BACKGROUND: The U.S. Congress mandated evaluations, initiated in 1989, to determine whether extending Medicare benefits to include preventive services would improve health status, reduce costs of care, and improve health risk behaviors of beneficiaries.
METHODS: The Johns Hopkins Medicare Preventive Services Demonstration was a randomized trial in which Medicare beneficiaries were assigned either to an intervention group that was offered yearly preventive visits for 2 years and optional counseling visits to their primary care provider or to a control group that received usual care. This repor

OBJECTIVE: Pneumonia is the single-leading cause of infectious disease deaths in children under-5. Despite this challenge, the utilisation of preventive and curative child health services remains low in Ethiopia. We investigated the association between health post service readiness and caregivers' awareness of pneumonia services, care-seeking and utilisation of pneumonia-relevant immunisation in four Ethiopian regions.
DESIGN AND SETTING: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 52 districts of four regions of Ethiopia from December 2018 to February 2019. The health posts preparedness for

OBJECTIVE: We examine whether overweight and obesity are associated with disparities in clinical preventive services receipt in a unique, prospective, population-based cohort of reproductive-age women.
METHOD: We used data from the Central Pennsylvania Women's Health Study (CePAWHS) longitudinal survey of women ages 18-45. The baseline random-digit-dial telephone survey was conducted in 2004-2005 and a second telephone interview two years later; 1342 participants comprised the analytic sample. Dependent variables were seven preventive services identified at follow-up. In addition to baseline

BACKGROUND: Vaccine-preventable conditions cause preventable illness and may increase mortality in people living with mental illness. We examined how risks of hospitalisation for a wide range of vaccine-preventable conditions varied by age and sex among mental health (MH) service users.
METHODS: Linked population data from New South Wales (NSW), Australia were used to identify vaccine-preventable hospitalisations (VPH) for 19 conditions from 2015 to 2020. Adult MH service users (n = 418 915) were compared to other NSW residents using incidence rates standardised for age, sex and socioeconomic

Preventive health screenings are essential for survivors of adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors, who are at greater risk for non-cancer related death compared to individuals without a history of cancer. However, little research exists examining their use of screening services. In order to identify potential areas for targeted improvements in AYA survivorship care, we examined adherence to United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) screening recommendations among members of Kaiser Permanente Southern California. The study population included individuals diagnosed with c

BACKGROUND: The increasing number of patients with chronic diseases represents a challenge for health care systems. The Chronic Care Model suggests a multi-component remodelling of chronic disease services to improve patient outcomes. To meet the complex and ongoing needs of patients, chronic disease prevention and management (CDPM) has been advocated as a key feature of primary care producing better outcomes, greater effectiveness and improved access to services compared to other sectors. The objective of this study is to evaluate the adaptation and implementation of an intervention involving

The outline of a study in occupational health services (OHS) on the prevention and control of effects of whole-body vibration is described and preliminary results are presented here. The study comprises an inventory of current activities of occupational health services in vibration-related issues, the development of a specific OHS-programme and evaluation of this programme, mainly on process level. Results of the inventory, a questionnaire survey in occupational health services (n = 112, response 67%), show that the impact of OHS in prevention and control of adverse health effects is small. Th

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a risk factor for advanced liver disease and mortality; however, efficacious direct-acting antiviral therapy is available for those who are screened for and ultimately diagnosed with HCV, highlighting the importance of population-based screening. For nearly 25 years, the Veterans Health Administration's (VHA) National Viral Hepatitis Program has leveraged resources to improve screening, diagnosis, and access to HCV care. We aim to assess the status of HCV screening in veterans in care 2021-2023 and identify emerging high-prevalence groups to direct future

This study focused on the use of 14 evidence-based preventive services for the low-income population over age 50: colorectal, breast and cervical cancer screening, cholesterol screening, counseling around diet, exercise, tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs, and immunizations for influenza, tetanus and pneumonia. Population characteristics and rates of delivery of these preventive services are compared for low-income users of community health clinics vs private doctors' offices/HMOs. OBJECTIVE: To examine how social determinants of health (SDOH) influence the utilization of preventive health services at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Erie, Pennsylvania, using the Andersen and Aday behavioral model (Andersen, 1995; Aday & Andersen, 1974).
METHODS: A cross-sectional, descriptive correlational study was conducted among adults (≥18 years) receiving primary care at Community Health Net from March through October 2018. The data was collected via a self-administered questionnaire, classifying variables as predisposing, enabling, or need factors, per the Andersen a

BACKGROUND: The National Health Service (NHS) Health Check programme was introduced in 2009 in England to systematically assess all adults in midlife for cardiovascular disease risk factors. However, its current benefit and impact on health inequalities are unknown. It is also unclear whether feasible changes in how it is delivered could result in increased benefits. It is one of the first such programmes in the world. We sought to estimate the health benefits and effect on inequalities of the current NHS Health Check programme and the impact of making feasible changes to its implementation.

BACKGROUND: The Affordable Care Act (ACA) increased health insurance coverage throughout the United States and improved care delivery for some services. We assess whether ACA implementation and Medicaid expansion were followed by greater receipt of recommended preventive services among women and girls in a large network of community health centers.
METHODS: Using electronic health record data from 354 community health centers in 14 states (10 expansion, 4 nonexpansion), we used generalized estimating equations and difference-in-difference methods to compare receipt of six recommended preventi
