Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome: results and conclusions of a principal component analysis.

A cephalometric analysis according to Hasund, supplemented by special obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) parameters, was performed on 169 patients who had been referred from the sleep laboratory. Statistical analysis showed a correlation between specific cephalometric landmarks including posterior airway space (PAS), a soft palate length, hyoid position and posterior growth development of the mandible and OSAS severity. A principal component analysis differentiated between four subgroups of OSAS patients: (1) orthognathic obese subjects; (2) patients with a long soft palate and low-posit

Motion pattern analysis of gait in horseback riding by means of Principal Component Analysis.

As a consequence of the three interacting systems of horse, saddle, and rider, horseback riding is a very complex movement that is difficult to characterize by a limited number of biomechanical parameters or characteristic curves. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is a technique for reducing multidimensional datasets to a minimal (i.e., optimally economic) set of dimensions. To apply PCA to horseback riding data, a "pattern vector" composed of the horizontal velocities of a set of body markers was determined. PCA was used to identify the major dynamic constituents of the three natural gaits o

Assessing the treatment of male infertility through principal component analysis: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: To determine whether routine fertility treatments reorganize the systemic architecture of semen parameters in infertile men, rather than producing isolated parameter improvements. We specifically investigated whether morphology becomes more functionally integrated with motility and other core fertility indicators following treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Paired pre and posttreatment semen samples from 112 infertile men attending Faruk Medical City, Kurdistan Region of Iraq (2015-2024), were analyzed. Data included age, liquification time, abstinence days, white blood cells, seme

Chronological age estimation from human microbiomes with transformer-based Robust Principal Component Analysis.

Deep learning for microbiome analysis has shown potential for understanding microbial communities and human phenotypes. Here, we propose an approach, Transformer-based Robust Principal Component Analysis(TRPCA), which leverages the strengths of transformer architectures and interpretability of Robust Principal Component Analysis. To investigate benefits of TRPCA over conventional machine learning models, we benchmarked performance on age prediction from three body sites(skin, oral, gut), with 16S rRNA gene amplicon(16S) and whole-genome sequencing(WGS) data. We demonstrated prediction of age f

Principal component analysis of a swine injury model identifies multiple phenotypes in trauma.

BACKGROUND: Trauma is the third leading cause of death in the United States and the primary cause of death for people between the ages of 1 year and 44 years. In addition to tissue damage, trauma may also activate an inflammatory state known as trauma-induced coagulopathy (TIC) that is associated with clotting malfunctions, acidemia, and end-organ dysfunction. Prior work has also demonstrated benefit to acknowledging the type and severity of endothelial injury, coagulation derangements, and systemic inflammation in the management of trauma patients. This study builds upon prior work by combini

SLIC Superpixel-Based l2,1-Norm Robust Principal Component Analysis for Hyperspectral Image Classification.

Hyperspectral Images (HSIs) contain enriched information due to the presence of various bands, which have gained attention for the past few decades. However, explosive growth in HSIs' scale and dimensions causes "Curse of dimensionality" and "Hughes phenomenon". Dimensionality reduction has become an important means to overcome the "Curse of dimensionality". In hyperspectral images, labeled samples are more difficult to collect because they require many labor and material resources. Semi-supervised dimensionality reduction is very important in mining high-dimensional data due to the lack of co

Exploring the conformational landscapes of HIV protease structural ensembles using principal component analysis.

HIV protease, an essential enzyme for viral particle maturation, is an important drug target of HIV. Its structural conformation is a key determinant of both biological function as well as efficient binding of protease inhibitor molecules. In the present study we analyzed 471 crystal structures of HIV-1 protease to understand the conformational changes induced by mutations or binding of various ligands and substrates. We performed principal component analysis on the ensembles of the HIV-1 protease structures to explore the conformational landscapes. The study identified structural differences

Identifying biomechanical gait parameters in adolescent boys with haemophilia using principal component analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Improvements in the medical management for those with haemophilia have resulted in improved clinical outcomes. However, current treatment regimens do not alleviate all joint haemarthroses with the potential for long-term joint deterioration remaining. The evaluation of functional activities such as gait, using standardized tools to monitor children with haemophilia is emerging. AIM: This study explored differences in sagittal plane biomechanics of walking in adolescent boys aged 11-18 years with haemophilia and an age-matched group of typically developing boys. METHODS: A motio

Validating metabolic syndrome through principal component analysis in a medically diverse, realistic cohort.

BACKGROUND: The concept of metabolic syndrome has been subject to etiological and clinical controversies in recent years. Associations among the five risk factors (obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, high triglyceride levels, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) may help establish the validity of the concept, especially in a cohort representative of an actual population. METHODS: We used principal component analysis (PCA) to analyze the structure of the physiological components of metabolic syndrome in 7213 patients contained in an administrative database for the Centre Hospitalier

Recovering house price trajectories from sparse transaction data using functional principal component analysis.

In the real estate market, property prices are recorded only at the time of sale, leading to highly sparse transaction data. Recovering house price trajectories from such sparse data is therefore essential for accurate property valuation. This study models the latent price trajectory as functional data and applies functional principal component analysis (FPCA) to recover the underlying price trajectory. Real estate transaction data from the Kitsilano neighborhood in Vancouver is collected to validate the FPCA model. The first three eigenfunctions are employed to reconstruct the price trajector

Disease progression modeling of Alzheimer's disease based on variational probability principal component analysis.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder and the leading cause of dementia. Early diagnosis and monitoring of disease progression are crucial for effective intervention. This study presents a novel disease progression model based on Variational Probabilistic Principal Component Analysis (VPPCA), which uses a Bayesian framework for dimensionality reduction and uncertainty quantification. By analyzing 1,021 amyloid-positive patients from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database, we extracted 25 features, including CSF (ABETA, TAU, PTAU), PET (FDG, AV45), an

Low-Rankness Enhanced Robust Tensor Principal Component Analysis: A Nonlinear Monotonic Function Approach.

Low-rankness, recognized as an intrinsic property of high-dimensional data, plays a central role in many data recovery tasks, such as robust tensor principal component analysis (RTPCA). The main idea of RTPCA is to employ an appropriate convex or nonconvex tensor nuclear norm (TNN) to emphasize significant singular values while suppressing redundant components, thereby promoting low-rank structure of the target tensor. However, both existing convex TNNs and nonconvex TNNs still exhibit certain limitations: convex TNNs are very likely to result in suboptimal recovery due to their uniform shrink

Differentiation of Idiopathic Central Precocious Puberty From Premature Thelarche Using Principal Component Analysis.

CONTEXT: Nonprogressive premature thelarche (PT) is a self-limiting variant of early puberty, while idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP) is a disorder that causes progressive development of secondary sexual characteristics and often requires treatment. The diagnostic differentiation between these conditions is important but can be challenging since they often both initially present clinically with isolated breast development. OBJECTIVE: To describe relevant clinical variables in a large cohort of girls referred for early puberty, and to evaluate clinical and biochemical parameters to

Principal component analysis biplot visualization of electromyogram features for submaximal muscle strength grading.

BACKGROUND: Submaximal muscle strength grading is clinically significant to monitor the progress of rehabilitation. Especially muscle strength grading of core back muscles is challenging using the conventional manual muscle testing (MMT) methods. The muscles are crucial to recovery from back pain, spinal cord injury, stroke and other related diseases. The subjective nature of MMT, adds more ambiguity to grade fine progressions in submaximal strength levels involving 4-, 4 and 4+ grades. Electromyogram (EMG) has been widely used as a quantitative measure to provide insight into the progress of

Diagnosis of sudden cardiac arrest using principal component analysis in automated external defibrillators.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) consisting of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia considered as shockable rhythms is a life-threatening heart disease, which is treated efficiently by the automated external defibrillator (AED). This work proposes a novel design of the SAA, which includes a k-nearest neighbors model and a subset of 8 features extracted from the ECG segments, for the SCA diagnosis on the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal. These features are addressed as the most productive subset among 31 input features based on the evaluation of the feature correlation. The recursive f
