case of RBF and two additional cases of suspec

Send in the clowns: A special tribute to medical clowning and clown eponyms in dermatology.

Clowns have long delighted circus crowds and are celebrated not only in popular culture but also in the dermatology literature as medical eponyms. This contribution discusses four such eponyms: (1) clown nose-like lesion, (2) clown eczema (perioral dermatitis), (3) clown alopecia pattern in frontal fibrosing alopecia, and (4) clown's face of Brachman de Lange syndrome (Cornelia de Lange syndrome). This contribution also highlights the role of medical clowning in patient care by paying tribute to Cobo the Clown, also known as Barbara Joyce Cohen, who has served as a dedicated caring clown for m

Trends in plant tissue culture, production, and secondary metabolites enhancement of medicinal plants: a case study of thyme.

Thymus plants are greatly threatened by overharvesting and climate change. Plant cell and tissue culture techniques provide effective alternatives for the production and the enhancement of both biomass and bioactive compounds. Medicinal and aromatic plants are rich sources of various bioactive compounds known as secondary metabolites, which are used across a range of fields, including medicinal, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, perfumes, agrochemicals and agrofood industries. Thyme is considered one of the most popular herbs globally, valued for its significant medicinal, pharmaceutical, and nutrit

Characterization and optimization of a simple, repeatable system for the long term in vitro culture of aligned myotubes in 3D.

Increased recent research activity in exercise physiology has dramatically improved our understanding of skeletal muscle development and physiology in both health and disease. Advances in bioengineering have enabled the development of biomimetic 3D in vitro models of skeletal muscle which have the potential to further advance our understanding of the fundamental processes that underpin muscle physiology. As the principle structural protein of the extracellular matrix, collagen-based matrices are popular tools for the creation of such 3D models but the custom nature of many reported systems has

Development of Monascus fermentation technology for high hypolipidemic effect.

Monascus species has been used as the traditional food fungus in Eastern Asia for several centuries. Monascus-fermented products are gradually developed as the popular functional food for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, but we know that culture condition affects the hypolipidemic effect of Monascus-fermented product. In the past, the cholesterol-lowering agent--monacolin K--is regarded as the most important hypolipidemic agent. Two natural yellow pigments--monascin and ankaflavin--are also proven as novel hypolipidemic agents in recent years. However, the hypolipidemic effect of Mona

[The control of storage mites in the mycological laboratory].

Mycological cultures in the laboratory are threatened by storage mites who feed on fungi and cause contamination by transferring bacteria and fungi from culture to culture. To eliminate mites from fungal cultures without damage to the fungi themselves several chemical and physical procedures were tested. The following substances were added to Sabouraud glucose (2%) agar at concentrations of 0.1 and 1.0%: gamma benzene hexachloride (lindane), N-ethyl-o-crotonyltoluide, pyrethrins, dieldrin N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide, benzyl benzoate, and--as popular household remedies--Eau de Cologne, neutral soap

Fluid modernities: the birthing pool in late twentieth-century Britain.

Birthing pools are a common feature of maternity units across Europe and North America, and in home birth practice. Despite their prevalence and popularity, these blue or white, often bulky plastic objects have received minimal empirical or theoretical analysis. This article attends to the emergence, design and meaning of such birthing pools, with a focus on the UK in the 1980s and 1990s. Across spheres of media, political and everyday debate, the pools characterise the paradoxes of 'modern maternity': they are 'fluidly' timeless and new, natural and medical, homely and unusual, safe and risky

Onycomycosis due to artificial nails.

BACKGROUND: The use of artificial nails (ANs) as part of nail-care cosmetics is very popular. Several side effects and complications, such as contact dermatitis and bacterial and fungal infections, have been reported in patients using ANs. Objective The purpose of this study was to identify the fungal pathogens in nail abnormalities appearing in patients with ANs. METHODS: We evaluated 68 patients suffering from nail changes and paronychia, which appear after removal of ANs. Mycological samples were obtained from two sites: distal parts of the involved nail and the proximal nail fold. KOH exa

"The Mole on His Penis Lassos Her:" Cultural Understandings of Coercive Control and Emotional Abuse of Women in Cambodia.

Throughout world history, moles and birthmarks have occupied a special place as omens. Little is known of the cultural beliefs concerning the determinants of coercive control. In this ethnographic study of coercive control in Cambodia, the focus is on popular beliefs that moles are omens portending that men shall control women. Lachrymal moles (under the eye) signify women weeping as a result of misery. Penile moles portend men attracting, controlling, even abusing women. They have implications for reinterpreting an "insider" view of hegemonic masculinity and for culturally responsive interven

The demand to progress: critical nostalgia in LGBTQ cultural memory.

This article argues that, while representations of tragic lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) histories are disseminated widely, positive aspects of the past must be largely pushed out of the cultural imaginary to support a vision of the present in which sexual rights and freedoms have been achieved. It proposes that this view relies on a linear progress narrative wherein the experiences of LGBTQ people are held as consistently improving over time. In considering the construction of cultural memory through popular media and art, it claims a nostalgic turn to the past as a us

[SOLVING A MEDICAL MYSTERY THROUGH THE EYES OF A YOUNG PATIENT WITH MULTIPLE TATTOOS].

Tattoos have been an integral aspect of human cultural heritage for centuries, and gained vast popularity in recent years among different cultures, being part of the mainstream culture. To date, it is even very common to perform many tattoos in various sizes over the body. However, many tattooed people are not aware of tattoo-related side effects. Several reports have emerged in recent years regarding the association between tattoos and autoimmune diseases. Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology, characterized by non-caseating granulomas, and may involve many body o

Colonoscopy in Comedy and the Arts.

In this communication, the authors attempted to weave together medical history, public policy, popular culture, comedy, film, and the arts to examine how 'colonoscopy' has entered the public lexicon. The narrative flows from evidence-based screening policy to cultural commentary, while maintaining a thoughtful and balanced tone. The manuscript attempts to highlight legitimate patient anxieties while also acknowledging the medical community's efforts to improve patient experience through advances in preparation, sedation, and technique while never losing sight of reinforcing the value of colore

Exploring obscenity in Nigerian Afro-pop music: A sociocultural analysis of Yoruba youth and social norms.

Nigerian Afro-pop music is a popular genre that significantly influences Nigerian society and beyond. While Afro-pop promotes Nigerian culture globally, critics argue that its explicit lyrics and provocative music videos negatively impact young individuals, promoting materialism, sexual promiscuity, and drug use. This research focuses on the cultural implications of "vulgar" Afro-pop music among Yoruba youth in Nigeria. The study employs a quantitative analysis of 295 responses to explore the respondents' perspectives on offensive content in Nigerian Afro-pop music. The findings highlight musi

Who Should Be Gluten-Free? A Review for the General Practitioner.

Historically, a gluten-free diet was recommended only for those with celiac disease or IgE-mediated wheat allergy. With changes in food allergy labeling in the United States and the publication of several best-selling books, gluten-related disorders have come to the forefront of popular culture. As a result, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of gluten-free diet followers, many for nontraditional reasons. As "going gluten-free" has become mainstream, it is imperative that health care providers acquire the knowledge to identify true gluten-related disorders to effectively counsel

Drunkorexia: A new term and diagnostic criteria.

Individuals who restrict their caloric intake and/or exercise excessively to mitigate the calories from alcohol consumption may suffer from an eating disorder, substance abuse disorder, or both. While the term "drunkorexia" has been used in both academic articles and popular culture, issues persist with respect to diagnosing and treating this condition. Classifying the behavior as a subcategory of Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders (OSFED) would provide patients with an increased likelihood of receiving insurance coverage for this condition. A consistent definition of this behavior a

The force of presence: reflections on Star Wars, rehabilitation, and the art of living with pain.

Stories often provide a language through which complex experiences of suffering and healing become easier to understand. This reflection explores how Star Wars offers meaningful metaphors for contemporary rehabilitation, particularly regarding mindfulness, pain acceptance, and psychological flexibility. Rather than interpreting the saga as scientific evidence, the article considers the Jedi journey as a narrative framework for understanding presence, uncertainty, attachment, and the desire to control suffering. By connecting popular culture with current concepts in pain science and rehabilitat
