People in Portugal have never been so healthy. Nevertheless, there are great differences in health status between social groups and regions. In 1994, Portugal was the country with the second worst level of inequality in terms of income distribution and with the highest level of poverty in the European Union (EU). Poverty in Portugal affects mainly the elderly and women (especially in single parent families). Beyond these groups, there are the children, the ethnic minorities and the homeless. Substance abusers, the unemployed, and ex-prisoners are also strongly affected by situations of social

BACKGROUND: Attention throughout Europe continues to focus on bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), with increasing evidence linking it to the new variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. In particular, recent attention has been directed at Portugal, where the incidence of confirmed BSE cases continues to rise.
METHODS: We modelled the age-specific incidence of BSE in Portuguese-born cattle by birth cohort as a function of: the survival distribution; the cohort-specific incidence of BSE infection; the age-specific probability, conditional on survival, that an infected animal will exp

This paper presents a review of Leptospira infection in farm animals in Portugal which is based mainly on serological results obtained in the National Veterinary Research Laboratory between January 1987 and December 1993. Serum samples were tested by the microscopic agglutination test, at a minimum dilution of 1:100. Positive titres were obtained in 15.3% of the 9,543 bovine samples examined. Sejroe, Pomona, Hebdomadis, Tarassovi and Icterohaemorrhagiae were the principal serogroups which reacted in the tests. A total of 3,195 pigs were tested, of which 20.2% showed positive reactions. Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a condition that affects 12000 Portuguese individuals annually. In Portugal, disease management foresees three levels of services according to the Cardiology Referral Network. This study aims to characterize the path taken by AMI patients in Portugal after hospital treatment, at the different hospital levels. Subsequently, it aims to propose recommendations for improvements. A Steering Committee, composed of cardiology experts in AMI was responsible for the project methodology. A literature review was performed to systematize national and international AMI

It is unclear whether West Nile virus (WNV) circulates endemically in Portugal. Despite the country's adequate climate for transmission, Portugal has only reported four human WNV infections so far. We performed a review of WNV-related data (1966-2020), explored mosquito (2016-2019) and land type distributions (1992-2019), and used climate data (1981-2019) to estimate WNV transmission suitability in Portugal. Serological and molecular evidence of WNV circulation from animals and vectors was largely restricted to the south. Land type and climate-driven transmission suitability distributions, but

25-hydroxyvitamin D is the best biomarker of vitamin D biological activity, and its serum level has been used in studies assessing vitamin D sufficiency. However, the definitions of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency remain non-consensual. The cutoff point for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels used to define vitamin D sufficiency typically ranges between 50 and 75 nmol/L. Serum levels below 30 nmol/L, indicative of severe vitamin D deficiency, may have potentially adverse effects on skeletal and overall health. Hypovitaminosis D is highly prevalent worldwide, including across Europe. Severa

This retrospective study describes the national histopathology caseload of feline tumours submitted to a Portuguese diagnostic laboratory over a five-year period. A total of 1904 histopathology-confirmed neoplasms were analysed by biological behaviour, anatomical location, and demographic/geographical variables. Malignant tumours predominated (77.4%), whereas 22.6% were benign. Tumours most commonly involved the mammary gland (44.8%) and cutaneous/soft tissues (42.4%), together accounting for 87.2% of cases; all other sites were individually uncommon (≤5.6%). The most frequent malignant tumour

OBJECTIVE: To examine clinical practice patterns in locally managing patients under an active surveillance protocol among Portuguese urologists.
INTRODUCTION: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a heterogeneous disease with many prostate adenocarcinomas being indolent and a low probability of ever causing symptoms or death. Active surveillance (AS) is a form of conservative management aimed to reduce over-treatment for low-risk PCa patients. Over the years, experience with AS has grown considerably and is now standard in some countries, however a universal protocol still does not exist.
METHODS: Nation

Cervical cancer is the second cancer with the highest incidence and mortality in women aged 15-44 living in Europe. Screening is an effective strategy to reduce these rates, although in Portugal, as in other European countries, adherence to screening still presents significant disparities. Thus, this study aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with cervical cancer screening (CCS) nonadherence in Portugal. Cross-sectional data from 5929 women aged 25-64 included in the 2014 Portuguese National Health Survey (2014 NHS) were analyzed. The prevalence of CCS nonadherence was estimat

Trichinella spp. infection occurs when a host ingests muscle tissue containing infective larvae (L1 stage). Wild boar meat and its products represent the second largest source of human trichinellosis worldwide. For this reason, and since that in Portugal wild boar is the most hunted large game specie, the laboratory of Technology, Quality and Food Safety (TQFS) from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro created a free service to test wild boar meat for Trichinella spp. From December 2015 to February 2020, and 857 samples were analysed. From those, the majority (719/857, 83.9%) were tes

INTRODUCTION: Home mechanical ventilation (HMV) practice has changed with publication of new evidence and introduction of new technologies, and varies between countries. This study investigated current HMV use and practices in Spain and Portugal.
METHODS: 94 healthcare professionals identified as regularly performing HMV-related activities were sent an e-mail link to an online questionnaire. The questionnaire included 40 items relating to responder demographics, non-invasive ventilation (NIV) care structure, ventilated patient profile, work habits, and potential future practice improvements.

INTRODUCTION: Genitourinary tuberculosis is the fourth most common cause of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, although often underestimated by clinicians due to its rare and non-specific symptoms. One of the disease's complications is infertility. Although Portugal is one of the European countries with the highest prevalence of tuberculosis, its impact on Portuguese female fertility is unknown. With this study, we intend to evaluate the prevalence of genital tuberculosis, its presenting symptoms, and pregnancy outcomes in infertile women followed in a Portuguese tertiary hospital.

Infection with the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is prevalent in animals and humans worldwide. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of antibodies to T. gondii and associated risk factors among blood donors in Portugal. Serum samples were tested for the presence of anti-T. gondii immunoglobulin (Ig) G by a modified agglutination test (MAT). A written standardized questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic and behavioural data from the blood donors. Out of 520 participants (median age: 39.5 years; interquartile range: 29.0-47.0), who attended blood collection session

INTRODUCTION: The early neonatal period is the most critical for the newborn's life. The autopsy is important to understand the cause of death, and find other diagnoses not clinically identified. However, the rate of neonatal autopsy is declining worldwide. This study aims to characterize early neonatal death and the clinical importance of the autopsy, evaluating the concordance between clinical and pathological diagnosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective study of the clinical records of all neonates admitted to a level III Neonatal Intensive Care unit in Portugal who died during the first

BACKGROUND: Dirofilariosis is a potentially zoonotic parasitic disease, mainly transmitted by mosquito vectors in many parts of the world. Data concerning the canine Dirofilaria species currently circulating in Portugal is scarce. Thereby, a large-scale study was conducted to determine the Dirofilaria spp. present in Portugal, based on a molecular approach, and also to optimize a reliable and highly sensitive species-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay that could be used for the simultaneous detection and differentiation of Dirofilaria immitis, Dirofilaria repens, and other concurre

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a Gram-negative bacillus and the causative agent of melioidosis, a serious infection associated with high mortality rate in humans. It can be naturally found as an environmental saprophyte in soil or stagnant water, and rice paddies that predominate in regions of endemicity such as Northeast Thailand. B. pseudomallei is a Biosafety Level 3 organism due to risks of aerosolization and severe disease and is now included in formal emergency preparedness plans and guidelines issued by various authorities in the United States and Europe. Here, we report the first case of
