The significance of at-risk or prodromal symptoms for bipolar I disorder in children and adolescents.

While in the early identification and intervention of psychosis-specific instruments and risk criteria have been generated and validated, research into indicated preventive strategies for bipolar I disorder (BD I) has only recently gained momentum. As the first signs of BD I often start before adulthood, such efforts are especially important in the vulnerable pediatric population. Data are summarized regarding the presence and nature of potentially prodromal, that is, subsyndromal, symptoms prior to BD I, defined by first-episode mania, focusing on pediatric patients. Research indicates the po

Relationship between prodromal symptoms of psychosis and suicidal ideation among Colombian school adolescents.

Prodromal symptoms of psychosis are a public health problem that causes distress and are linked to schizophrenia. However, knowledge among school students from the community is limited. The study aimed to know the relationship of prodromal symptoms of psychosis with suicidal ideation in school adolescents from a city in the Caribbean Region of Colombia. A cross-sectional study was conducted, with participants being tenth- and eleventh-grade students. The participants filled out the prodromal symptoms questionnaire (PQ-16) and an item that assessed suicidal ideation in the last year. Odds ratio

Using prodromal non-motor symptoms to predict Parkinson's disease onset and motor phenotype.

BACKGROUND: Non-motor symptoms are highly prevalent in prodromal Parkinson's disease (PD); however, their impact on PD trajectory remains largely unexplored. We aimed to assess whether prevalent prodromal non-motor symptoms could predict future motor phenotype and time-to-PD diagnosis. METHODS: We studied the prodromal cohort of the ongoing Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (n=958), which prospectively assesses individuals with prodromal PD features (genetic: n=361, hyposmia: n=298, rapid eye movement behaviour disorder: n=136, combination: n=163) with up to 10 years of follow-up. Impact of Prodromal Symptoms on Future Adverse Cardiac-Related Events: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Recognition of specific and nonspecific cardiac-related prodromal symptoms, indicative of myocardial ischemia, is critical for preemptive coronary heart disease (CHD) screening and effective diagnosis and treatment. In this systematic review, we examined whether prodromal symptoms were predictive of acute symptom presentations, cardiac events, or treatment interventions. METHODS: Studies that measured the association of prodromal symptoms with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) symptom presentation, acute cardiac event, and/or intervention in men and/or women with confirmed CHD were in

Childhood trauma and prodromal symptoms among individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous studies point to an association between childhood trauma and the later development of psychotic illness. However, little is known about the prevalence of childhood trauma and its relationship to attenuated positive and other symptoms in individuals at heightened clinical risk for psychosis. METHOD: Thirty clinical high-risk patients (83% male, 43% Caucasian, and with a mean age of 19) were ascertained from the New York metropolitan area and evaluated for prodromal and affective symptoms, and queried regarding experiences of childhood trauma and abuse. RESULTS: Ninety-s

Usefulness of prodromal unstable angina pectoris in predicting better survival and smaller infarct size in acute myocardial infarction (The InTIME-II Prodromal Symptoms Substudy).

Prodromal unstable angina on presentation is a significant predictor of smaller infarct size, reflected by smaller creatine kinase-MB and creatine kinase total measurements and lower 30-day, 6-month, and 5-year mortality. These findings suggest that prodromal unstable angina is an important physiologic marker that should be routinely collected for risk stratification.

Narrative Review of Body-First Versus Brain-First Prodromal Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a multisystem neurodegenerative disorder in which nonmotor symptoms often precede classical motor manifestations by years. Neuropsychiatric symptoms such as REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), depression, anxiety, apathy, and mild cognitive impairment are increasingly recognized as clinically meaningful prodromal features, yet they remain underrecognized in routine practice. This narrative review summarizes literature identified through PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar between 2003 and 2025 using terms related to PD, prodromal symptoms, neuropsychiatric symptoms, a

Non-motor symptoms in prodromal Parkinson's disease are linked to reduced quality of life.

Isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) highlights an early α-synucleinopathy. This study compared health-related quality of life (hrQoL) in 62 individuals with iRBD with 19 healthy controls (HC) and 29 individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) and identified factors linked to poorer hrQoL. HrQoL was significantly lower in individuals with iRBD (83.33 ± 16.96) compared to HC (92.29 ± 5.49, p = 0.027). Poorer hrQoL in individuals with iRBD was linked to severity of multiple non-motor symptoms, most prominently fatigue and depressive symptoms being significant predictors

Prodromal Symptoms of Schizophrenia, Childhood Maltreatment, Attachment Insecurity, and Alexithymia: A Correlation Network Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Prodromal psychotic symptoms have been increasingly linked to childhood maltreatment, attachment insecurity, and alexithymia, particularly difficulties in identifying and expressing emotions. METHOD AND RESULTS: This study employed correlation network analysis to examine the interplay among early adversities, alexithymia, and prodromal psychosis symptoms in 93 adolescents (64% female) attending their first visit to a youth mental health center. Of these, 39% met the criteria for prodromal symptoms of psychosis. The network identified difficulty identifying feelings, emotional ab

The Relationship Between Sleep Quality and Prodromal Symptoms in Euthymic Patients with Bipolar Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Although sleep quality is known to be impaired in individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD) during manic, depressive, and even euthymic phases, limited research has explored its association with prodromal symptoms. This study aims to investigate the relationship between sleep quality and the frequency and severity of prodromal symptoms in patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder during euthymic periods. METHODS: The study included 98 patients with euthymic BD in remission. The participants completed the sociodemographic data form, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Bi

Insights from triggers and prodromal symptoms on how migraine attacks start: The threshold hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: The prodrome or premonitory phase is the initial phase of a migraine attack, and it is considered as a symptomatic phase in which prodromal symptoms may occur. There is evidence that attacks start 24-48 hours before the headache phase. Individuals with migraine also report several potential triggers for their attacks, which may be mistaken for premonitory symptoms and hinder migraine research. METHODS: This review aims to summarize published studies that describe contributions to understanding the fine difference between prodromal/premonitory symptoms and triggers, give insights f

Comparison of Prodromal Symptoms of Patients with Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia and Alzheimer Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is the most common clinical subtype of frontotemporal lobar degeneration. bvFTD is often characterized by changes in behavior and personality, frequently leading to psychiatric misdiagnoses. On the other hand, substantial clinical overlap with other neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer disease (AD), further complicates the diagnostics. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to identify the main differences in early symptoms of bvFTD and AD in the prodromal stages of the diseases. In addition, patients with bvFTD were analyzed separatel

Variability of prodromal signs and symptoms associated with hereditary angioedema attacks: a literature review.

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare disease caused by deficiency in the production or function of C1 inhibitor. It predisposes individuals to paroxysmal acute attacks causing painful, debilitating, disfiguring, and life-threatening angioedema. Prodromes occurring hours to days before attacks have been described in the literature; however, their significance as predictive signals of impending attacks is uncertain. Given the morbidity and mortality associated with HAE attacks and the increasing availability of therapeutic products for their treatment, identifying prodromes that accurately pred

Predicting cognitive decline using neuropsychiatric symptoms in prodromal Lewy body dementia: A longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in Lewy body dementias (LBD) occur frequently and early in disease progression. Such symptoms are associated with worse quality of life, caregiver burden and functional limitations. Limited evidence exists, however, outlining the longitudinal relationship between NPS and cognitive decline in prodromal LBD. METHODS: 123 participants were derived from three cohort studies. Patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) relating to probable dementia with Lewy bodies (MCI-LB, n = 67) and Parkinson's disease (PD-MCI, n = 56) completed comprehensive cogn
