Development of the mammalian visual system is thought to proceed in two stages. In the first stage, before birth in primates and before eye opening in altricial mammals, spontaneous activity generated by the retina and cortex shapes visual brain circuits in an activity-dependent but experience-independent manner. In the second stage, visual activity generated by sensory experience refines receptive fields. Here, we investigated the consequences of altering this sequence of events by prematurely opening one or both eyes of ferrets and examining visual receptive fields in monocular cortex after

Neurons in primary visual cortex (V1) are more resilient than those in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) in aging, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. The current study compared glutamate and neuromodulatory actions in macaque V1 to those in dlPFC, and found striking regional differences. V1 neuronal firing to visual stimuli depended on AMPA receptors, with subtle NMDA receptor contributions, while dlPFC depends primarily on NMDA receptors. Neuromodulatory actions also differed between regions. In V1, cAMP signaling increased neuronal firing, and the phosphodiesterase PDE4A was positio

In the mouse, visual extrastriate areas are located within distinct acallosal zones. It has been proposed that the striate-extrastriate and callosal projections are interdependent. In visually deprived mice, the normal patterns of callosal and striate-extrastriate projections are disrupted. It remains unknown whether visual deprivation affects the topography of V1-extrastriate projections and their relationship with callosal projections. Two anterograde tracers were injected in V1 and multiple retrograde tracer injections were performed in the contralateral hemisphere of intact and enucleated

Monocular deprivation (MD) by lid suture is one of the classic paradigms for the study of developmental plasticity in the cerebral cortex, and we have detailed knowledge of its anatomical and physiological consequences as well as underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms. However, the effects of other forms of manipulating visual input through one eye on the functional architecture of the primary visual cortex (V1) have not yet been examined directly. We compared MD by lid suture with the effects of daily monocular lens wear using either a frosted lens or a neutral density (ND) filter. We u

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurologic disorders and affects 0.5 to 1% of pregnant women. The use of antiepileptic drugs, which is usually continued throughout pregnancy, can cause in offspring mild to severe sensory deficits. Neuronal selectivity to stimulus orientation is a basic functional property of the visual cortex that is crucial for perception of shapes and borders. Here we investigate the effects of early exposure to valproic acid (Val) and levetiracetam (Lev), commonly used antiepileptic drugs, on the development of cortical neuron orientation selectivity and organization of

Human primary visual cortex is organized retinotopically, with adjacent locations in cortex representing adjacent locations on the retina. The spatial sampling in cortex is highly nonuniform: the amount of cortex devoted to a unit area of retina decreases with increasing retinal eccentricity. This sampling property can be quantified by the linear cortical magnification factor, which is expressed in terms of millimeters of cortex per degree of visual angle. In this paper, we present a new method using dynamic programming and fMRI retinotopic eccentricity mapping to estimate the linear cortical

The placement of monocular laser lesions in the adult cat retina produces a lesion projection zone (LPZ) in primary visual cortex (V1) in which the majority of neurons have a normally located receptive field (RF) for stimulation of the intact eye and an ectopically located RF (displaced to intact retina at the edge of the lesion) for stimulation of the lesioned eye. Animals that had such lesions for 14-85 d were studied under halothane and nitrous oxide anesthesia with conventional neurophysiological recording techniques and stimulation of moving light bars. Previous work suggested that a cand

Selective attention is an important aspect of brain function that we need in coping with the immense and constant barrage of sensory information. One model of attention (Feature Integration Theory) that suggests an early selection of spatial locations of objects via an attentional spotlight would also solve the 'binding problem' (that is how do different attributes of each object get correctly bound together?). Our experiments have demonstrated modulation of specific locations of interest at the level of the primary visual cortex both in visual discrimination and memory tasks, where the actual

Neurons of the visual cortex of the cat were penetrated with intracellular electrodes and postsynaptic potentials evoked by visual stimuli recorded. By alternately polarizing the cell with steady current injected through the recording electrode, IPSPs and EPSPs could be recorded and analyzed independently. Hyperpolarizing current suppressed IPSPs and enhanced EPSPs by moving the membrane potential toward the IPSP equilibrium potential. Depolarizing the cell toward the EPSP equilibrium potential enhanced IPSP. The responses to electrical stimulation of the LGN, where EPSPs and IPSPs could be di

It has been controversial whether the cytochrome oxidase (CO)-dense blobs in primate primary visual cortex (V1) and CO-dense thin stripes in visual area 2 (V2) are parts of a cortical color-processing stream that is segregated from other functional streams. One of the key pieces of evidence for the segregated color stream is the previous report of specific connections between blobs and thin stripes, which is parallel to the connections between interblobs and interstripes. To study the degree of the segregation between the proposed different streams, in the current study, anatomical tracers wer

Unified visual perception requires integration of bottom-up and top-down inputs in the primary visual cortex (V1), yet the organization of top-down inputs in V1 remains unclear. Here, we used optogenetics-assisted circuit mapping to identify how multiple top-down inputs from higher-order cortical and thalamic areas engage V1 excitatory and inhibitory neurons. Top-down inputs overlap in superficial layers yet segregate in deep layers. Inputs from the medial secondary visual cortex (V2M) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACA) converge on L6 Pyrs, whereas ventrolateral orbitofrontal cortex (ORBvl) a

Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease that affects eye structures and brain areas related to the visual system. Oxidative stress plays a key role in the development and progression of the disease. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the mitochondrial function and its participation in the brain redox metabolism in an experimental glaucoma model. 3-month-old female Wistar rats were subjected to cauterization of two episcleral veins of the left eye to elevate the intraocular pressure. Seven days after surgery, animals were sacrificed, the brain was carefully removed and the primary v

Aging is the principal risk factor for the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The hallmarks of AD are accumulation of the amyloid-β peptide 1-42 (Aβ42) and abnormal hyperphosphorylation of Tau (p-Tau) protein in different areas of the brain and, more recently reported, in the visual cortex. Recently, Aβ42 peptide overproduction has been involved in visual loss. Similar to AD, in normal aging, there is a significant amyloid deposition related to the overactivation of the aforementioned mechanisms. However, the mechanisms associated with visual loss secondary to age-induced visual cortex a

A principal characteristic of the mammalian visual system is its high capacity for plasticity in early postnatal development during a time commonly referred to as the critical period. The progressive diminution of plasticity with age is linked to the emergence of a collection of molecules called molecular brakes that reduce plasticity and stabilize neural circuits modified by earlier visual experiences. Manipulation of braking molecules either pharmacologically or though experiential alteration enhances plasticity and promotes recovery from visual impairment. The stability of neural circuitry

Visual snow syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by persistent visual disturbances and associated symptoms. Although the neural basis of the visual snow syndrome remains poorly understood, it may involve increased neuronal excitability and/or altered neuroplasticity in the visual cortex, which could, in turn, affect visual gamma oscillations. An altered excitation-inhibition balance is hypothesized to alter the modulation of gamma power and frequency by stimulation intensity, while maladaptive neuroplasticity may impact time-dependent changes in gamma power during repeated stimula

Spike and local field potential activity were recorded simultaneously from multiple sites in primary visual cortex of strabismic cats, while monocular stimulation alternated with dichoptic stimulation, inducing interocular rivalry. During interocular rivalry, there is competition between the two nonfusible stimuli presented to the two eyes, and only one stimulus is selected at any time. We biased this competition in three different ways: (1) we exploited the condition that in strabismic cats there is often one dominant eye that is selected for most of the time. (2) We presented the two stimuli

PURPOSE: Glaucoma is the main blindness-causing disease in the world. Previous neuroimaging studies demonstrated that glaucoma not only causes the loss of optic ganglion cells but also leads to the abnormal function of the optic nerve pathway and the visual cortex. However, previous studies also reported that patients with glaucoma have dysfunction in the visual cortex in a static state. Whether or not patients with primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) were accompanied by dynamic functional connectivity (FC) changes in the primary visual cortex (V1) remains unknown.
METHODS: A total of 34 pa

PURPOSE: To investigate, by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the impact of glaucomatous neuropathy of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) on neuronal activity in the primary visual cortex, which corresponds to the central normal visual field.
METHODS: Six POAG patients with asymmetric visual field damage and spared central vision were enrolled in the study. All patients underwent detailed ophthalmic examinations, including visual acuity, intraocular pressure, refraction, gonioscopy, and fundus examination. Scanning laser polarimetry with variable corneal compensation, confocal sca

Primary visual cortex (V1), traditionally considered a purely visual area, is increasingly recognized for its role in multisensory processing. According to predictive coding theory, cortical circuits generate expectations about sensory inputs (predictions) and signal deviations from them (prediction errors). To test whether V1 encodes auditory prediction errors, we recorded neuronal activity and LFP from layers IV-VI in urethane-anesthetized rats during auditory oddball and no-repetition control sequences. Recorded neurons from layers V-VI in our sample responded to tones, with many showing st
