Development and Validation of an Explainable Machine Learning Model to Assess the Prevalence Probability of Gastrointestinal Heat Retention Syndrome in Children: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Health problems associated with energy metabolism imbalance have received increasing attention. Our team was the first to propose the concept of gastrointestinal heat retention syndrome (GHRS). Triggered by high-calorie diets and excessive energy intake, GHRS is strongly associated with recurrent respiratory infections and other pediatric conditions in children. Existing research on GHRS has primarily focused on risk factor analyses, and no interpretable exploratory self-assessment model for estimating prevalence probability is currently available for routine household use. Interpretable machine learning for rare events: an inverse probability weighted application to understanding glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists use and incident alcohol-related disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Large administrative datasets enable investigation of rare outcomes, but accurate individual-level prediction remains challenging. Emerging evidence suggests that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), used to treat diabetes and obesity, may reduce alcohol craving and intake. We examined predictors of incident alcohol-related disorder (ARD) using inverse probability-weighted (IPW) machine learning models, focusing on GLP-1 RA use. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the MarketScan Multi-State Medicaid Database (N = 96 460). Type 2 diabetic adult

Normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) modelling using spatial dose metrics and machine learning methods for severe acute oral mucositis resulting from head and neck radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Severe acute mucositis commonly results from head and neck (chemo)radiotherapy. A predictive model of mucositis could guide clinical decision-making and inform treatment planning. We aimed to generate such a model using spatial dose metrics and machine learning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Predictive models of severe acute mucositis were generated using radiotherapy dose (dose-volume and spatial dose metrics) and clinical data. Penalised logistic regression, support vector classification and random forest classification (RFC) models were generated and compared. Internal val

Developing a machine learning algorithm to predict probability of retear and functional outcomes in patients undergoing rotator cuff repair surgery: protocol for a retrospective, multicentre study.

INTRODUCTION: The effectiveness of rotator cuff tear repair surgery is influenced by multiple patient-related, pathology-centred and technical factors, which is thought to contribute to the reported retear rates between 17% and 94%. Adequate patient selection is thought to be essential in reaching satisfactory results. However, no clear consensus has been reached on which factors are most predictive of successful surgery. A clinical decision tool that encompassed all aspects is still to be made. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning algorithms use complex self-learning models that

Parkinson's disease subtypes and their association with probable rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder severity: a brainstem tractography and machine learning investigation.

Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) affects nearly half of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. However, the structural heterogeneity within the brainstem, which regulates REM sleep, remains largely unexplored in PD. Our objective was to identify distinct PD subtypes based on microstructural characteristics in the brainstem and examine their associations with the severity of RBD. Data, including diffusion tensor imaging and REM sleep behavior disorder screening questionnaire (RBDSQ) responses, were obtained from 124 PD patients and 61 healthy controls through the Parkinson's P

Developing a machine learning algorithm to predict the probability of aseptic loosening of the glenoid component after anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty: protocol for a retrospective, multicentre study.

INTRODUCTION: Despite technological advancements in recent years, glenoid component loosening remains a common complication after anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (ATSA) and is one of the main causes of revision surgery. Increasing emphasis is placed on the prevention of glenoid component failure. Previous studies have successfully predicted range of motion, patient-reported outcomes and short-term complications after ATSA using machine learning methods, but an accurate predictive model for (glenoid component) revision is currently lacking. This study aims to use a large international da

Development of interpretable machine learning models for predicting the probability of sepsis in patients with pulmonary fibrosis in the intensive care unit: based on MIMIC-IV and multi-database validation.

BACKGROUND: Limited by small sample size, single-institution design, and insufficient comprehensive external validation across heterogeneous healthcare systems, no study to date has systematically validated the predictive performance of machine learning models for sepsis occurrence in an intensive care unit (ICU) population with concomitant pulmonary fibrosis through multiple large-scale databases. METHODS: This retrospective multi-database study utilized two large databases to establish and validate a machine learning model for predicting the probability of sepsis occurrence in ICU patients

Predicting Progression from Normal to MCI and from MCI to AD Using Clinical Variables in the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center Uniform Data Set Version 3: Application of Machine Learning Models and a Probability Calculator.

Clinical trials are increasingly focused on pre-manifest and early Alzheimer's disease (AD). Accurately predicting clinical progressions from normal to MCI or from MCI to dementia/AD versus non-progression is challenging. Accurate identification of symptomatic progressors is important to avoid unnecessary treatment and improve trial efficiency. Due to large inter-individual variability, biomarker positivity and comorbidity information are often insufficient to identify those destined to have symptomatic progressions. Using only clinical variables, we aimed to predict clinical progressions, est

Analysis of Validation Performance of a Machine Learning Classifier in Interstitial Lung Disease Cases Without Definite or Probable Usual Interstitial Pneumonia Pattern on CT Using Clinical and Pathology-Supported Diagnostic Labels.

We previously validated Fibresolve, a machine learning classifier system that non-invasively predicts idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) diagnosis. The system incorporates an automated deep learning algorithm that analyzes chest computed tomography (CT) imaging to assess for features associated with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Here, we assess performance in assessment of patterns beyond those that are characteristic features of usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) pattern. The machine learning classifier was previously developed and validated using standard training, validation, and test set

A Hybrid Generic Framework for Heart Problem Diagnosis Based on a Machine Learning Paradigm.

The early, valid prediction of heart problems would minimize life threats and save lives, while lack of prediction and false diagnosis can be fatal. Addressing a single dataset alone to build a machine learning model for the identification of heart problems is not practical because each country and hospital has its own data schema, structure, and quality. On this basis, a generic framework has been built for heart problem diagnosis. This framework is a hybrid framework that employs multiple machine learning and deep learning techniques and votes for the best outcome based on a novel voting tec

Statistical learning of unbalanced exclusive-or temporal sequences in humans.

A pervasive issue in statistical learning has been to determine the parameters of regularity extraction. Our hypothesis was that the extraction of transitional probabilities can prevail over frequency if the task involves prediction. Participants were exposed to four repeated sequences of three stimuli (XYZ) with each stimulus corresponding to the position of a red dot on a touch screen that participants were required to touch sequentially. The temporal and spatial structure of the positions corresponded to a serial version of the exclusive-or (XOR) that allowed testing of the respective effec

Why statistical learning researchers should study nonhuman animals.

Statistical learning (SL) - the ability to detect patterns in sensory input without explicit instruction - is crucial for building internal models of the environment. In humans, it notably supports language acquisition, including word segmentation and grammar learning. Evidence across primates, songbirds, rodents, and insects indicate that SL is a widely shared evolutionarily conserved ability. The computational complexity of the mechanisms involved; however, varies between species, likely reflecting specific cognitive limitations. Alternatively, specific competences may have evolved to suppor

Impaired implicit learning in adults with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive alterations play an important role in the pathophysiology and treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN). Previous studies suggest that some implicit learning processes may be inhibited in AN. However, this has not yet been fully explored. The purpose of this study is to analyze implicit learning in patients with AN in comparison to healthy controls. METHODS: In this pilot-study, a total of 21 patients diagnosed with AN and 21 matched controls were administered the weather prediction task (WPT), a probabilistic implicit category learning task that consists of two sub-variants. The specific nature of the statistical learning deficit in developmental dyslexia: Impaired temporal and spared spatial learning abilities.

While extensive research highlights the importance of statistical learning in language acquisition and processing, its relationship to developmental dyslexia, a common developmental language disorder, remains unclear. Studies of statistical learning in dyslexia often rely on specific tasks that most likely do not cover the scope of statistical learning as a multi-componential construct, making it difficult to discover what aspects of learning are affected in dyslexia. The present study provides the first systematic examination of two major facets of statistical learning in dyslexia. We investi

On producing random binary sequences.

This experiment addressed the opinion prevailing among researchers that people are poor at producing random binary sequences. Participants tried to produce sets of sequences of outcomes of imaginary coin tosses that could not be distinguished statistically from sets expected from actual coin tossing. The results generally support the conclusion that people are not very good at this task, although the distributional properties of the sets of sequences produced are qualitatively similar to those expected of sets produced by a random process. The results do not support the common finding that peo

Expert opinion elicitation for assisting deep learning based Lyme disease classifier with patient data.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing erythema migrans (EM) skin lesion, the most common early symptom of Lyme disease, using deep learning techniques can be effective to prevent long-term complications. Existing works on deep learning based EM recognition only utilizes lesion image due to the lack of a dataset of Lyme disease related images with associated patient data. Doctors rely on patient information about the background of the skin lesion to confirm their diagnosis. To assist deep learning model with a probability score calculated from patient data, this study elicited opinions from fifteen expert doc
