OBJECTIVE: A novel hypothesis of object recognition asserts that multiple regions are engaged in processing an object type, and that cerebral regions participate in processing multiple types of objects. In particular, for high-level expert processing, it proposes shared rather than dedicated resources for word and face perception, and predicts that prosopagnosic subjects would have minor deficits in visual word processing, and alexic subjects would have subtle impairments in face perception. In this study, we evaluated whether prosopagnosic subjects had deficits in processing either the word c

Acquired prosopagnosia is usually associated with bilateral or right-sided lesions of the occipital or temporal lobes. In rare cases of prosopagnosia after left-sided lesions in left-handed subjects, it is attributed to a reversed hemispheric specialization for face processing. This study examines the face-processing functions of a left-handed prosopagnosic patient with a left-sided lesion affecting the region of the occipital face area and possibly the fusiform face area, to contrast his deficits with those of prosopagnosic patients with right-hemispheric lesions. Similar to those patients, h

The ability to recognize individual faces is of crucial social importance for humans and evolutionarily necessary for survival. Consequently, faces may be "special" stimuli, for which we have developed unique modular perceptual and recognition processes. Some of the strongest evidence for face processing being modular comes from cases of prosopagnosia, where patients are unable to recognize faces whilst retaining the ability to recognize other objects. Here we present the case of an acquired prosopagnosic whose poor recognition was linked to a perceptual impairment in face processing. Despite

RP is a case of "developmental" prosopagnosia who, according to brain-imaging segmentation data, shows reduction in volume of a limited set of structures of the right hemisphere. RP is as accurate as control subjects in tasks requiring the perception of nonface objects (e.g., matching subordinate labels to exemplars, naming two-tone images), with the exception of one perceptual task: The matching of different perspectives of amoebae-like stimuli (i.e., volumes made of a single smooth surface). In terms of speed ("efficiency") of responses, RP's performance falls clearly outside the normal limi

Prosopagnosia was due to a right occipito-temporal infarct, but clinical and computed tomographic features emphasized a previous symmetrical damage in the left side. The case reported, and especially elaboration of literature data relative to this peculiar type of visual agnosia, suggest that bilaterality of cerebral lesions in the determining factor of prosopagnosia.

Prosopagnosia, a spectacular face agnosia, is generally detected and discussed on the basis of explicit or overt performance of the subjects. However, recent observations suggest that an overt response is probably not sufficient to determine what is and what is not preserved in the cognitive processing of faces by prosopagnosia. Indeed, signs of covert knowledge have been evidenced in some, but not all, subjects, indicating that they are still able to use representations they cannot use overtly. Empirical data, showing that the nature of prosopagnosia is a more complex phenomenon than has been

To localize the lesions responsible for prosopagnosia one must first consider how recent anatomico-physiological data have modified our view of the visual system: the visual cortex has been parceled into a mosaic of visual areas, each of them processing preferentially a particular feature (form, colour, movement); there is evidence of a face area in the monkey temporal lobe, and a new model of the inferior longitudinal fasciculus has been offered. It is currently accepted that face recognition deficits are due to bilateral occipito-temporal lesions, but in view of several recent reports in whi

A patient with severe, lasting prosopagnosia could not get an immediate overview of a face sufficiently specific for successful identification. He also failed completely in tasks of visual closure despite adequate performances on numerous other tests of visual perception and memory. We conclude that prosopagnosia represents a loss of visual "configural processing"--a learned skill enabling immediate identification of individual members of a class without conscious visuospatial analysis or remembering. Prosopagnosia and agnosic alexia represent two distinct defects of configural processing: Ale

The "many-to-many" hypothesis proposes that visual object processing is supported by distributed circuits that overlap for different object categories. For faces and words the hypothesis posits that both posterior fusiform regions contribute to both face and visual word perception and predicts that unilateral lesions impairing one will affect the other. However, studies testing this hypothesis have produced mixed results. We evaluated visual word processing in subjects with developmental prosopagnosia, a condition linked to right posterior fusiform abnormalities. Ten developmental prosopagnosi

BACKGROUND: Developmental prosopagnosia is a disorder of face recognition that is believed to reflect impairments of visual mechanisms. However, voice recognition has rarely been evaluated in developmental prosopagnosia to clarify if it is modality-specific or part of a multi-modal person recognition syndrome.
OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to examine whether voice discrimination and/or recognition are impaired in subjects with developmental prosopagnosia.
DESIGN/METHODS: 73 healthy controls and 12 subjects with developmental prosopagnosia performed a match-to-sample test of voice discrimination an

OBJECTIVE: To determine the anatomic correlate of prosopagnosia in subjects with semantic dementia.
METHODS: We identified all subjects who had been evaluated by an experienced behavioral neurologist, met criteria for semantic dementia, and had completed a volumetric head MRI scan. In all subjects, historical records were reviewed and subjects in which the presence (n = 15) or absence (n = 12) of prosopagnosia was specifically ascertained by the neurologist were identified. Voxel-based morphometry was used to assess patterns of gray matter atrophy in subjects with and without prosopagnosia co

One of the most remarkable disorders following brain damage is prosopagnosia, the inability to recognize faces. While a number of cases of prosopagnosia have been described at the behavioral level, the functional neuroanatomy of this face recognition impairment, and thus the brain regions critically involved in normal face recognition, has never been specified in great detail. Here, we used anatomical and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to present the detailed functional neuroanatomy of a single case of acquired prosopagnosia (PS; Rossion, B., Caldara, R., Seghier, M., Schuller, A

BACKGROUND: There are many methods of testing covert face recognition in prosopagnosia, but it is not clear whether different types of covert recognition share a common mechanism.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether direct forced-choice techniques and indirect face-priming methods yielded similar behavioral estimates of covert ability in a series of prosopagnosic patients.
METHODS: The authors tested seven control subjects and seven prosopagnosic patients. Six patients had an apperceptive prosopagnosia: one with childhood onset, three with bilateral lesions, and two with unilateral occipitotempo

We investigated a male, aged 4 years 11 months, who fulfilled the criteria of Asperger syndrome). In addition to the typical pattern of autistic symptoms, psychological testing revealed prosopagnosia in tasks for face recognition and matching. Prosopagnosia was also present when he tried to identify the faces of his parents and himself in photographs whenever these were presented with photographs of other persons. Although impairment in reciprocal social interaction in individuals with Asperger syndrome is closely correlated to their impaired perceptional abilities in non-verbal communication,

BACKGROUND: Some patients with prosopagnosia have covert recognition, meaning that they retain some familiarity or knowledge of facial identity of which they are not aware.
OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that prosopagnosic patients with right occipitotemporal lesions and impaired face perception lack covert processing, whereas patients with associative prosopagnosia and bilateral anterior temporal lesions possess it.
METHODS: Eight patients with prosopagnosia were tested with a battery of four face recognition tests to determine their ability to discriminate between famous and unknown fac

Prosopagnosia is a rare neurological sign, characterized by disturbance of recognition of faces. It is important to remember that prosopagnosia can appear as a result of a brain injury, and as such may be a major disability to the patient. We report a case of a nine year old boy with prosopagnosia due to brain injury at the age of 18 months. The main injury was localized to the boy's left hemisphere, but his right hemisphere was probably also affected. Most post mortem examinations of patients suffering from prosopagnosia show bilateral or right-sided parietal, temporal and occipetal pathologi

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded from a 53-year-old man with prosopagnosia during presentation of slides of known and unknown faces and under two control conditions. ANOVA comparisons with a normal male group showed no differences in P100 amplitude, P300 amplitude or P300 latency. There were no significant evoked potential differences between the patient and controls specifically related to the face conditions. There was, however, a significant delay in the latency of P100 from both hemispheres during all types of stimuli. This prolonged latency was asymmetrical, showing a right s

A patient who suffered traumatic hematomas of both occipitotemporal regions, but who had normal visual acuity, language, and cognitive functions, could not recognize faces of family members, celebrities , or recent acquaintances (prosopagnosia). He could distinguish same from different faces when they were presented simultaneously, but could not recognize faces that had been presented to him 90 seconds earlier. He could read and name objects correctly, but could not recognize any previously viewed object if it was reexamined later with other objects of the same semantic class. He had no diffic

After bilateral cranial trauma a 20 year-old male patient presented severe prosopagnosia which regressed after five months before disappearing completely. Referring to this exceptional case of regressive prosopagnosia the authors discuss the influence of rehabilitation, and review the literature concerning this disorder. They stress its association with other neuropsychological deficiencies connected with right hemispheric lesions, such as topagnosia and disturbance of visual perception.

Phenomenology is the philosophical study of experience and its core feature of sentience, the very ability to be conscious of a sensation and how we perceive it. Nowhere is this idea more vivid, as in the phenomenon of vision and the ability to form and sense a visual percept. The clinical entity of prosopagnosia, the ability to sense but not recognize a face, strikes at the heart of this phenomenon. We describe a classic case of selective apperceptive prosopagnosia due to an ischemic infarct of the left occipital lobe with extension to the lingual gyrus. It is well-established that acquired p
