INTRODUCTION: Oral changes observed during pregnancy have been studied for many years, but their magnitude and frequency have not been stressed upon. This study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of oral lesions during different trimesters of pregnancy and their correlation with salivary pH change.

Prenatal diagnosis was performed in two successive pregnancies of a mother with a previous child with purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP) deficiency. In one pregnancy, an affected fetus was diagnosed in the 18th week of gestation after the demonstration of PNP deficiency in cultured amniotic fluid cells. Also an abnormal purine nucleoside profile was found in the amniotic fluid. The diagnosis of an affected fetus was confirmed by the analysis of cultured fetal skin fibroblasts and placental villi. BACKGROUND: Transient diabetes insipidus may rarely present during late pregnancy and/or the immediate puerperium, and if unrecognized, may cause neurologic injury and threaten the lives of mother and fetus. However, when recognized early and treatment is initiated with desmopressin acetate, an analog of vasopressin that is resistant to vasopressinase, water loss in the urine is eliminated and complications may be abrogated. The second and third trimester of pregnancy is a period of extensive physical growth and maturation of the fetus. Unfortunately, it is also a period that is marked by complications that can be life threatening for both the mother and fetus. The top three complications that affect pregnancy are hemorrhage, infection, and the hypertensive diseases of pregnancy. This article focuses on preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes, chorioamnionitis, bleeding in later pregnancy, and the hypertensive diseases of pregnancy.

Two patients in the third trimester of pregnancy were subjected to laparoscopic cholecystectomy for the treatment of symptomatic gallstone disease. Indications for the procedure were acute cholecystitis in the first case and biliary pancreatitis associated to recurrent biliary pain in the second one. The authors suggest their experience in pregnancy interruption in the second trimester by means of extra-amnionic transcervical application of sterile 0.1% rivanol solution. Forty-two women with abnormal ultrasound findings after 27 weeks' gestation underwent a placental biopsy. In 39 cases, a karyotype was obtained from a direct preparation within 48 h, five abnormal karyotypes being detected (four trisomies and a triploidy). Studies were carried out on 167 pregnant women, divided into 4 groups in accordance with the values of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCH).
