Postoperative esophageal complications--prevention and treatment.

Postoperative esophagitis and stricture formation may be more serious than the disease for which operation was done. The best treatment is prevention by avoiding use of a nasogastric tube if possible. If it has to be used, the tube should have a small lumen and be removed as soon as possible. When surgical operation is necessary, the cardioesophageal junction should not be sacrificed unless it is absolutely necessary to do so.Conservative treatment if begun early can minimize or prevent the development of esophagitis and subsequent stricture formation.

Predictors of Postoperative Complications Following Cranioplasty.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cranioplasty is performed to restore the bone flap after previous brain surgery or trauma. Despite its elective nature, patients may be at risk for complications. Our study analyzes predictors of adverse events after cranioplasty and compares outcomes among patients undergoing very-early and standard cranioplasty. METHODS: Patients who underwent cranioplasty were retrospectively identified from the TriNetX Research Network. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess the risk of mortality, surgical site infection (SSI), and need for revision cranioplasty. Pr

Steroids and Postoperative Complications in IBD.

Corticosteroids are frequently used in the management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Although they can be very useful, their potential adverse effects have to be kept in mind. One of the situations in which these drugs should be avoided, if possible, is the perioperative setting. If a patient reaches surgery while on steroids, surgical complications will be more likely to occur, both infectious and non-infectious. Attention should be paid to this fact, within a multidisciplinary approach, that also takes into account other factors, such as nutrition.

Unilateral discectomy: outcomes, postoperative pain, complications.

In low back pain management surgery is currently commonly used with a new technique called minimally invasive discectomy, while open discectomy is still preferable in many cases. In this regard, the efficacy of tubular discectomy (TD) were compared with conventional standard lumbar disc procedure (conventional microdiscectomy). This study was performed as a clinical trial conducted on patients who were under TD and conventional microdiscectomy using unilateral retractor at Bou Ali, Mehrad, Laleh Hospitals during the years 2001 to 2017. The pain score was determined based on the use of Visual A

Early Postoperative Complications after Oncoplastic Reduction.

BACKGROUND: Breast-conserving surgery with adjuvant radiation therapy (BCT) has been established as safe oncologically. Oncoplastic breast surgery uses both oncologic and plastic surgery techniques for breast conservation to improve cosmetic outcomes. We evaluated the risk factors associated with complications after oncoplastic breast reduction. METHODS: A single-institution, institutional review board-approved, retrospective review of electronic medical records of female patients with breast cancer who underwent oncoplastic breast reduction from 2008 to 2014. A review of electronic medical r

Management of postoperative complications: general approach.

The goal of postoperative management is to promote early mobility and avoid postoperative complications, recognizing the potentially devastating impact of complications on elderly patients with hip fracture. The recommended approach involves early mobilization; freedom from tethers (indwelling urinary catheters and other devices); effective pain control; treating malnutrition; preventing pressure ulcers; reducing risk for pulmonary, urinary, and wound infections; and managing cognition. This carefully structured and patient-centered management provides older, vulnerable patients their best cha

[Scoring of postoperative complications in coloproctology].

Surgical procedures for anorectal diseases are numerous, and the most important question is how to guarantee these patients an adequate follow-up in order to establish the real efficacy of the treatment and the effective incidence of side effects related to the procedures. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of a scoring system with analysis of the quality of life and measurement of the severity of short- and long-term complications which might be useful in the followup of patients surgically treated for anorectal diseases. The authors followed 200 patients and performed 90 hemorr

Postoperative complications following gingival augmentation procedures.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain, swelling, and bleeding are the most common complications following soft tissue grafting procedures; however, detailed documentation is sparse in the literature. The aims of this prospective study were as follows: 1) to compare the frequency of complication occurrence after free soft tissue grafting (FSTG) or subepithelial connective tissue grafting (SCTG) procedures; 2) to evaluate the use of an acellular dermal matrix (ADM) as the donor tissue alternative to an FSTG or SCTG; and 3) to identify possible predictors for these complications. METHODS: Seventy-five

Abdominal incisions: techniques and postoperative complications.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The choice of incision for laparotomy depends on the area that needs to be exposed, the elective or emergency nature of the operation and personal preference. Type of incision may however have its influence on the occurrence of postoperative wound complications. Techniques and features of various incisions are discussed, as well as the incidence of their postoperative complications. METHOD: A medline search was conducted identifying prospective randomised trials, as well as retrospective studies with sufficient follow-up, comparing midline, paramedian, transverse and obli

Postoperative complications after Molteno implant surgery.

We performed Molteno implant surgery in one eye each of 41 patients with uncontrolled glaucoma. Intraocular pressure was controlled (intraocular pressure less than or equal to 18 mm Hg) in 32 eyes (78%). The mean preoperative intraocular pressure was 40 +/- 13.2 mm Hg, whereas the mean postoperative intraocular pressure was 16 +/- 6.6 mm Hg. Patients were followed up for an average of 16 months after the operation. Visual acuity was unchanged in 23 eyes (56%), improved in nine eyes (22%), and poorer in nine eyes (22%). The major complications included shallow anterior chamber and hypotony in s

Postoperative sequelae and complications of rhinoplasty.

This article has overviewed complications of rhinoplasty. Generally, these complications fall into two categories: aesthetic (that is, cosmetic sequelae that may require a revision rhinoplasty) and nonaesthetic. Of the nonaesthetic complications, infection has the widest span of severity. A localized Staphylococcus aureus abscess or Pseudomonas infection of the nose may occur postoperatively. Owing to the proximity of the nose to the cranium, a cavernous sinus thrombosis or basilar meningitis may result. Postoperative toxic-shock syndrome is a rare occurrence that surgeons should be aware of;

[Postoperative obstructive abdominal complications in children].

In the pediatric surgical Department of the "Le Fe" Hospital, from January 1971 to December 1982 2,350 laparotomies were performed in neonates, infants and children. In 67 patients abdominal surgery was complicated by bowel obstruction for which a second laparotomy had to be performed. In 86.56%, of patients with obstruction (58 cases) this became obvious during the first three months after the previous operation. In 54 out of the 67 patients reviewed (80.59%), adhesions were the cause for obstruction and only twelve was this caused by an abscess.
