Trait-related changes in brain network topology in premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

The female predominance in the prevalence of depression is partially accounted by reactivity to hormonal fluctuations. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a reproductive subtype of depression characterized by cyclic emotional and somatic symptoms that recur before menstruation. Despite the growing understanding that most psychiatric disorders arise from dysfunctions in distributed brain circuits, the brain's functional connectome and its network properties of segregation and integration were not investigated in PMDD. To this end, we examined the brain's functional network organization in

Contraception counseling for women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD): current perspectives.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) affecting up to 7% of reproductive age women. Women with PMDD are of reproductive age; therefore, contraception and treatment of PMDD are important considerations. The disorder as described in the DSM-V is characterized by moderate to severe psychological, behavioral and physical symptoms beginning up to two weeks prior to menses, resolving soon after the onset of menstruation and significantly interfering with daily functioning. PMDD develops in predisposed individuals after they are exposed to progesterone

Efficacy and tolerability of premenstrual use of venlafaxine (flexible dose) in the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

The objective of this study was to examine the efficacy and tolerability of intermittent dosing of venlafaxine for the treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder. One hundred and twenty-four women aged 18 to 45 years, with regular menstrual cycles and who reported significant premenstrual symptoms, were assessed prospectively to confirm their diagnosis of premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Twenty subjects with confirmed premenstrual dysphoric disorder entered a single-blind, placebo phase (1 cycle). Placebo nonresponders (n = 12) received 2 cycles of intermittent (premenstrual) treatment with

The multifactorial aetiology and management of premenstrual dysphoric disorder with leuprorelin acetate.

Up to 18% of women of reproductive age may experience symptoms during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or its more severe form, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). A plethora of symptoms have been described, but both are commonly associated with other mood-related disorders such as major depression causing significant life impairment. Originally known as late luteal phase dysphoric disorder in the DSM-III-R (American Psychiatric Association 1987), the syndrome was renamed PMDD in the DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association 1994). Between 3% and

Trait- versus state- grey matter volume alterations in premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is characterized by symptoms of irritability, affective lability, anxiety, and depression, which occur only in the luteal phase of ovulatory menstrual cycles. This offers an ideal model to assess the neural correlates of the on and off switch of mood symptoms. Recently, we highlighted differences in grey matter volume between individuals with PMDD and healthy controls during the luteal phase, depicting smaller volumes in those diagnosed with the condition. However, it is unknown whether such alterations represent state-like changes specific to

[Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD): Drug and psychotherapeutique management, a literature review].

INTRODUCTION: Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) was first recognised in July 2013 in the DSM-5 after a long journey to identify its existence. It was not until 1983 that the US National Institute of Mental Health determined research criteria for the study of PMS. In 1994, the term "premenstrual dysphoric disorder" (PMDD) replaced this term in the 4th edition of the Diagnostic System Manual (DSM). It was listed in the section "Mood Disorder Not Otherwise Specified" and remained under consideration until the DSM-5, in which it appeared in the depressive disorders section. The legitimisation

Brain activation during emotion regulation in women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

BACKGROUND: Difficulties in regulating emotions are linked to the core symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). We therefore investigated the neural substrates of emotion-regulation problems in women with PMDD. METHODS: On the basis of self-evaluations over 2 months on the Daily Record of Severity of Problems, eligible participants were assigned to two groups: PMDD and control (18 per group). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a well-validated task were used to assess brain function during emotion regulation. Participants were tested twice, once during the follicular

Toxoplasma gondii Infection and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome. The influence of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) infection on clinical features in women with this disorder has not been studied. Therefore, we determined the association of T. gondii infection with symptoms and signs in women suffering from premenstrual dysphoric disorder. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study of 151 women suffering from premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Anti-Toxoplasma IgG and IgM antibodies were detected in sera of the participants using enzyme-linked immunoassays (EIAs). In additio

How does premenstrual dysphoric disorder relate to depression and anxiety disorders?

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a severe variant of premenstrual syndrome that afflicts approximately 5% of all women of fertile age. The hallmark of this condition is the surfacing of symptoms during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, and the disappearance of symptoms shortly after the onset of menstruation. Whereas many researchers have emphasized the similarities between PMDD and anxiety disorders, and in particular panic disorder, others have suggested that PMDD should be regarded as a variant of depression. Supporting both these notions, the treatment of choice for PMDD, t

[Assessment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder symptoms: population of women in Casablanca].

Menstruation is a biological phenomenon that has been subject of myths and taboos within and among various cultures. These myths distort the reality surrounding menstruation and create ambivalent feelings about the value and usefulness of this function outside of its necessity as mean of reproduction. Thus studies concerning menstruation need to take into account cultural and psychosocial factors that define the meaning, values and behavior associated with this biological phenomenon. According to several studies, 70% of women experience psychological faintness during this menstrual phase, 40%

Women's experiences of living with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD): A scoping review.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) are conditions related to hormonal fluctuations that occur during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Understanding the experiences of women with these conditions is vital to providing appropriate and effective care. A scoping review was undertaken to explore available global literature on women's experiences of living with PMS or PMDD, highlighting gaps in the literature. Nineteen studies were included in the scoping review, and all studies were qualitative or had a qualitative component. Four main themes were identif

Variance in Mood Symptoms Across Menstrual Cycles: Implications for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) remains a controversial diagnosis: Some authors have argued that it pathologizes normal mood changes, and others have questioned the need for daily mood reports across multiple cycles. In the present study, we examined changes in mood among psychologically healthy young participants with regular menstrual cycles. We collected daily reports of negative mood (depression, nervousness, irritability, and fatigue) across two to six consecutive cycles from 27 participants aged 18-35 years, and we used variance decomposition analyses to examine how much of the va

Gonadotrophic hormone and reinforcement sensitivity systems in women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

AIM: Behavior inhibition and behavior approach system (BIS/BAS) determine the sensitivity to aversion and rewarding stimuli, respectively. This study aimed at evaluating the BIS/BAS of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and effect of estrogen and progesterone on the BIS/BAS. METHODS: Women with PMDD without treatment and control subjects were recruited from the community. The PMDD diagnosis was based on psychiatric interviewing and the result of two-menstrual-cycle follow up. A total of 67 women with PMDD and 75 control subjects were recruited and entered the final analysis. They were eva

Luteal serum BDNF and HSP70 levels in women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome characterized by psychological and somatic symptoms commencing in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and concludes with menstrual bleeding. PMDD affects 3-8 % of premenopausal women and represents a significant public health problem especially in young women. Decreased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels are associated with several mental disorders. Heat-shock protein-70 (HSP70) is an important member of the molecular chaperone system, which provides a molecular defense against proteotoxic stress.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder amongst Nigerian university students: prevalence, comorbid conditions, and correlates.

AIMS: The rate of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) amongst sub-Saharan Africans is unknown. This study aimed to estimate the rate of PMDD amongst Nigerian undergraduates and to evaluate psychosocial correlates and comorbid psychiatric conditions. METHOD: Female university students (n=410) completed questionnaires detailing sociodemographic, menstruation, and gynaecological history. They also completed the Big Five Personality Inventory (BFI), and the presence of PMDD and any other DSM-IV axis 1 psychiatric diagnosis was assessed with the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MI

Defining Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex: using Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder as a framework for proposing preliminary diagnostic criteria.

Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER) is a distinct neurobiological condition characterized by negative alterations in mental state in response to milk letdown during lactation. Symptoms vary by patient and can include feelings of sadness, anxiety or agitation. Importantly, the symptoms are brief, typically lasting no more than 5 minutes. Prevalence has been found between 6 and 27% of lactating women, but studies show heterogeneity, due in part to inconsistent definition. D-MER is not currently classified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or the International

The Effect of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder Diagnosis and Severity on Depression Sensitivity.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is thought to be associated with depressive disorder. In our study, the depression susceptibility of female patients with PMDD was assessed using the depression sensitivity scale, which is different from previous studies. The study was conducted on 32 PMDD patients aged 18-40 years who applied to the psychiatry outpatient clinic and 30 healthy controls. The mean age of women diagnosed with PMDD was similar ( p = 0.467). The probability of having a family history of PMDD was significantly higher in the PMDD group than in the control group (χ 2 = 11.182, p

Association between Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder in a Diagnostic Interviewing Study.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) demonstrates predictable, cyclic, affective and somatic symptoms that are aggravated in the late luteal phase and are resolved by menstruation. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is characterized by excessive and persistant worry. The present study aims to evaluate the association between PMDD and GAD. The fluctuations of behavior inhibition, anxiety, depression, and irritability were also evaluated during the menstrual cycle among women with PMDD and healthy women. Methods: There were 100 women diagnosed with PMDD based on a psychiatric interview and on
