Emergence of the novel infectious bursal disease virus variant in vaccinated poultry flocks in Egypt.

Since the detection of antigenically atypical very virulent Infectious bursal disease viruses (vvIBDV) in Egypt in 1999, the country has been experiencing recurrent outbreaks with high mortality rates and typical gross lesions associated with typical vvIBDV. However, a significant change occurred in 2023, marked by a notable increase in reported subclinical IBDV cases. To evaluate the field situation, samples from 21 farms in 2023 and 18 farms from 2021 and 2022, all of which had experienced IBD outbreaks based on clinical diagnosis, were collected, and subjected to VP2-HVR sequencing. Phyloge

Newcastle disease virus-vectored West Nile fever vaccine is immunogenic in mammals and poultry.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen which is harmful to human and animal health. Effective vaccination in susceptible hosts should protect against WNV infection and significantly reduce viral transmission between animals and from animals to humans. A versatile vaccine suitable for different species that can be delivered via flexible routes remains an essential unmet medical need. In this study, we developed a recombinant avirulent Newcastle disease virus (NDV) LaSota strain expressing WNV premembrane/envelope (PrM/E) proteins (designated rLa-WNV-PrM/E) and evalua

Modeling and control of highly pathogenic avian influenza in poultry using network disease dynamics.

In light of the ongoing 2022-2025 HPAI outbreak in the U.S., which affects millions of commercial and backyard flocks, disrupts egg and meat production, and causes significant economic losses, it is important to develop biological models and optimization algorithms that conform to the U.S.-specific patterns of HPAI transmission and reflect control and prevention measures adopted in the USA. In this study, we introduce a partially stochastic network compartmental model to ascertain the progression and potential containment of HPAI virus in commercial flocks and wildlife. Parameters of the model

Differentiating commensal and disease-associated Enterococcus cecorum isolates in poultry using protein sequences.

Enterococcus cecorum (EC) is an avian enteric commensal, but around the year 2000, it emerged as a frequent causative agent of bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO) in older broilers. More recently, around 2020, EC has also been isolated from cases of sepsis (SS) in young birds. Differentiating pathogenic from commensal isolates has therefore become critical for surveillance and control efforts. In this study, we applied amino acid k-mer profiling (k = 5) along with supervised learning algorithms, including Random Forest and Multilayer Perceptron approaches, to identify minimal se

A Poultry Subclinical Necrotic Enteritis Disease Model Based on Natural Clostridium perfringens Uptake.

Necrotic enteritis (NE) in poultry is an opportunistic infection caused by Clostridium perfringens. Well-known as a multifactorial disease, NE development is under the influence of a wide range of environmental risk factors that promote the proliferation of pathogenic C. perfringens at the expense of nonpathogenic strains. Current in vivo NE challenge models typically incorporate pre-exposure to disease risk factors, in combination with exogenous C. perfringens inoculation. Our goal was to enhance current models using a natural uptake of C. perfringens from the barn environment to produce a su

Heat stress, respiratory dysbiosis, and poultry pathobiome: A comprehensive review of chronic respiratory disease in chickens.

The poultry respiratory microbiome is increasingly recognized as a critical determinant of poultry health, mucosal immunity, and host resistance to opportunistic pathogens. Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD) exerts a severe economic toll on the global broiler industry. While conventionally attributed to specific etiological agents such as Mycoplasma gallisepticum, disease progression is fundamentally tied to broad ecological dysbiosis within the respiratory tract. This comprehensive review synthesizes current knowledge on the functional roles and compositional dynamics of the poultry respirator

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Poultry: Risk Factors, Mechanism of Development, and Emerging Strategies.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has emerged as a significant metabolic disorder in modern poultry production, particularly affecting high-yielding laying hens. This condition compromises bird welfare, productivity, and economic sustainability within commercial farming systems. This narrative review provides a comprehensive overview of the underlying mechanisms through which hepatic lipid accumulation, metabolic dysfunctions, hormonal imbalances, genetic susceptibilities, and environmental stress contribute to the development of NAFLD. The multifactorial nature of NAFLD is explored th

Isolation of Campylobacter hepaticus from free-range poultry with spotty liver disease in New Zealand.

Case history: In October 2019, a free-range egg laying flock suffering an outbreak of spotty liver disease was investigated. Eight 32-week-old hens were examined post-mortem. Clinical and pathological findings: Five of the eight hens had sparse, focal, gross hepatic lesions typical of spotty liver disease. Histopathology of the liver showed random, focal hepatic necrosis, lymphoplasmacytic cholangitis/pericholangitis and, in one hen, severe lymphoplasmacytic cholecystitis. Campylobacter-like organisms were grown from all eight bile samples which were confirmed by PCR as Campylobacter hepaticus

Current and future vaccines and vaccination strategies against infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) respiratory disease of poultry.

Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT) is an economically important respiratory disease of poultry that affects the industry worldwide. Vaccination is the principal tool in the control of the disease. Two types of vaccines, live attenuated and recombinant viral vector, are commercially available. The first generation of GaHV-1 vaccines available since the early 1960's are live viruses, attenuated by continuous passages in cell culture or embryos. These vaccines significantly reduce mortalities and, in particular, the chicken embryo origin (CEO) vaccines have shown to limit outbreaks of the disease

Multilocus sequence typing subtypes of poultry Clostridium perfringens isolates demonstrate disease niche partitioning.

Clostridium perfringens is a ubiquitous and versatile pathogenic bacterium and is implicated in the etiology of the poultry diseases necrotic enteritis (NE) and poultry gangrene (PG). In this study, multilocus sequence typing was used to investigate genotypic relationships among 139 C. perfringens isolates from 74 flocks. These isolates had multiple disease, host, and environmental origins. The results indicated a polymorphic yet highly clonal population, with 79.6% of all isolates partitioning into one of six clonal complexes or two dominant sequence types, ST-9 and ST-31. The most prolific c

Molecular and phenotypical characterization of Clostridium perfringens isolates from poultry flocks with different disease status.

Due to the diminished use of growth-promoting antibiotics in the European Union, Clostridium perfringens induced necrotic enteritis and subclinical disease have become important threats to poultry health. A study was set up to genotypically and phenotypically characterise C. perfringens isolates from poultry flocks with different health status. Animals from healthy flocks were sampled by cloacal swabs, while intestinal and liver samples of animals suffering from necrotic enteritis were analysed. A total of 27 isolates was obtained from 23 broiler flocks without clinical problems and 36 isolate

Population structure and antibiotic resistance of Salmonella isolates from diseased poultry in Jiangxi Province, China.

Salmonella poses a significant threat to human and animal health. However, the relationship among population diversity, antibiotic resistance, and infection risk remains largely unexplored. In this study, 69 Salmonella strains were isolated from diseased poultry in Jiangxi Province from 2021 to 2024. Using whole-genome sequencing, serotype prediction, MLST, virulence and resistance gene analysis, antibiotic susceptibility testing, and mobile genetic element annotation, we characterized the diversity, resistance profiles, and transmission mechanisms of these strains. The results showed high div

Degenerative joint disease in poultry--differences in composition and morphology of articular cartilage are associated with strain susceptibility.

The morphology and basic biochemical composition of articular cartilage from two strains of fowl were examined. Broiler breeder fowl are considered susceptible to degenerative joint disease (DJD); histological examination of one-year-old broiler breeders showed in some samples, articular cartilage thinning, fibrillation and chondrocyte cluster formation, features considered typical of DJD. Examination of similar samples from laying strain fowl showed only minor age-related changes such as some slight cartilage thinning and very mild fibrillation. The articular cartilage from the broiler breede

Effectiveness of Thermostable Vaccine for Newcastle Disease Produced by the Razi Institute on Backyard Poultry in Iran during 2015.

Newcastle disease causes many economic losses to the poultry industry in most countries. This disease is endemic in Iran. Backyard poultry is considered the reservoir of Newcastle virus; however, there is either no vaccination program against Newcastle, or it is performed in a restricted manner. Commercial live vaccines are inactive and sensitive to temperature; moreover, vaccine delivery to villages and remote areas requires special equipment and high cost to maintain the cold chain. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a thermostable Newcastle vaccine produced by the Razi Institute (ND.
