Inhibition of varicella‑zoster virus replication by an ethanol extract of Lysimachia mauritiana.

Varicella‑zoster virus (VZV), a ubiquitous human α‑herpesvirus, is the causative agent of chickenpox and shingles. In the present study, we investigated the antiviral activity of a 70% ethanol extract of Lysimachia mauritiana (LME) against VZV. LME strongly interfered with the replication of both laboratory and clinical strains of VZV without affecting the viability of MRC‑5 cells. Moreover, LME treatment suppressed the expression of an essential viral transactivator, immediate‑early 62 protein (IE62), in addition to other lytic genes in the later phases of viral replication. The finding that

Concise synthesis of a pentasaccharide related to the anti-leishmanial triterpenoid saponin isolated from Maesa balansae.

Concise synthesis of the glycone part (a pentasaccharide) of the anti-leishmanial triterpenoid saponin isolated from Maesa balansae is reported. A late-stage TEMPO-mediated oxidation of a primary hydroxyl group to carboxylic acid has been achieved under phase-transfer conditions. Glycosylations were performed either by thioglycoside or glycosyl trichloroacetimidate activation using sulfuric acid immobilized on silica (H2SO4-silica) in conjunction with N-iodosuccinimide and alone, respectively. H2SO4-silica was proved to be a better choice as promoter than conventional Lewis acid promoters such

Peyronie's disease (PD) is characterized by the formation of palpable fibrotic tissue in the tunica albuginea of the penis. It is thought to manifest in response to recurrent microtrauma during erection in those with risk factors that may include wound-healing disorders. The initial stage of PD is thought to last from 6 to 18 months, and it is characterized by an inflammatory period with pain in approximately one-third of men. This initial phase is followed by a chronic phase when pain typically resolves and the deformity stabilizes with no additional plaque development. PD has been reported t

Yellow loosestrife (Lysimachia vulgaris var. davurica) ameliorates liver fibrosis in db/db mice with methionine- and choline-deficient diet-induced nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a liver disease caused by a nonalcoholic fatty liver, is increasing in incidence worldwide. Owing to the complexity of its pathogenic mechanisms, there are no therapeutic agents for this disease yet. The ideal drug for NASH needs to concurrently decrease hepatic lipid accumulation and exert anti-inflammatory, antifibrotic, and antioxidative effects in the liver. Because of their multipurpose therapeutic effects, we considered that medicinal herbs are suitable for treating patients with NASH. METHODS: We determined the efficacy of the alcoholic

Labisia pumila regulates bone-related genes expressions in postmenopausal osteoporosis model.

BACKGROUND: Labisia Pumila var. alata (LPva) has shown potential as an alternative to estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) in prevention of estrogen-deficient osteoporosis. In earlier studies using postmenopausal model, LPva was able to reverse the ovariectomy-induced changes in biochemical markers, bone calcium, bone histomorphometric parameters and biomechanical strength. The mechanism behind these protective effects is unclear but LPva may have regulated factors that regulate bone remodeling. The aim of this study is to determine the bone-protective mechanism of LPva by measuring the expressi

New resorcylic acid derivatives of Lysimachia tengyuehensis against MRSA and VRE by interfering with bacterial metabolic imbalance.

The abuse of antibiotics leads to the rapid spread of bacterial resistance, which seriously threatens human life and health. Now, 8 resorcylic acid derivatives, including 4 new compounds (1-4) were isolated from Lysimachia tengyuehensis by bio-guided isolation, and they inhibited both methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) (MIC = 4-8 μg/mL). Notably, 1 and 2 rapidly killed MRSA and VRE within 40 min without drug resistance in 20 days. Mechanically, they potently disrupted biofilm and cell membrane by interfering with bacterial metabolic i
