Diffusion-weighted imaging uncovers likely sources of processing-speed deficits in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia, a devastating psychiatric illness with onset in the late teens to early 20s, is thought to involve disrupted brain connectivity. Functional and structural disconnections of cortical networks may underlie various cognitive deficits, including a substantial reduction in the speed of information processing in schizophrenia patients compared with controls. Myelinated white matter supports the speed of electrical signal transmission in the brain. To examine possible neuroanatomical sources of cognitive deficits, we used a comprehensive diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) protocol and ch

Speed of phonological and orthographic processing as factors in dyslexia: electrophysiological evidence.

The author investigated the hypothesis that speed of processing in the phonological and orthographic systems is one of the underlying variables of word-reading effectiveness. Speed of processing was assessed using measures of behavioral reaction time and electrophysiological latencies during phonological and orthographic task performance. Participants were 20 dyslexic and 20 normal-reading, male college students. An electrophysiological component complex (N1-P2-N2), as well as 2 other components (P3 and N4), was identified in both groups on each of the experimental tasks. Significant group dif

Effects of speed of processing training and transcranial direct current stimulation on global sleep quality and speed of processing in older adults with and without HIV: A pilot study.

Some older adults with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) experience poor sleep which can worsen cognition. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and cognitive training have improved sleep and cognition in studies of older adults; yet, their combined influence is unknown in adults with HIV. Older adults with HIV (n = 33) and without HIV (n = 33) were randomized to receive 10 one-hour sessions of speed of processing (SOP) training with tDCS or sham tDCS over approximately 5 weeks. tDCS with SOP training did not improve sleep. Omitting correction of multiple comparisons for this explora

Cognitive training improves working memory, processing speed, and neural efficiency in multiple sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that features multifocal white and gray matter lesions. Cognitive impairments in working memory (WM) and processing speed (PS) are common features of MS. Cognitive training has shown promise for improving cognitive deficits in MS. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of WM and PS training on performance of a 2-back WM task and 4 × 4 matrix Visual Search (VS) task and to determine the effectiveness of training as measured by a number of purported behavioral indices of

Longitudinal follow-up of verbal span and processing speed in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Neurocognitive deficits are frequently described in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), but it is unknown how these progress over time. Our aim was to longitudinally assess verbal span capacity and information processing speed in DMD and to explore a genotype-phenotype relation. Verbal span and processing speed scores were available of 28 males with DMD on two time-points, with a mean time interval of 28.34 months (SD = 16.09). The cohort contained of six patients missing only dystrophin isoform Dp427, sixteen missing Dp427 and Dp140, and six were undeterminable. A lower verbal span capacity wa

A processing speed deficit in dyslexic adults? Evidence from a peg-moving task.

Developmental dyslexia is diagnosed when literacy skills are not commensurate with a person's general cognitive ability and education. While the most common difficulty found in dyslexia is poor phonological processing, many dyslexics are reported to be clumsy, with poor handwriting, suggesting that there may be a motor deficit in dyslexia. To establish whether the motor difficulties described in dyslexic children persist into adulthood, we tested 18 dyslexic adults and 22 control participants on Annett's peg-moving task. The dyslexic participants performed significantly slower than control adu

The Impact of Verb Speed on the Processing of Goal-Oriented Visual Scenes.

Research on mental simulation in language comprehension has yielded mixed findings, with some studies reporting evidence for sensorimotor simulation during language processing and others not. The current study is a conceptual cross-linguistic replication of two eye-tracking experiments on the online processing of speed-induced language originally conducted in English. Participants heard sentences containing a fast- or a slow-motion verb in Estonian (e.g., Laps vudis/tatsas puu juurde 'The child scurried/toddled to the tree.'), while their eye-movements to a corresponding image with an Agent, P

Reduced alpha2 power is associated with slowed information processing speed in multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive impairment is common in multiple sclerosis (MS), significantly impacts daily functioning, is time-consuming to assess, and is prone to practice effects. We examined whether the alpha band power measured with magnetoencephalography (MEG) is associated with the different cognitive domains affected by MS. METHODS: Sixty-eight MS patients and 47 healthy controls underwent MEG, T1- and FLAIR-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and neuropsychological testing. Alpha power in the occipital cortex was quantified in the alpha1 (8-10 Hz) and alpha2 (10-12 Hz) bands. Next, we

Processing speed impairment in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of evidence of cognitive involvement in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) and, the reports about the involvement of the brain and central nervous system (CNS) are few and controversial. The Five Digit Test (FDT) evaluates processing speed (PS) and executive functions orally. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance on the FDT of CIDP patients with and without CNS (brain/cerebellum) alterations observed on brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans. METHODS: The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS, to assess neuropsychiatry symptoms),

Abnormal resting state FMRI activity predicts processing speed deficits in first-episode psychosis.

Little is known regarding the neuropsychological significance of resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) activity early in the course of psychosis. Moreover, no studies have used different approaches for analysis of rs-fMRI activity and examined gray matter thickness in the same cohort. In this study, 41 patients experiencing a first-episode of psychosis (including N=17 who were antipsychotic drug-naive at the time of scanning) and 41 individually age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers completed rs-fMRI and structural MRI exams and neuropsychological assessments. Slower processing speed after treatment for pediatric brain tumor and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and brain tumor (BT) survivors are at risk for post-treatment IQ declines. The extent to which lower scores represent global cognitive decline versus domain-specific impairment remains unclear. This study examined discrepancies between processing speed and estimated IQ (EIQ) scores and identified clinical characteristics associated with score discrepancies in a sample of pediatric cancer survivors. PROCEDURE: Survivors (50 ALL, 50 BT) ages 12-17 years completed cognitive testing. The Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence provided an untimed
