Management of dental patients with allergies to natural rubber latex.

Reports of serious allergic reaction to natural rubber latex (NRL) are not uncommon in dentistry. The prevalence of Type I allergies in high-risk patient groups can range as high as 17% for health care professionals and over 50% in patients with spina bifida. A Type IV allergy to NRL chemical additives, also known as allergic contact dermatitis, is common in health care professions. To safeguard patients and coworkers, dentists must learn to recognize patients and workers at risk for NRL allergies, identify the associated symptoms, implement preventive measures, and encourage thorough diagnost

Re-architecting oral healthcare for the 21st century.

The convergent forces of rising costs, growing consumerism, expensive new treatments, sociodemographic shifts and increasing health disparities are exerting intense and unsustainable pressures on healthcare systems. As with the other health domains, these disruptive forces demand new approaches and delivery models for oral healthcare. Technological innovations and practices borrowed from the e-commerce and tech sectors could facilitate the move to a sustainable 21st century oral healthcare system, one that delivers high-quality, value-based care to wider groups of patients. The broad reach of

Preventive management of carious lesions: from non-invasive to micro-invasive operative interventions.

Understanding that dental carious lesions occur as a result of the action of micro-organisms in the dental plaque biofilm, where demineralisation on the tooth surface is the first sign of the disease, such incipient lesions can be treated using preventive, non-operative and minimally invasive operative dentistry. If the caries process is left unmanaged, the lesions progress towards cavitation, leading to more invasive treatments. This article discusses the principles of preventive, non-invasive and micro-invasive treatments of early carious lesions, outlining the clinical situations where thes

Silent threat: A case on dental drill head aspiration.

Dentistry is a relatively safe medical field, but it carries the risk of rare yet potentially severe complications like accidental foreign body aspiration. While literature on patient safety in dentistry remains limited, this case underscores the importance of promptly recognizing and managing such incidents. A 76-year-old patient arrived at the emergency room with concerns of having ingested a dental drill head during a procedure. Despite lacking typical symptoms, imaging revealed a foreign body in the right airways, highlighting the necessity of advanced diagnostics even when signs are lacki

A Review of the Work of Dr. Jo E Frencken: The Pioneer of Atraumatic Restorative Treatment for Dental Caries.

Dr. Jo E Frencken is a stalwart in preventive dentistry and cariology. He has worked extensively in diagnosing, treating, and assessing outcomes related to dental caries. He developed the concept of a novel technique known as atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) in 1986 for caries management. ART for field settings, where only hand instruments are used for caries removal, is a benchmark discovery made in the field of dentistry. His idea of ART has been adopted by the World Health Organization and has been included as a part of the Basic Package for Oral Care (BPOC) and practiced globally. He

[Serial clinical examinations as the main approach to dental caries prevention in children].

Leading scientific and organizational prerequisites for the feasibility of clinical examination of the entire child population of the Russian Federation to the dentist is, above all, the high prevalence and intensity of dental diseases in children of all ages. As a result of many years of research and follow-up of children of preschool and school age we have proved the need to distinguish a group of children with zero activity of dental caries. The referring criteria are determined according to the results of comprehensive clinical and laboratory examination in order to determine the degree of

Dentistry in the 21st century: challenges of a globalising world.

Oral health is - literally - vital to good general health, not least because the mouth is the sentinel of the body. Dentistry, the Cinderella of health care, faces immense challenges of globalisation. Governments, having spent freely on everything from defence to social security, face mountains of debts which make budget cutbacks essential. Simultaneously, most developed countries have to pay increasing costs of caring for rapidly ageing populations. Dentistry is being pulled two ways: wealthy members of society demand high-end expensive treatment, much of it cosmetic rather than necessary to
