A rare clinical entity: Pott's puffy tumor. A case report.

Interstitial pregnancy (IP) is a rare kind of tubal pregnancy, which occurs in 2-4% of all ectopic pregnancies. It occurs as a result of implantation of the gestational sac in the proximal intramural part of the fallopian tube. Risk factors include the following: pregnancy conceived after assisted reproductive technologies, ipsilateral salpingectomy, previous ectopic pregnancy, congenital tubal and uterine malformations, pelvic inflammatory disease, and the presence of an intrauterine device. Given the rare and complex nature of interstitial pregnancies, diagnosis and management are difficult.

Pott's puffy tumor in pediatric Patients: Our surgical experience.

BACKGROUND: Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is a rare complication of frontal sinusitis defined as subperiosteal abscess of the anterior table of the frontal sinus with associated osteomyelitis. Its complications can be harmful to the patient, therefore immediate treatment is necessary. Surgical drainage and systemic antibiotics are considered as integral parts of the overall treatment. However, surgical approaches can differ between different centers and surgeons. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the electronic records of 13 pediatric patients with PPT between 2018 and 2023.Clinical, laborator

Beyond the Sinus: Unmasking Pott's Puffy Tumor Through Imaging.

Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is a rare yet severe complication of frontal sinusitis, characterized by localized forehead swelling resulting from osteomyelitis and subperiosteal abscess formation. This case report discusses a 15-year-old male patient who initially presented with upper respiratory tract symptoms. These progressed to seizures, leading to the identification of extensive sinusitis and significant intra-cranial complications. The case emphasizes the benefits of integrating multiple imaging modalities to improve diagnoses and patient care. Imaging findings facilitated early diagnosis and

Anterior table remodeling after treatment for Pott's puffy tumor.

We report a case of near-complete remodeling of the anterior table of the frontal sinus after treatment for an erosive Pott's Puffy Tumor. A 61-year-old male presented with progressive swelling of his left forehead. Examination showed a doughy left forehead mass, and a sinus CT showed a lateral left frontal sinus mucocele with complete anterior table erosion. Frontal trephination with marsupialization of the mucocele was performed, and at 8 month follow-up, the patient had no visible defect and only minimally palpable bony defect. The anterior table had remodeled with no additional interventio

Pott puffy tumor following upper facial feminization surgery: a case report and literature review.

Pott puffy tumor (PPT) is characterized by frontal bone osteomyelitis associated with a subperiosteal abscess, presenting as a localized, firm swelling of the forehead. This report describes the first documented case of PPT in a patient following facial feminization surgery. We present a case involving a 30-year-old transgender female who developed PPT 1 year after undergoing upper third facial feminization surgery, specifically frontal bone reduction osteoplasty and anterior table frontal sinus setback osteoplasty. The patient experienced rapid resolution following operative exploration with

Pott Puffy Tumor Secondary to Cranial Vault Reconstruction in a Patient With Metopic Craniosynostosis.

Pott puffy tumor (PPT) is defined as a subperiosteal abscess of the anterior wall of the frontal sinus associated with underlying frontal osteomyelitis. PPT affects all age groups but occurs predominantly in adolescents. The potential etiologies include rhinosinusitis, a history of direct trauma to the forehead, odontogenic disease, intranasal drug abuse, diabetes, or other immunocompromised states. We introduce a case of a 6-year-old boy with a medical history of anterior cranial vault remodeling presenting with localized forehead swelling. Computed tomography imaging demonstrated mucosal thi

Increasing Rate of Pott's Puffy Tumor Hospitalizations Among US Children.

BACKGROUND: Pott's puffy tumor is a rare complication of sinusitis characterized by osteomyelitis of the frontal bone with subperiosteal abscess, often with intracranial sequelae. Although complications of sinusitis increased after the pandemic, it is unclear whether rates of Pott's puffy tumor increased. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the rate of Pott's puffy tumor hospitalizations in US children and assess trends in clinical characteristics during 2017-2025. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional epidemiological study using Epic Cosmos. We included hospitalizations of pediatric patients (aged

Pott's Puffy Tumor: A Case Report of a Complication of Rhinosinusitis in the Pediatric Age.

Pott's puffy tumor is a rare and often fatal complication of frontal sinusitis characterized by osteomyelitis and subperiosteal collection of the frontal bone. It is typically managed by surgical drainage combined with antibiotic therapy. We describe a previously well eight-year-old boy with forehead swelling following rhinosinusitis. A brain CT scan with contrast was diagnostic for Pott's puffy tumor with findings of acute frontal sinusitis with intracranial extension, subperiosteal collection, subgaleal inflammatory changes, and osteomyelitis. The patient was managed medically with intraveno

Clinical Management and Neurosurgical Approach of Pott's Puffy Tumor: A Case Report.

Pott's puffy tumors are assumed to be infrequent concomitant intra- and extracranial abscesses, mainly secondary to complicated frontal sinusitis during infancy. Due to the close proximity to the superior sagittal sinus, there is a risk of developing venous infections, thrombosis, and morbidity. In this case report, we present a case of an 11-year-old girl who presented with headache and face edema. After recognizing the Pott's puffy tumor pattern on the CT scan and brain MRI, the neurosurgical approach involved pus evacuation and frontal sinus blockage, and the patient received antibiotic the

Pott's Puffy Tumor in Young Age: A Systematic Review and Our Experience.

Background: Pott's Puffy Tumor (PPT) in young-age patients is a rare clinical entity characterized by osteomyelitis of the frontal bone with a subperiosteal abscess collection. Previous reviews primarily consist of small, retrospective case series and anecdotal reports. This study aims to present the largest, most up-to-date systematic review of essential clinical findings, diagnostic modalities, microbiologic considerations, and treatment approaches for managing PPT in pediatric and adolescent populations. Methods: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were systematically screened unti

Pott's Puffy Tumor, a Forgotten Complication of Sinusitis: Report of Two Cases.

Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is a life-threatening complication of infectious sinusitis/osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. It occurs due to infection or trauma and is often seen in late childhood and adolescence. If left untreated for a protracted period, intracranial complications such as epidural abscess, subdural empyema, meningitis, and a cerebral abscess may occur. The diagnosis is often confirmed with CT. Prompt medical and surgical treatment is mandatory as there is the potential for significant morbidity if not quickly diagnosed and treated. This paper presents two cases of PPT manifested

[Pott's Puffy Tumor: a need for interdisciplinary diagnosis and treatment. German Version].

Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is an infection of the frontal sinus with subperiosteal and intracranial abscess formation and one of the rare entities in pediatrics. We present a series of four cases of PPT that occurred in two children (6 and 9 years) and in two young adults (17 and 19 years). All patients were treated by an interdisciplinary team of pediatric, neurosurgical, ENT, radiological, and neuroradiological specialists. Antibiotic treatment was combined with single endoscopic surgery in one case and combined endoscopic sinus surgery with an open transcranial approach to drain intracranial

A Case of Pott's Puffy Tumor Associated With Barosinusitis From Scuba Diving.

Barosinusitis, or sinus barotrauma, is a well-described condition associated with changes in barometric pressure during flight and diving that can result in sinonasal mucosal injury. In this case report, we present an adolescent who experienced barosinusitis during scuba diving and subsequently developed Pott's puffy tumor (PPT), characterized by frontal sinusitis, frontal bone osteomyelitis, and overlying subperiosteal abscess. This unique case of PPT following scuba diving provides the opportunity to review the pathophysiology of both barotrauma-induced sinus disease and PPT, a rare and unre

Treatment of Pott's Puffy tumor with balloon sinuplasty: report of three cases.

Pott's Puffy tumor (PPT) is a rare entity characterized by subperiosteal abscess associated with osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. It is usually managed by surgical curettage of the osteomyelitic bone and long-term antibiotic therapy. Balloon catheter dilatation is a new technique which was recently introduced for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis. In this article, we present three PPT cases (two of them were secondary to endoscopic sinus surgery) who were successfully treated with balloon catheter dilatation and long-term antibiotherapy.
