Predictors of time to relapse in amphetamine-type substance users in the matrix treatment program in Iran: a Cox proportional hazard model application.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine which predictors influence the risk of relapse among a cohort of amphetamine-type substance (ATS) users in Iran. METHODS: A Cox proportional hazards model was conducted to determine factors associated with the relapse time in the Matrix treatment program provided by the Iranian National Center of Addiction Studies (INCAS) between March 2010 and October 2011. RESULTS: Participating in more treatment sessions was associated with a lower probability of relapse. On the other hand, patients with less family support, longer dependence on ATS, and

[The most important prognostic factors for 736 patients with adenocarcinoma of the gastric cardia: a multivariate analysis using COX proportion hazard model].

A prognostic study was done in 736 patients with primary resectable adenocarcinoma of the gastric cardia whose postoperative survival time was longer than three months. The 3-, 5-, and 10-year cumulative survival rate was 32.2%, 20.2% and 12.2%, respectively. Thirty individual variables were evaluated statistically using the cumulative survival rate by the computer's COX multivariate analysis model. The results showed that the most important prognostic variables for predicting overall survival included maximal tumor diameter, type of resection, depth of invasion and paracardial lymph node meta

Maternal ontogeny modulates auxin-associated cutting mortality in Amentotaxus formosana, with genotype-specific responses revealed by Cox proportional hazards modelling.

Amentotaxus formosana (Taxaceae) is an endangered relict conifer for which stem-cutting propagation is essential for ex situ conservation. Seed-based regeneration is unreliable in its small, fragmented, dioecious populations. However, extreme and uncharacterized cutting mortality has severely bottlenecked these efforts. Because conventional static endpoint evaluations mask the critical temporal dynamics of rhizogenesis and failure, the underlying drivers of this attrition remain obscure. Here, we applied Kaplan-Meier estimation and Cox proportional hazards modelling to a two-stage factorial ex

Comparison of the Cox Proportional Hazards Model and Random Survival Forest Algorithm for Predicting Patient-Specific Survival Probabilities in Clinical Trial Data.

The Cox proportional hazards model is often used to analyze data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with time-to-event outcomes. Random survival forest (RSF) is a machine-learning algorithm known for its high predictive performance. We conduct a comprehensive neutral comparison study to compare the performance of Cox regression and RSF in various simulation scenarios based on two reference datasets from RCTs. The motivation is to identify settings in which one method is preferable over the other when comparing different aspects of performance using measures according to the TRIPOD (Trans

A two-gene prognostic model for lung adenocarcinoma using summary-data-based Mendelian randomization analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression.

AIMS: This study aimed to develop accurate prognostic assessment tools for patients with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) using Summary-data-based Mendelian Randomization Analysis and statistical learning-based prognostic modeling methods. METHODS: We conducted SMR analysis to explore genetic associations between genes and LUAD, and analyzed differentially expressed genes (DEGs). The shared genes were subjected to the univariate Cox regression analysis and survival analysis to determine prognosis-related genes to construct a prognostic model with the multivariate Cox regression analysis. Individual

Estimating multiple time-fixed treatment effects using a semi-Bayes semiparametric marginal structural Cox proportional hazards regression model.

Marginal structural models for time-fixed treatments fit using inverse-probability weighted estimating equations are increasingly popular. Nonetheless, the resulting effect estimates are subject to finite-sample bias when data are sparse, as is typical for large-sample procedures. Here we propose a semi-Bayes estimation approach which penalizes or shrinks the estimated model parameters to improve finite-sample performance. This approach uses simple symmetric data-augmentation priors. Limited simulation experiments indicate that the proposed approach reduces finite-sample bias and improves conf

Prevalence and associated factors of teenage childbearing among Ethiopian women using semi-parametric and parametric proportional hazard and accelerated failure time models.

BACKGROUND: Teenage childbearing is a common issue for young people's sexual and reproductive health in the world, particularly in low-income countries, and affects teenagers between the ages of 13 and 19. According to several academics, adolescent pregnancy accounts for the majority of Ethiopia's population increase, and there has been little effort to address this threat. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of the time to teenage childbearing in Ethiopia. METHOD: This paper compares the results of the semi-parametric proportional hazard (PH), parametric PH, a

An analysis of excess mortality rates for persons with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in Western Australia using the Cox proportional hazards regression model.

A cohort of 888 rural, nonaboriginal persons with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus identified in Western Australia through surveys in 1978-1982 were followed for death until the end of 1986. A total of 257 deaths were observed. Excess mortality in this cohort as compared with the general Australian population was investigated by calculating standardized mortality ratios and using the Cox proportional hazards regression model with hazard rates for the general population as the baseline. The overall standardized mortality ratio was 1.83 (95% confidence interval 1.51-2.16) for women and 1.

Prognostic variables in late follow-up of aortic valve replacement using the proportional hazard model: a study on patients using the Medtronic-Hall cardiac prosthesis.

An alternative approach to the study of the follow-up of patients with heart prostheses is the use of the reliability theory (hazard function) and proportional hazard model (Cox's model). In a population of 480 patients who underwent AVR in the period from June 1977 to January 1983, with a mean follow-up time of 2.8 years, 16 preoperative variables were considered. From this pool of variables, six entered the regression model in a time-independent mode. These were age at operation, sex, preoperative NYHA classification, presence of AI, presence of endocarditis and presence of atrial fibrillati

Time to non-adherence to iron and folic acid supplementation and associated factors among pregnant women in Hosanna town, South Ethiopia: Cox-proportional hazard model.

BACKGROUNDS: Micronutrient deficits in women of reproductive age have been linked to poor pregnancy outcomes. The most common micronutrient deficits in women are iron and folate. The World Health Organization recommends daily oral iron and folic acid supplementation (IFAS) as part of routine antenatal care to lower the risk of maternal anemia and adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, the effectiveness of the supplementation relies on client's strict adherence. The aim of this study was to determine time- to- non-adherence to IFAS and associated factors among pregnant women in Hosanna Town, Sout

Big Data Information under Proportional Hazard Mathematical Model in Analysis of Hepatitis B Virus Infection Data of Patients with Interventional Liver Cancer through Antiviral Therapy of Entecavir.

The objective of this study was to analyze the application of proportional hazard mathematical model (PHMM) in Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection analysis of interventional liver cancer patients treated with entecavir, so as to provide data support for clinical diagnosis and treatment. Based on the survival analysis, the treatment factor x was undertaken as an independent variable to perform linear regression. The regression model took the hazard rate function as the dependent variable to establish an exponential regression equation to construct a PHMM. 136 patients with primary liver cancer re

Choline-to-N-acetyl aspartate and lipids-lactate-to-creatine ratios together with age assemble a significant Cox's proportional-hazards regression model for prediction of survival in high-grade gliomas.

OBJECTIVE: A long-lasting concern has prevailed for the identification of predictive biomarkers for high-grade gliomas (HGGs) using MRI. However, a consensus of which imaging parameters assemble a significant survival model is still missing in the literature; we investigated the significant positive or negative contribution of several MR biomarkers in this tumour prognosis. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of supratentorial HGGs [11 glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and 17 anaplastic astrocytomas] included 28 patients (9 females and 19 males, respectively, with a mean age of 50.4 years, standard d

Factors associated with long-stay nursing home admissions among the U.S. elderly population: comparison of logistic regression and the Cox proportional hazards model with policy implications for social work.

Two statistical methods were compared to identify key factors associated with long-stay nursing home (LSNH) admission among the U.S. elderly population. Social Work's interest in services to the elderly makes this research critical to the profession. Effectively transitioning the "baby boomer" population into appropriate long-term care will be a great societal challenge. It remains a challenge paramount to the practice of social work. Secondary data analyses using four waves (1995, 1998, 2000, and 2002) of the Health Retirement Study (HRS) coupled with the Assets and Health Dynamics among the

Predicting cardiovascular risk from national administrative databases using a combined survival analysis and deep learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Machine learning-based risk prediction models may outperform traditional statistical models in large datasets with many variables, by identifying both novel predictors and the complex interactions between them. This study compared deep learning extensions of survival analysis models with Cox proportional hazards models for predicting cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in national health administrative datasets. METHODS: Using individual person linkage of administrative datasets, we constructed a cohort of all New Zealanders aged 30-74 who interacted with public health services duri

Deep survival analysis for interpretable time-varying prediction of preeclampsia risk.

OBJECTIVE: Survival analysis is widely utilized in healthcare to predict the timing of disease onset. Traditional methods of survival analysis are usually based on Cox Proportional Hazards model and assume proportional risk for all subjects. However, this assumption is rarely true for most diseases, as the underlying factors have complex, non-linear, and time-varying relationships. This concern is especially relevant for pregnancy, where the risk for pregnancy-related complications, such as preeclampsia, varies across gestation. Recently, deep learning survival models have shown promise in add

Optimal experimental designs for accelerated failure time with Type I and random censoring.

Proportional Hazards models have been widely used to analyze survival data. In many cases survival data do not verify the assumption of proportional hazards. An alternative to the PH models with more relaxed conditions are Accelerated Failure Time models. These models are fairly commonly used in the field of manufacturing, but they are more and more frequent for modeling clinical trial data. They focus on the direct effect of the explanatory variables on the survival function allowing an easier interpretation of the effect of the corresponding covariates on the survival time.
