OBJECTIVE: Investigations in recent years confirm the importance of "anger coping-behaviour" for women suffering from different diseases such as migraine, high blood pressure and coronary heart disease. The hypothesis for this investigation was that "anger-in" coping (anger-suppression) is a possible causal factor in the premenstrual syndrome.
METHODS: Data analysis was undertaken on 38 patients (average age 32 years) fulfilling the inclusion criteria. The Menstrual Distress Questionnaire (MDQ) was used for measuring the intensity of premenstrual symptoms. As a result of a cluster analysis of

The prevalence and symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) were studied in a survey using a random selection of fertile women (n = 1,852). The prevalence of PMS was 72.8%. 7.5% of the women with PMS felt they needed to see a physician. The survey responses from this latter group were compared with the answers from the remaining women with PMS. The symptoms differ significantly in many respects between the groups. Women who want to see a physician report, to a greater extent, symptoms during the premenstrual period which are seen in depressive states. Oral contraceptives do not seem to affect p

We studied 10 normal and asymptomatic patients with ovulatory cycles and measured serum sodium, potassium, FSH, LH, prolactin, estradiol, progesterone and cortisol. The findings were compared with the levels in 25 patients with ovulatory cycles with premenstrual symptoms (PMS) lasting for 7-14 days prior to the onset of menstrual flow. We found no significant difference in serum sodium and potassium levels between the asymptomatic (control) group and the PMS group, or between the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle. We found no difference in hormone levels other than an altered

PURPOSE: Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and severe cases of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) are characterised by fluctuations in mood and behaviour across the menstrual cycle and cause severe and disabling symptoms for some females. Difficulties with emotion regulation (ER) are considered key experiences of people with PMDD and severe PMS. The present review aims to summarise relevant research on ER in PMDD and PMS and integrate results in the extended process model (EPM) of ER. We aimed to answer whether group differences in ER exist between people with and without PMDD and PMS, and wheth

In this study, we aimed to determine the association of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) with maternal antenatal depression. This cross-sectional, online questionnaire-based observational study included 212 pregnant women between gestational ages 24 weeks and 28 weeks 6 days. PMS and PMDD were measured using the PMDD Scale, and maternal antenatal depression was evaluated using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Baseline characteristics, clinical information, and associated factors were also included in the questionnaire. Analyses were conducted using

Premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder become episodically manifest during the second half of the female menstrual cycle and are characterized by psychological and physical symptoms causing relevant functional and social impairments. Mood swings, depression and dysphoria are associated depressive symptoms. Therefore, affective disorders should be considered as a differential diagnosis. Of women in reproductive age 3-8% suffer from premenstrual syndrome and 2% of women are affected by premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Genetic and sociobiographical risk factors are discussed. F

PMS/PMDD is a pervasive problem with a significant impact on the quality of life of affected individuals. This condition most often begins in adolescence with the establishment of normal ovulatory menstrual cycles; however, the underlying pathophysiology has yet to be delineated. Prospective evaluation is key to the confirmation of the diagnosis before the initiation of pharmacotherapy, especially psychotropic therapies, due to the possibly harmful side effect profile for adolescents compared to adults. Similarly, dysmenorrhea is common in adolescents. Although the majority of cases are primar

To determine whether changes in peripheral vitamin A levels are associated with symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), 10 PMS patients and 10 controls were studied. They gave blood at 2- or 3-day intervals through three menstrual cycles. The vitamin A was measured by fluorometry after cyclohexane extraction. In the controls, vitamin A values were 68.0 +/- 3.2 micrograms/dL (mean +/- SE) during the luteal phase and 69.8 +/- 4.2 micrograms/dL during the follicular phase. No significant changes were noted between the two values. In the patients, the values were 73.9 +/- 4.2 micrograms/dL during

Three categories of treatments for premenstrual syndrome (PMS) have been proposed: those designed to correct the cause of the disorder; those designed for symptom relief; and those aimed at eliminating the menstrual cycle. Many of these recommendations are based on poor research with loose definitions of the disorder and uncontrolled open trials. This paper reviews the literature on treatment methods with emphasis on recent random, placebo controlled, double-blind studies. The most effective current management of PMS is a conservative one including accurate diagnosis, stress control, sensible

Lack of information about the natural history of the premenstrual syndromes may make efforts regarding classification and treatment misguided. Thus, we report a naturalistic and noninstrusive approach to the problem of identification of the premenstrual syndromes, with particular focus on the issue of compliance with 2 months of daily prospective recordkeeping. Seventy-nine patients presenting for treatment of severe premenstrual symptoms were evaluated with a structured interview, psychological tests, and 2 months of daily prospective ratings of their symptoms. Weekly group follow-up meetings

Bromocriptine, 2.5 mg twice a day was tested for its effect on premenstrual tension in a random double-blind cross-over trial. 1. The compound tended to lessen the symptoms, especially mastodynia. 2. Serum prolactin levels around the upper limit of the normal range were significantly lowered. Patients with the highest starting prolaction levels had the most severe symptoms and in these patients the fall in the levels was greatest. 3. Serum FSH and LH levels were significantly reciprocally influenced compared with serum prolactin. Serum estradiol-17-beta and progesterone did not change during t

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) are prevalent emotional disorders in females, characterized by cyclic variations in physiological stress responses and emotional symptoms that correspond with the menstrual cycle. Despite extensive research, the underlying causes of these disorders remain elusive. This review delves into the neurobiological mechanisms connecting stress-induced neuroinflammation with PMS/PMDD. Additionally, it traces the conceptual development and historical context of PMS/PMDD. The review further evaluates clinical evidence on the associati

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite the considerable prevalence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in women with migraine, little attention has been given to the applied premenstrual coping strategies and their impact on headache severity, especially in menstrual migraine (MM). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the severity of PMS, the Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), the coping strategies used among women with MM versus those with non-MM, and to determine their impact on their perceived headache burden.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, existing diary data covering at least

More than 60% of the women in both groups suffered from premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms, such as anxiety, mastalgia, insomnia, nausea and gastrointestinal disorders, whereas a smaller number of women suffered from phobic disorders, premenstrual headaches and migraines. There were three women from the first group and seven women from the second group who continued the medication treatment with progestins, whereas one woman from the first group and nine women from the second group continued to take fluoxetine. In the first group, nine women stopped having PMS symptoms after two AP treatment

Although selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are considered the first-line treatment option for premenstrual syndrome, several other such options are also available. Multiple studies have indicated that medications that suppress ovulation alleviate premenstrual emotional and physical symptoms. However. the use of such medications, such as the gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists, leads to prolonged low estrogen levels and cardiac and osteoporotic health risks. A recent double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 466 women with premenstrual syndrome reported that calcium was effective in r
