Ultrasound screening for congenital cardiac malformations in the fetus. Its importance for peri- and postnatal care.

Congenital cardiac malformations (CCM) are the commonest congenital anomalies. Using ultrasonography (US), the incidence of CCM in a selected group of fetuses and the impact of CCM on perinatal and postnatal care was evaluated. The indication for fetal echocardiography (F-ECHO) in 152 pregnancies was a positive family history in 61, fetal arrhythmias seen by routine obstetrical controls in 53, suspected CCM during obstetrical US in 9, growth retardation in 3 and contracted maternal factors in 6. Twenty pregnancies had no special indication. F-ECHO was performed between the 18th and the 39th ge

Investigating the individual and contextual factors associated with non-use of newborn postnatal care in Eswatini.

Postnatal care is among the most important maternal and child healthcare interventions for reducing maternal and child mortality. Despite efforts to increase the uptake of maternal and child health services, Eswatini is among the countries with the highest prevalence of non-use of newborn postnatal care. This study investigated the individual and contextual factors associated with non-use of newborn postnatal care in Eswatini using secondary data from the 2021-22 Eswatini Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey. A two-level logistic regression modelling approach was used. The prevalence of non-use o

Improvement in antenatal diagnosis of critical congenital heart disease implications for postnatal care and screening.

OBJECTIVE: This observational study was performed to examine the current timing and mode of diagnosis of critical congenital heart disease (CCHD), since early detection of cardiac lesions can significantly improve morbidity and mortality. METHOD: Ninety cases of CCHD in infants born in Middle Tennessee in 2009 were identified by weekly review of admissions to a single cardiac referral center. CCHD is defined as lesions requiring admission or re-admission for surgical or medical intervention within 1 month of life. RESULTS: Overall, the observed antenatal detection rate of 49% is significantl

Changes in long-term prognosis with increasing postnatal survival and the occurrence of postnatal morbidities in extremely preterm infants offered intensive care: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Decisions regarding provision of intensive care and post-discharge follow-up for infants born extremely preterm (<28 weeks' gestation) are based on the risks of mortality and neurodevelopmental disability. We aimed to elucidate the changes in probability of three outcomes (death, survival with major disability, and survival without major disability) with postnatal age in extremely preterm infants offered intensive care, and the effect of postnatal events on the probability of survival without major disability. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, we used data from thr

Dominant predictors of postnatal care utilization among ever-married mothers of reproductive age in Bangladesh.

The majority of maternal mortality occurs during the postpartum period worldwide. Therefore, postnatal care (PNC) is crucial for both mother's and newborn's survival. Unfortunately, PNC is underutilized in Bangladesh and well below any admissible level. The purpose of this study is not only to identify the potential factors associated with PNC but also to explore the more intriguing aspect of finding the most important determinants of PNC receipt among mothers in Bangladesh. Binary logistic regression analysis was employed to determine the factors associated with PNC receipt using data from th

Determinants of postnatal care service utilization among married women in rural areas in western Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide studies have shown that three-fourths of the total deaths during the neonatal period occur in the first week of the postnatal period. However, most of these deaths can be prevented with care during pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal care. According to the 2016 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey report, 17% of women in Ethiopia had received postnatal care after childbirth. This study aimed to identify determinants of postnatal care service utilization among married women in rural areas in Western Ethiopia. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conduct

Association between Elevated Postnatal Blood Pressure and Postpartum Acute Care Utilization in a Southeastern U.S. Health Care System, 2021 to 2023.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are a leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths in the United States and approximately 70% occur after birth. We estimated the crude and adjusted association between elevated postnatal blood pressure (BP) and acute care utilization (visits to the Emergency Department, obstetric triage, urgent care facility, or hospital readmission) in the first 12 weeks after discharge from the birth hospitalization. We constructed a retrospective cohort of birthing people aged ≥18 years who gave birth to ≥1 liveborn infant at >20 weeks of gestation from July 1, 2021, to Dece
