Idiopathic transient osteoporosis of the hip is a rare condition that was first described in a series women in their third trimester of pregnancy. The clinical course is usually benign and self-limiting. Magnetic resonance is very useful for the diagnosis. Differential diagnoses include avascular necrosis of the femoral head, septic arthritis of the hip, osteomyelitis, stress fractures, primary or secondary neoplastic processes, and referred pain from the spine or genitourinary tract in pregnant women. The authors present a case of idiopathic transient osteoporosis of the pelvis in a young non

Budesonide is a glucocorticoid with high topical activity, but low systemic bio-availability which results in reduced systemic effects in comparison with other glucocorticoids. To date, it has been evaluated for use in patients with inflammatory bowel disease when administered either orally as a controlled ileal release formulation or rectally as an enema. In comparative trials, daily treatment with budesonide enema 2 mg/100ml for 4 weeks produced endoscopic remission or improvement in 46 to 84% of patients with active distal ulcerative colitis and/or proctitis and histological remission or im

In postpartum cows expected to have corpora lutea (CL) of normal (norgestomet-treated) compared to short (control) life spans, function of the largest follicle increases after an increase in concentrations of prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF). To determine whether PGF alters follicular growth and subsequent life span of the CL, 43 crossbred beef cows (19 to 22 d postpartum) were assigned to one of four treatments: 1) control (C; n = 10), 2) control+PGF (CPGF; n = 10), 3) norgestomet (N; n = 13), 4) norgestomet+flunixin meglumine (NFM; n = 10). Flunixin meglumine inhibits prostaglandin endoperoxide

Plasma aldosterone, corticosterone, 11-deoxycorticosterone, progesterone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, 11-desoxycortisol, cortisol and cortisone were determined simultaneously in small plasma samples obtained during an i.v. ACTH (Synacthen) stimulation test in five patients (age 4-7 years) with Zellweger syndrome. The response of all ACTH-dependent steroids to Synacthen was severely impaired in all patients, despite normal basal levels. It can be concluded that the biochemical defect in adrenal steroidogenesis causing the inadequate response to ACTH injection is located proximal to progesterone. We

BACKGROUND: Vamorolone is a dissociative glucocorticoid receptor agonist for treating Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The VBP15-006 study assessed vamorolone safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics in 2- to < 4 and 7- to < 18-year-old boys with DMD. Results for 7- to < 18-year-old boys, either corticosteroid (CS)-untreated or switching from prior CS treatment, are reported here. Exploratory objectives included efficacy and pharmacodynamic biomarkers related to safety.
METHODS: In this phase II, open-label, multiple-dose study, participants received 2 or 6 mg/kg/day vamorolone for 12 wee

A 78-year-old woman with a history of intractable otitis media presented with a fever, hearing impairment, thigh pain, and a skin rash. She had renal dysfunction, positive myeloperoxidase-antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody, otitis media, and multiple nodules in both lungs. She was diagnosed with granulomatosis with polyangiitis, crescentic glomerulonephritis, and interstitial nephritis, which was confirmed in a kidney biopsy specimen. Induction therapy with rituximab and avacopan without glucocorticoids promptly resolved her fever and thigh pain and improved her auditory acuity and nodule

Background: We evaluated satisfaction with use of a segesterone acetate and ethinyl estradiol (0.15/0.013 mg) contraceptive vaginal system (CVS) among women who had recently used a monthly contraceptive vaginal ring or contraceptive pills. The CVS is a ring-shaped device used in a 21-days-in/7-days-out regimen for 13 cycles. Materials and Methods: We analyzed post hoc satisfaction responses at cycle 3 and end of study (EOS) from a subset of participants with documented recent use of the monthly ring or daily pills before enrollment in a multinational, phase 3, 13-cycle trial evaluating the CVS

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to highlight updates in the standard of care recommendations for DMD, and to describe approaches to and recent advances in genetic therapies for DMD.
RECENT FINDINGS: Treatment of DMD patients with the corticosteroids prednisone or deflazacort remains the standard of care, and recent data shows that early treatment (as young as 5 months) with a weekend dosing regimen results in measurable improvement in motor outcomes. A mutation-specific therapy directed at restoring an open reading frame by skipping exon 51 is FDA-approved, and therapies dire

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a disease linked to the X-chromosome which affects 1 in 3,600-6,000 newborn males. It is manifested by the absence of the dystrophin protein in muscle fibres, which causes progressive damage leading to death in the third decade of life. The only medication so far shown to be effective in delaying the progression of this illness are corticosteroids, which have been shown to increase muscle strength in randomised controlled studies; long-term studies have demonstrated that they prolong walking time and retard the progression of respiratory dysfunction, dilate

The jundiá Rhamdia quelen (Quoy and Gaimard) is a teleost species from the Siluridae family and is an important species for aquaculture in temperate and subtropical climates. Gonad and blood tissue samples were taken from cultured jundiá females between 1998 and 1999. Plasma concentrations of 17beta-estradiol (E(2)), testosterone (T), 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT), 17-hydroxy-4-pregnene-3,20-dione (17-P), 17,20beta-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20beta-P), and 17,20beta,21-trihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (20beta-S) were measured by radioimmunoassay and potential correlations with the stage of oogenesi

Growth failure is a frequent side effect of long-term high-dose glucocorticoid therapy in children. Pharmacological doses of glucocorticoids interfere at different levels with the integrity of the somatotropic hormone axis. The majority of patients on chronic corticosteroid medication present with overt GH hyposecretion, apparently due to enhancement of hypothalamic somatostatin release. Glucocorticoids also inhibit IGF bioactivity by the induction of IGF inhibitors and stimulate the production of certain IGFBPs. In addition, glucocorticoids inhibit growth directly at the tissue level by suppr

Budesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid that is used prophylactically to reduce the underlying inflammation and consequent airways narrowing associated with asthma. Widespread clinical experience has shown that inhaled budesonide is effective and well tolerated, and its use is well established in the management of adult and childhood asthma. In developed countries, asthma is a major health problem and consumes a large proportion of healthcare resources. Both the prevalence and severity of asthma appear to be increasing. Additionally, asthma-related mortality has been reported to have gradually

A patient with a 15 year history of diarrhoea of unknown origin is described. Scintigraphy with technetium-99m labelled albumin suggested albumin loss at the terminal ileum and caecum; subsequent colonoscopic biopsies of these macroscopically normal looking areas showed abundant infiltration with eosinophils. A diagnosis of eosinophilic enterocolitis was made. Treatment with prednisolone had good results, but had to be stopped because of severe side effects. Oral cromoglycate and mesalazine were not effective. Budesonide (CIR), a new topically active corticosteroid with very little systemic ef

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare disease of undetermined cause. The most frequently seen symptom is redness and swelling of cartilaginous ear, followed by cartilage inflammation elsewhere in the body and inflammation of special sense organs. This report describes recurrent attacks of relapsing polychondritis in one patient, who responded to low doses of corticosteroid therapy. The great relevance of cutaneous vasculitis in our patient, lead us to suggest that PR may fall in to the spectrum of systemic vasculitis.
