Interviews with Mexican midwives.

Mexican society contains a variety of indigenous cultures as well as European influences. Most babies in rural areas are delivered by midwives. Traditional midwives, government-trained and empirical midwives, nurse-midwives, and foreign-trained midwives all practice in Mexico. Nurse-midwives in one project are demonstrating their ability to meet the needs of urban childbearing women. A midwifery organization is developing under the leadership of midwives influenced by the contemporary midwifery movement in the United States. In this article, some traditional Mexican midwifery practices are dis

Nurses' intention to report child abuse in Saudi Arabia: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is a prevalent problem with short and long-term consequences. While most countries have enacted child abuse reporting laws, the Saudi healthcare system has not paid sufficient attention to nurses' role in the reporting of child abuse. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to 1) identify the factors associated with nurses' intention to report child abuse by testing a hypothetical model; 2) examine the patterns underlying their intention to report child abuse; and 3) investigate the differences in reporting based on clinical practice areas. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A convenience

The chlamydia knowledge, awareness and testing practices of Australian general practitioners and practice nurses: survey findings from the Australian chlamydia control effectiveness pilot (ACCEPt).

BACKGROUND: ACCEPt, a large cluster randomized control trial, aims to determine if annual testing for 16 to 29 year olds in general practice can reduce chlamydia prevalence. ACCEPt is the first trial investigating the potential role of practice nurses (PN) in chlamydia testing. To inform the design of the ACCEPt intervention, we aimed to determine the chlamydia knowledge, attitudes, and testing practices of participating general practitioners (GPs) and PNs. METHODS: GPs and PNs from 143 clinics recruited from 52 areas in 4 Australian states were asked to complete a survey at time of recruitme

Nurses as substitutes for doctors in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Current and expected problems such as ageing, increased prevalence of chronic conditions and multi-morbidity, increased emphasis on healthy lifestyle and prevention, and substitution for care from hospitals by care provided in the community encourage countries worldwide to develop new models of primary care delivery. Owing to the fact that many tasks do not necessarily require the knowledge and skills of a doctor, interest in using nurses to expand the capacity of the primary care workforce is increasing. Substitution of nurses for doctors is one strategy used to improve access, ef

Intensive care patient diaries in Scandinavia: a comparative study of emergence and evolution.

Critical illness and intensive care therapy are often followed by psychological problems such as nightmares, hallucinations, delusions, anxiety, depression, and symptoms of posttraumatic stress. Intensive care patient diaries have been kept by nurses and the patients' family since the early 1990s in the Scandinavian countries to help critically ill patients come to terms with their illness after hospital discharge. The aim of the study was to describe and compare the emergence and evolution of intensive care patient diaries in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. The study had a comparative internatio

Prioritization Patterns of Nurses in the Management of a Patient With Delirium: Results of a Q-Methodology Study.

Nurses are required to decide on priorities; however, how they prioritize the interventions toward patients with delirium is still unclear. Therefore, expanding the knowledge on (a) how nurses prioritize interventions to manage episodes of delirium and (b) the underlying prioritization patterns were the aims of this study. The Q-methodology was applied in 2021. A systematic review to identify the recommended interventions for patients with delirium was performed, and a nominal group technique was used to select those interventions that are applicable in daily practice (35 out of 96 identified)

Airway Management for Deep Sedation: Current Practice, Limitations, and Needs as Identified by Clinical Observation and Survey Results.

Using deep sedation, adjunct airway devices such as oral or nasal airways are frequently required to maintain airway patency. Traditional oral airways (TOAs, made of rigid plastic) or nasal airways (made of pliable materials) can be associated with adverse effects, contributing to a trend of anesthesia providers placing nasal airways orally. A clinical observational study and an electronic provider survey were conducted to examine this emerging practice. The observation study objective was to investigate reported postoperative sore throat occurrence associated with use of either a nontradition

Effectiveness of nurse-led clinics in the early discharge period after percutaneous coronary intervention: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Readmission after percutaneous coronary intervention is common in the early postdischarge period, often linked to limited opportunity for education and preparation for self-care. Attending a nurse-led clinic within 30 d after discharge has the potential to enhance health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to synthesise the available literature on the effectiveness of nurse-led clinics, during early discharge (up to 30 d), for patients who have undergone percutaneous coronary intervention. REVIEW METHOD USED: A systematic review of randomised and quasi-randomised contro

Nursing treatment of patients with chronic leg ulcers in the community.

A descriptive survey of current reported practice by 146 community nurses for their nursing treatment of leg ulcers was undertaken. Sixty-four per cent of nurses reported they would apply compression bandages to only venous ulcers; in only 23% of cases could the products described achieve an adequate level of compression. A variety of modern wound dressings were used by the nurses; 89% of nurses reported using a combination of different products layered over the ulcer. There is no evidence that this has any beneficial effect and could therefore be a potential waste of money, as well as contrib
