Comparing traditional and online problem-based learning in child and adolescent psychiatry in Nagoya: a novel statistical approach in Japanese educational settings.

BACKGROUND: Problem-Based Learning (PBL) requires active communication and learner autonomy, which can be challenging in cultural contexts that emphasize group harmony and indirect communication, such as Japan. This challenge is often amplified when PBL is conducted in a non-native language (English), potentially inducing "foreign language anxiety." While the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a shift to online learning, the specific impact of this format on psychological barriers and student engagement in high-context cultures remains underexplored. We investigated whether the online format could

Development and validation of machine learning models for distal instrumentation-related problems in patients with degenerative lumbar scoliosis based on preoperative CT and MRI.

BACKGROUND: This investigation proposes a machine learning framework leveraging preoperative MRI and CT imaging data to predict postoperative complications related to distal instrumentation (DIP) in degenerative lumbar scoliosis patients undergoing long-segment fusion procedures. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 136 patients, categorizing based on the development of DIP. Preoperative MRI and CT scans provided muscle function and bone density data, including the relative gross cross-sectional area and relative functional cross-sectional area of the multifidus, erector spinae, paraspinal ex

Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Hip Fracture Repair in an Elderly Patient with Severe Cardiac Comorbidities and Limited Options: A Problem-Based Learning Discussion.

Perioperative right ventricular dysfunction can be life-threatening. Anesthetic management of elderly patients with hip fractures and advanced cardiac disease poses considerable perioperative risks. The problem-based learning discussion examines the management of an 87-year-old female with severe pulmonary hypertension, right ventricular dysfunction, and recent anticoagulation scheduled for urgent hip fracture repair. A tailored management approach included peripheral nerve blocks, intraoperative transesophageal echocardiographic monitoring, goal-directed hemodynamic support, and management of

The effect of problem-based learning in patient education after an event of CORONARY heart disease--a randomised study in PRIMARY health care: design and methodology of the COR-PRIM study.

BACKGROUND: Even though there is convincing evidence that self-care, such as regular exercise and/or stopping smoking, alters the outcomes after an event of coronary heart disease (CHD), risk factors remain. Outcomes can improve if core components of secondary prevention programmes are structurally and pedagogically applied using adult learning principles e.g. problem-based learning (PBL). Until now, most education programs for patients with CHD have not been based on such principles. The basic aim is to discover whether PBL provided in primary health care (PHC) has long-term effects on empowe

Fast-track flipping: flipped classroom framework development with open-source H5P interactive tools.

BACKGROUND: The availability and popularity of laptops, tablet PCs and smartphones in private and work environments offers considerable potential for reasonably integrating blended learning formats into structured medical learning environments. The promising educational principle of the flipped classroom (FC) provides the opportunity to effectively combine e-learning and face-to-face teaching within a single framework. However, similar to most blended learning formats, the FC requires a solid groundwork of structured digitized learning content. As rearranging a whole curriculum is intense and

Reimagining inclusive education through challenge-based learning: Opportunities and barriers for students with learning disabilities.

Inclusive education increasingly emphasizes pedagogical approaches that promote participation, autonomy, and meaningful engagement for all learners. Challenge-Based Learning (CBL), an educational framework that engages students in addressing authentic, real-world challenges through collaboration, inquiry, and action, has gained attention as a promising approach for fostering academic, social, and transversal skills. CBL should therefore be understood as a pedagogical framework rather than an assistive technology, even if, when combined with assistive and digital tools, it can support informati

Bodily contrast experiences in cultivating character for care.

Since 2008, in Flanders, we organize immersion sessions in a simulated context with the aim of stimulating student nurses and health professionals to learn virtuous caring. In this contribution, we first outline the purpose of this experiential learning: the cultivation of moral character. We come to the core of what we mean by moral character for care. We refer to Joan Tronto and Stan van Hooft to claim that caring is central to all aspects of nursing practice and is the basis of its moral quality. We also stipulate that caring involves the integration of action with emotions, motivations, an

Implications of problem-based education for the future of optometric practice.

BACKGROUND: Optometry is changing from single-doctor, refraction-oriented practices toward group practices in which increasingly complex patient problems are managed. To prepare students for new modes of practice, the traditional lecture style of education is being supplemented with innovative techniques, such as problem-based learning (PBL). METHODS: Using PBL in a medical or optometric environment, a group of students would be given a complete case in the Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan (SOAP) format. Then they would be asked to use the case as a basis for studying the underlyin

From resistance to acceptance in small group work: Students' narratives.

BACKGROUND: Small group work helps the development of students' collaborative attributes and their knowledge enhancement. However, teachers may face challenges when they have students who resist group work. Possible reasons of their resistance may have been generally discussed but rigorous study of this specific student population is often overlooked. OBJECTIVES: To compare the perspectives of small group learning among students who resisted group work before and after group learning. DESIGN: Students' narratives were collected before and after group work. A structured intervention consisted

Metabolic Supercharging: Active Learning Strategies for Increasing Student Engagement With Metabolism.

Metabolism is a central component of biochemistry and biochemistry education. Metabolism, however, presents a challenge to students. Many students struggle to progress beyond rote memorization of enzymes, metabolites, and reaction steps and into understanding the underlying chemical logic and metabolic principles of metabolism. To better engage students in learning metabolism, metabolic principles can be taught within an active learning framework. Active learning is a broad category of pedagogical techniques, focusing on higher order thinking, critical analysis, and group work, wherein student

Improving surgical excellence: first experience of a video-based intervention in outpatients.

BACKGROUND: There are limited opportunities for surgeons to engage in active learning programs once they achieve Fellowship, especially for non-technical skills such as communication. This study aims to address this gap by evaluating a peer-based coaching program in non-technical skill using video-recorded patient consultations from a routine outpatient clinic. METHODS: Standard outpatient consultations between consultant surgeons and patients were video recorded. The surgeon viewed the videos with a peer-coach (senior surgeon) who helped identify areas of strength and areas for improvement.

Active control enhances memory less in children with learning disabilities compared to their typically developing peers.

BACKGROUND: Active control over study, which helps to optimize memory performance, has been widely observed in adults. Recently, it has been revealed that this effect develops with age in typically developing (TD) children. However, no prior studies have directly compared active control effects between children with learning disabilities (LD) and their TD peers. This study is the first to examine how these effects manifest in both groups using the rigorous experimental paradigm. METHODS: In this study, an active learning paradigm was adopted in which TD (N = 51, 28 female/ 23 male, 8-11 years

PBL teaching design of medical genetics with the case of brachydactyly type A2.

Medical genetics, which is a frontier subject in biomedicine, is the clinical core of gene diagnosis and gene therapy. In the training of medical students, medical genetics plays an important role in bridging basic medicine and clinical medicine. In recent years, problem-based learning (PBL) has been widely used in medical education as an important method to cultivate the autonomous learning ability of medical students. In the current study, we designed and shared the research on brachydactyly type A2 (BDA2) as the main case of PBL teaching, in order to guide the students towards autonomous le
