Lateralized Gene Splicing in the Brain is Associated With Lateralized Feeding Behavior in an Asymmetrical Scale-eating Cichlid Fish.

Lateralized behavior ("handedness") is a trait observed across all vertebrates, including humans. As an adaptive trait involved in both intraspecific and interspecific interactions, it holds broad evolutionary significance. However, the molecular basis of its brain regulation-particularly post-transcriptional regulation-remains poorly understood. Perissodus microlepis, a textbook example in evolutionary biology and an endemic scale-eating cichlid fish from Lake Tanganyika, displays pronounced lateralized feeding behavior that is complemented by its asymmetric head, by which it bites the scales

Skyglow facilitates prey detection in a crepuscular insectivore: Distant light sources create bright skies.

Light profoundly shapes ecosystems, influencing the behaviour and niche specialisation of many species. This is especially true for visual predators, particularly crepuscular and nocturnal animals, whose foraging depends on adequate illumination. Despite this, research on how animals perceive light sources and position themselves relative to these sources is scarce. Using a modified dead-reckoning protocol based on GPS, accelerometer, and magnetic compass data, we investigated the body orientation of foraging European Nightjars (Caprimulgus europaeus, hereafter nightjar) to determine their lin

Understanding the habitat selection and natural history of the spider Deinopis cf. cylindracea (Deinopidae).

Habitat choice is fundamental for an animal foraging, defense, and reproduction. Ogre-faced spiders are known for their unusual morphology, natural history, and rarity. They are sit-and-wait predators that build net-like webs that are manipulated by spiders and thrown at their prey. Hunting behavior includes selecting microhabitats for web construction that reduces the likelihood of damage or entanglement in the substrate during prey capture. Therefore, we expect that Deinopis cf. cylindracea selects smooth surfaces to forage on. We observed D. cf. cylindracea associated with smooth trunks of

Crocodile optimization algorithm for solving real-world optimization problems.

Nature-inspired bionic algorithms have become one of the most fascinating techniques in computational intelligence research, and have shown great potential in real-world challenging problems for their simplicity and flexibility. This paper proposes a novel nature-inspired algorithm, called the crocodile optimization algorithm (COA), which mimics the hunting strategies of crocodiles. In COA, the hunting behavior of crocodiles includes premeditation and waiting hunting. The premeditation behavior is an important hunting way for crocodiles to hide themselves from their prey and to explore more po

The interaction of Serratia bacteria and harmonine in harlequin ladybird confers an interspecies competitive edge.

The harlequin ladybird, Harmonia axyridis, is a predatory beetle used globally to control pests such as aphids and scale insects. Originating from East Asia, this species has become highly invasive since its introduction in the late 19th century to Europe and North America, posing a threat to local biodiversity. Intraguild predation is hypothesized to drive the success of this invasive species, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. In this study, a feeding assay revealed that while harlequin ladybirds survive feeding on seven-spotted ladybird eggs, the reverse is not true. However, sev

Inter-colony variation in predation, mercury burden and adult survival in a declining seabird.

Migratory species with disjunct and localized breeding distributions, including many colonial marine birds, pose challenges for management and conservation as their dynamics are shaped by both broad oceanographic changes and specific factors affecting individual breeding colonies. We compare six colonies of the declining Leach's storm-petrel, Hydrobates leucorhous, across their core range in Atlantic Canada using standard capture-mark-recapture methods to estimate annual survival of individually marked populations of breeding adults. Over the period analysed (5-20 years per colony; 2003-2022),

The relative importance of social information use for population abundance in group-living and non-grouping prey.

Predator-prey relationships are fundamental components of ecosystem functioning, within which the spatial consequences of prey social organization can alter predation rates. Group-living (GL) species are known to exploit inadvertent social information (ISI) that facilitates population persistence under predation risk. Still, the extent to which non-grouping (NG) prey can benefit from similar processes is unknown. Here we built an individual-based model to explore and compare the population-level consequences of ISI use in GL and NG prey. We differentiated between GL and NG prey only by the pre

Deterrence of birds with an artificial predator, the RobotFalcon.

Collisions between birds and airplanes can damage aircrafts, resulting in delays and cancellation of flights, costing the international civil aviation industry more than 1.4 billion US dollars annually. Driving away birds is therefore crucial, but the effectiveness of current deterrence methods is limited. Live avian predators can be an effective deterrent, because potential prey will not habituate to them, but live predators cannot be controlled entirely. Thus, there is an urgent need for new deterrence methods. We developed the RobotFalcon, a device modelled after the peregrine falcon, and t

Replacement of fangs in a free-ranging desert viperid, Cerastes vipera.

Venomous viperid snakes possess relatively large and fragile hollow fangs that are an integral part of the envenomation apparatus for predation. We hypothesized that fangs serve like disposable needles and predicted a high loss rate and, hence, high replacement rate in free-ranging snakes. Snakes also possess smaller rear teeth that aid in gripping and swallowing the prey. We reasoned that these teeth are less delicate than fangs and predicted that their loss would be at a slower rate than fangs. To test our predictions, we analyzed fecal samples of free-ranging Saharan sand vipers, Cerastes v

Phenotypic plasticity drives the development of laterality in the scale-eating cichlid fish Perissodus microlepis.

Phenotypic plasticity, in which traits change in response to environmental conditions, is closely related to predator-prey interactions and speciation. The scale-eating cichlid fish Perissodus microlepis exhibits marked left-right differences in predatory behavior and mouth morphology. While phenotypic plasticity is hypothesized to contribute to the formation of laterality, direct evidence remains scarce. We examined how plasticity shapes laterality by analyzing the predatory behavior and mandibular changes under different foraging conditions: picking granulated feed (non-scale-eating) and tea

The presence of mahi-mahi at multi-predator feeding aggregations modifies striped marlin attack behaviour.

Terrestrial multi-species predator feeding aggregations (MPFAs) are characterized by contest competition, but scramble competition is likely more common at MPFAs in pelagic waters. However, empirical investigations are rare. Aerial video was used to estimate abundances of striped marlin and mahi-mahi alongside their attack and capture rates and spatio-temporal positioning as they competed at prey schools. Mahi-mahi had higher capture efficiencies than marlin, and the presence of marlin did not affect mahi-mahi predatory behaviour. Conversely, the presence of mahi-mahi in smaller abundances may

[Behavioral mechanisms of spatial competition between red wood ants (Formica aquilonia) and ground beetles (Carabidae)].

Behavioral aspects of spatial competition between red wood ants (Formica aquilonia) and six mass species of Carabidae were studied in field and laboratory experiments. We showed that red wood ants essentially influence spatial distribution of ground beetles on their common territories. Transplantation experiments suggest that in newly established ants' settlements stronger forms of interrelations arise than in old stable colony. To examine the ability of beetles to avoid collisions with ants we used two experimental techniques. In laboratory, we tested carabids ability to avoid a clash in a Y-

Early Permian terrestrial apex predator regurgitalite indicates opportunistic feeding behaviour.

Fossilised digestive remains (bromalites) provide unique insights into extinct animals' behavioural ecology, physiology and diet. We describe fossilised regurgitated stomach content from the early Permian Bromacker locality (Thuringia, Germany) using micro-CT, osteological, chemical and taphonomical analyses. The regurgitalite consists of a compact cluster of 41 bones with a unique taphonomic signature, including sub-articulated, aligned long bones, an irregular overall shape, and low phosphorus contents in the near-bone matrix. The multitaxic elements comprise a maxilla attributed to the capt

Why do birds construct nest tails? A test of disruptive camouflage in the blue manakin.

Nests are extended phenotypes capable of providing brood protection against predators, and because they are motionless structures, camouflage is expected to emerge. Birds from different families construct a tail of hung materials underneath their nests, which has been hypothesized to be a type of disruptive camouflage, i.e. an appendage that gives a nest a false shape for hindering detection by predators. Predictions of this hypothesis are that for predators that are visually oriented, nests without a tail are easier to detect, yet this hypothesis never received support likely because predator

Bilateral asymmetry in craniofacial structures and kinematics of feeding attacks in the scale-eating cichlid fish, Perissodus microlepis.

Cichlid fishes are a textbook example for adaptive radiations, since they diversified into several hundred highly specialized species in each of three great East African lakes. Even scale-eating, an extremely specialized feeding mode, evolved independently multiple times in these radiations and in Lake Tanganyika alone, six endemic scale-eating species occupy this extremely specialized ecological niche. Perissodus microlepis went a step further, by evolving bilaterally asymmetrical heads with an intra-specific polymorphism where left- and right-headed morphs predominantly scrape scales from th

Current predation risk has opposing effects on social learning of foraging locations across two guppy populations.

Social learning, where animals learn from other individuals, occurs in many diverse species. The influential but debated 'costly information' hypothesis posits that animals will rely more on social information in high-risk contexts, such as under increased predation risk. We examined and compared the effects of perceived predation risk on social learning of foraging sites in female Trinidadian guppies from wild and domestic populations raised in common-garden environments. We used a demonstrator-observer pairing where a subject could observe conspecific 'demonstrators' feeding from one of two

Artificial light at night enhances defensive behaviour in aquatic shredders under predation risk.

Caddisfly larvae (Trichoptera) are aquatic invertebrates that contribute to the decomposition of coarse particulate organic matter, such as plant litter in streams. Artificial light at night (ALAN) can interfere with their behaviour, particularly in the presence of a predation threat. We investigated the effects of various types of ALAN on Lepidostoma hirtum, a common caddisfly species in running waters. We tested its behaviour (activity and tendency to hide) under different light conditions: in darkness, in white warm LED light and in HPS (high-pressure sodium) lamp light (at 2 lx), with and

Foraging dives of southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) in relation to larger zooplankton size prey availability in Golfo Nuevo, Península Valdés, Argentina.

Southern right whales (SRWs, Eubalaena australis) have been observed feeding both at and below the surface (< 10 m) in Golfo Nuevo (42°42' S, 64°30' W), Península Valdés, Argentina, an area traditionally recognized as calving ground. In addition, we documented diving feeding behavior in SRWs during their stay in this gulf, which has not been previously described. We assessed this behavior using suction-cup-attached video-imaging tags (CRITTERCAMs) on individual whales. A total of eight CRITTERCAM deployments were successful, and feeding events were documented in all SRWs successfully equipped

Detection of relatedness in chemical alarm cues by a selfing vertebrate depends on population and the life stage producing the alarm cue.

Aquatic prey have impressive abilities to extract information from a variety of chemical cues. For example, they can use the alarm cues released by wounded individuals during a predator attack to learn about predation risk, and they can also distinguish kin from non-kin individuals during interactions. However, it remains unclear whether animals can combine this information on predation risk with kin recognition of the particular individuals under threat. To examine how the relatedness of the individuals in alarm cue affects behaviour we used the self-fertilizing hermaphroditic mangrove rivulu

Patrolling the border: Billfish exploit the hypoxic boundary created by the world's largest oxygen minimum zone.

Pelagic predators must contend with low prey densities that are irregularly distributed and dynamic in space and time. Based on satellite imagery and telemetry data, many pelagic predators will concentrate horizontal movements on ephemeral surface fronts-gradients between water masses-because of enhanced local productivity and increased forage fish densities. Vertical fronts (e.g. thermoclines, oxyclines) can be spatially and temporally persistent, and aggregate lower trophic level and diel vertically migrating organisms due to sharp changes in temperature, water density or available oxygen.
