In most cleft centers worldwide, nasal stents are routinely used in the postoperative period to prevent collapse of the lower lateral cartilage and maintain the shape of the nostrils as well as nasal alar. Prefabricated nasal stents are expensive and do not offer options for customization. In this paper, we introduce a cost-effective technique for manufacturing nasal stents using three-dimensional scanning and printing technology.

Although application of three-dimensional (3D) printing in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) was first reported almost 30 years back, reduction in its manufacturing cost and availability of affordable 3D printing devices have popularized its use over the past few years. The 3D-printed objects include anatomical models, occlusal splints, drilling, or cutting guides and patient-specific implants (custom made plates and reconstruction devices). The anatomical model not only assists the surgeon in better understanding of the deformity or pathology but also aids in explaining the same to the pa

With the advances in affordable three-dimensional (3D) printing technology, 3D reconstruction and patient-specific 3D printed models are establishing a crucial role in the field of medicine for both educational purposes and procedural planning. 3D printed models provide physicians with increased 3D perception and tactile feedback, and enable a team-based approach to operational planning. However, performing an effective 3D reconstruction requires an in-depth understanding of the software features to accurately segment and reconstruct the human anatomy of interest from preacquired image data fr

We used three-dimensional printing technology to create an anatomical three-dimensional model of a very rare and complex cyanotic CHD in a newborn, consisting of double-outlet left ventricle, ventricular septal defect, and pulmonary stenosis. This case demonstrates how this new innovative technology allows better understanding of the anatomy in complex CHDs and permits to better plan the surgical repair.

BACKGROUND: Advances in surgical planning and 3-dimensional (3D) printing have benefitted the field of craniomaxillofacial surgery by allowing visualization of patient anatomy in settings of otherwise restricted surgical fields. Long 3D print times limit the usability of surgical planning workflows in acute trauma reconstruction. We sought to identify variables affecting print time and produce rapid-printed models with sufficient quality for prebending osteosynthesis plates.
METHODS: Three-dimensional printing variables, including resolution, print orientation, and region of interest cropping

Reduction malarplasty is utilized to reshape the facial form into an oval shape. However, complications and unfavorable results in reduction malarplasty have been reported. Reoperation of a nonunion malar complex is difficult relative to the achievement of a satisfactory outcome using the intraoral approach with a narrow surgical field because the normal anatomy has been destroyed, and previous surgery may have caused asymmetry. In this situation, computer-aided simulation surgery and surgical guides can serve as effective solutions to overcome the limitations of reoperative malarplasty using

BACKGROUND: Advances in three-dimensional imaging and three-dimensional printing technology have expanded the frontier of presurgical design for microtia reconstruction from two-dimensional curved lines to three-dimensional perspectives. This study presents an algorithm for combining three-dimensional surface imaging, computer-assisted design, and three-dimensional printing to create patient-specific auricular frameworks in unilateral microtia reconstruction.
METHODS: Between January of 2015 and January of 2016, six patients with unilateral microtia were enrolled. The average age of the patie

The utilization of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is prevalent in the fabrication of oral sustained release preparations; however, there is a lack of research on 3D-printed osmotic pump tablets. A 3D-printed core-shell structure bezafibrate osmotic pump tablet was developed based on the characteristics of rapid absorption and short half-life of bezafibrate, utilizing semisolid extrusion (SSE) 3D printing technology. First, the properties of different shell materials were investigated to define the composition of the shell, and ultimately, the optimal formulation was found to be eth

Anterior chest wall instability as a result of sternocostal non-union is a rare complication but can give rise to invalidating pain and cardiac arrhythmias. A woman in her 40s was referred to us with anterior chest wall pain and instability after a modified Ravitch procedure. Sternocostal pseudoarthrosis was seen for which multiple operations were performed which were complicated by low-grade infections. A patient-specific three-dimensional modelled and printed prostheses was used in an operation to both lift the sternum for pectus correction and to reconnect the sternum and the sternal costal

OBJECTIVE: Three-dimensional printing (3DP), or additive fabrication, is a process in which a physical 3D model is created using a multitude of 2-dimensional images. This process has been applied to numerous surgical subspecialties with growing interest for the use of 3DP in adult structural heart disease. This scoping review evaluates the use of 3DP in transcatheter and surgical aortic and mitral valve interventions as well as left atrial appendage occlusion in terms of its practical and clinical application.
METHODS: Articles were identified through PubMed and Embase using MeSH search terms

Tracheoesophageal fistula is a pathologic communication between the trachea and the esophagus that can cause severe complications and progress rapidly, potentially leading to death in a short period. This report describes a case of malignant tracheoesophageal fistula treated with an atrial septal defect occluder under digital subtraction angiography guidance using 3-dimensional printing assistance. Postoperative computed tomography and bronchoscopy showed good recovery, significant relief of infection symptoms, and marked improvement in airway irritation symptoms.

The identification and surgical closure of apical complex muscular ventricular septal defects remains a difficult problem because of their location in the ventricular septum distal to the moderating band. Three-dimensional reconstruction can help the surgeon to better understand the location and structure of congenital cardiac defects. We report the case of a child with multiple apical complex muscular ventricular septal defects closed through a hybrid approach with the aid of a 3-dimensional printed model.

There are patients with craniofacial deformity that can lead to extensive bone loss and severe disfigurement. Autologous reconstruction may be challenging in these patients, and it is usually associated with flap donor area morbidity and unfavorable aesthetic and functional results. A 51-year-old patient with human immunodeficiency virus infection, developed in the context of immunosuppression a fulminant fungal rhino-sinusitis with the need for surgical debridement, and in consequence extensive destruction of the nasal cavity and upper jaw, resulting in severe disfigurement due to nasal defor

BACKGROUND AND AIM: During post-amputation recovery or rapid body mass change, residual limb volume can change quickly, requiring frequent adjustments or replacement of the socket to maintain fit. The aim of this pilot test was to evaluate the feasibility of using a three-dimensional-printed insert to extend the service life of a prosthetic socket after substantial residual limb volume loss.
TECHNIQUE: One research subject with a well-fitting transtibial prosthetic socket had an oversized socket fabricated to simulate substantial limb volume loss. The digital shapes of the oversized and well-

The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical outcomes of orbital blowout fracture repair by using the three-dimensional (3D) printing-assisted fabrication of individual titanium mesh. Clinical and radiologic data were analyzed for 12 patients with orbital floor and/or medial wall fractures. Lower eyelid incision was used to expose the fractures. Preoperative computed tomographic data were input into an imaging software to rebuild a 3D orbit and mirror the unaffected side into the affected side to replace the demolished orbit. A resin model of the reshaped orbit was generated and used

BACKGROUND: As 3-dimensional (3D) printers and models become more widely available and increasingly affordable, surgeons may consider investing in a printer for their own cleft or craniofacial center. To inform surgeons considering adoption of this evolving technology, this study describes one multi-surgeon center's 5-year experience using a 3D printer.
METHODS: This study included 3D models printed between October 2012 and October 2017. A 3D Systems ZPrinter 650 was used to create all models. Models were subclassified by type (craniofacial vs noncraniofacial) and diagnosis, and the cost of c
