Coati (Nasua nasua) attacks on humans: case report.

Coatis [including Nasua nasua, the ring-tailed coati], are medium-sized mammals widely distributed in the Americas. They are social animals, whose normal diet includes insects, fruits, and small vertebrates, and rarely prey on larger sized animals. There are, to our knowledge, no reports in the medical literature of attacks on humans. This report describes a coati attack on 2 children in their home. The children sustained deep scratches and bites. The animal may have injured the humans in a defensive strike, but motivation for attack was uncertain. Coati attacks may occur in places where there

Immunohistochemical evidence of canine morbillivirus (canine distemper) infection in coatis (Nasua nasua) from Southern Brazil.

The pathological and immunohistochemical (IHC) findings associated with infection due to canine morbilivírus (canine distemper virus, CDV) are described in coatis (Nasua nasua). Tissue fragments of coatis (n = 13) that died at the Bela Vista Sanctuary, Paraná, Southern Brazil, were routinely processed for histopathology to identify the main histopathologic patterns as compared to that of the domestic dog. Selected formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue fragments of the lungs, liver, urinary bladder and small intestine were used in IHC assays designed to identify the antigens of CDV, ca

Epitheliotropic cutaneous lymphoma (mycosis fungoides) in a coati.

The aim of this report was to present a case of epitheliotropic cutaneous lymphoma (mycosis fungoides) in a coati. The animal was presented for evaluation of a non-pruritic nodule. Although the diagnosis of cutaneous histiocytoma was made histologically, plaques and erosions appeared in new areas of the skin along with rapid deterioration of body condition that led to euthanasia in less than one month following initial presentation. Epitheliotropic cutaneous lymphoma was confirmed with plaque biopsies. Cross-reactivity of a polyclonal antihuman CD3 antibody to coati T lymphocytes was also obse

Larva migrans in squirrel monkeys experimentally infected with Baylisascaris potosis.

Roundworms of the genus Baylisascaris are natural parasites primarily of wild carnivores, and they can occasionally cause infection in humans and animals. Infection results in visceral larva migrans and/or neural larva migrans, which can be severe or fatal in some animals. Recently, Baylisascaris nematodes isolated from kinkajous (Potos flavus) and previously referred to as Baylisascaris procyonis were renamed as Baylisascaris potosis; however, data regarding the pathogenicity of B. potosis towards animals and humans are lacking. In the present study, we experimentally infected squirrel monkey

Molecular survey of Besnoitia spp. (Apicomplexa) in faeces from European wild mesocarnivores in Spain.

Numerous studies have unsuccessfully tried to unravel the definitive host of the coccidian parasite Besnoitia besnoiti. Cattle infections by B. besnoiti cause a chronic and debilitating condition called bovine besnoitiosis that has emerged in Europe during the last two decades, mainly due to limitations in its control associated with the absence of vaccines and therapeutical tools. Although the exact transmission pathways of B. besnoiti is currently unknown, it is assumed that the parasite might have an indirect life cycle with a carnivore as definitive host. Current lack of studies in wildlif

Description and molecular characterisation of Babesia ailuropodae n. sp., a new piroplasmid species infecting giant pandas.

BACKGROUND: Babesia spp. are protozoan parasites that infect the red blood cells of domesticated animals, wildlife and humans. A few cases of giant pandas (a flagship species in terms of wildlife conservation) infected with a putative novel Babesia sp. have been reported. However, comprehensive research on the morphological and molecular taxonomic classification of this novel Babesia sp. is still lacking. This study was designed to close this gap and formally describe this new Babesia sp. infecting giant pandas. METHODS: Detailed morphological, molecular and phylogenetic analyses were conduct

Experimental infection of Mongolian gerbils with Baylisascaris potosis.

The present study evaluated the pathogenicity of Baylisascaris potosis, a newly described ascarid nematode, in Mongolian gerbils. Gerbils were infected with varying doses of either B. potosis or Baylisascaris transfuga embryonated eggs (100, 1,000, and 4,000) for 30 days postinfection (pi). Baylisascaris potosis-infected gerbils showed no clinical signs of disease; however, gerbils exposed to 1,000 and 4,000 B. transfuga eggs showed severe neurologic signs at 22-29 days and 14-15 days pi, respectively. Histopathologic examination revealed larvae and lesions in the intestine, lung, liver, and m

Infection of South American coatis (Nasua nasua) with highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus displaying mammalian adaptive mutations.

Deadly outbreaks among poultry, wild birds, and carnivorous mammals by the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus of the clade 2.3.4.4b have been reported in South America. The increasing virus incidence in various mammal species poses a severe zoonotic and pandemic threat. In Uruguay, the clade 2.3.4.4b viruses were first detected in February 2023, affecting wild birds and backyard poultry. Three months after the first reported case in Uruguay, the disease affected a population of 23 coatis (Nasua) in an ecological park. Most animals became infected, likely directly or indirectly from wild birds in the

Incubation periods and mortality outcomes following rabies virus infection in mesocarnivorous reservoir hosts: implications for experimental design and veterinary policy - a review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Efficacy studies are part of the regulatory requirements for obtaining marketing authorization for rabies virus vaccines intended for veterinary use. However, increasing emphasis on animal welfare and the application of the 3Rs principles (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement) may prompt a critical reassessment of current standards for such studies. A substantial amount of data from numerous published experimental studies is available, which could be used to reconsider or refine existing specifications and protocols-particularly concerning observation periods post-infection (pi)

Exploring the diversity of Rickettsia in carnivores of the Brazilian cerrado: An analysis of the relationship with ticks.

The proximity of wildlife reserve areas to anthropized regions facilitates the spread and exchange of infectious agents, including pathogens with zoonotic potential, thereby increasing health-related risks for species already threatened with extinction. This study investigated the presence of Rickettsia in wild carnivores of the Brazilian Cerrado. Blood and ectoparasite samples were collected from specimens of the families Canidae (Cerdocyon thous, Chrysocyon brachyurus, Lycalopex vetulus, Speothos venaticus), Mephitidae (Conepatus semistriatus), Procyonidae (Nasua nasua), and Felidae (Leopard

Sedative protocols for the restraint of coatis (Nasua nasua) for management and monitoring.

Coatis (Nasua nasua) are medium-sized mammals of the family Procyonidae, native of South America, characterized by an elongated nose and a long tail with alternating light and dark rings. The Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) plays a crucial role in preserving this and other species within the Iguaçu National Park, where animal capture for tracking, data collection, and medical interventions is performed. In this context, ensuring an effective sedation method is critical. This study aimed to compare the effects of two sedation protocols (dexmedetomidine-ketamine

Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) in carnivores kept in zoos in Texas, USA: risk perception, practices, and antigen detection.

BACKGROUND: Dirofilaria immitis is the causative agent of heartworm disease in wild and domestic canids, felids, and mustelids. Recent studies demonstrate that additional families in the order Carnivora are also susceptible to infection. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to (1) better understand current practices surrounding heartworm prevention and diagnostics in zoological facilities located in the state of Texas, USA, and (2) assess archival serum samples of carnivores kept in these facilities for the presence D. immitis antigen and/or antibody. METHODS: A questionnaire was comp

Ring-tailed coatis (Nasua nasua) are major carriers of ESBL-producing and diarrheagenic E. coli in an Ecological Park in São Paulo, Brazil.

Escherichia coli is widely distributed in the intestinal microbiota of vertebrates, and the presence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing strains in wild animals in urban areas is a result of anthropogenic factors. A total of 232 E. coli isolates were obtained from samples of rectal swabs from 149 coatis. Among the strains, 106 (45.7 %) were classified as MDR, and 47 (20.3 %) showed the ESBL phenotype. Among the 149 animals, 84 (56.4 %) were carriers of MDR strains, and 33 (22.1 %) carried ESBL-producing strains. Regarding beta-lactamase-encoding gene

Co-Infection and Wild Animal Health: Effects of Trypanosomatids and Gastrointestinal Parasites on Coatis of the Brazilian Pantanal.

Wild animals are infected by diverse parasites, but how they influence host health is poorly understood. We examined the relationship of trypanosomatids and gastrointestinal parasites with health of wild brown-nosed coatis (Nasua nasua) from the Brazilian Pantanal. We used coati body condition and hematological parameters as response variables in linear models that were compared using an information theoretic approach. Predictors were high/low parasitemias by Trypanosoma cruzi and T. evansi, and indices representing the abundance of distinct groups of gastrointestinal parasites. We also analyz

A molecular survey of spotted fever group rickettsiae in introduced raccoons (Procyon lotor).

BACKGROUND: The raccoon Procyon lotor (Linnaeus, 1758) (Carnivora; Procyonidae) is one of the most important and most intensively studied invasive mammal species in Europe. Within the last 30 years the raccoon has spread at an increasing rate, resulting in the establishment of local populations in various regions of Europe. In these newly colonised areas, gaps in knowledge of the raccoon's biology concern not only most aspects of its ecology in a broad sense, but also its pathogens and parasites. Most micropathogens recorded hitherto in the raccoons that have colonised Europe have documented e
