Protective Effect of Chickpea Protein Hydrolysates on Colon Carcinogenesis Associated With a Hypercaloric Diet.

OBJECTIVE: Colon cancer occupies the third place in incidence worldwide; eating habits, in particular, consumption of hypercaloric diets, are relevant in its etiopathogenesis. On the other hand, foods can also modulate carcinogenesis: for example, proteins, which when hydrolyzed release peptides with biological activities, and legumes, especially, chickpea, represent a good source of hydrolysates. The objective of this work was to verify the inhibitory effect of chickpea hydrolyzed protein on azoxymethane (AOM)-induced carcinogenesis in mice fed a hypercaloric diet. METHODS: We hydrolyzed chi

Preparation of liposome encapsulating angiotensin-I-converting enzyme inhibitory peptides from sunflower protein hydrolysates.

Liposomal angiotensin-I-converting enzyme inhibitory (ACEI) peptides were prepared from sunflower protein hydrolysates by the thin‑film ultrasonic method. Response surface methodology (RSM), in combination with fractional factorial designs and central composite design methods were utilized to optimize entrapment efficiency and balance the drug release. We found that the ratio of phospholipids to cholesterol, ultrasound time and the ratio of phospholipids to ACEI peptides were significant factors affecting entrapment efficiency (P<0.001). Optimal preparation conditions of liposomal‑ACEI peptide

Determination of residual 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol in protein hydrolysates by capillary gas chromatography.

This study describes a method for the quantitative determination of residual 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol in protein hydrolysates. The method is based on a continuous micro-steam distillation solvent extraction technique. The quantitative determination is performed by electron-capture gas chromatography using an "on column" injector and a fused silica capillary CP wax 52 CB column. The absolute detection limit for 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol in soy sauces is 10 pg and recoveries of 75.8% and 82.7% with a standard deviation of 4.0% and 2.5% are obtained for samples fortified in the range of 1 mg/kg and

The use of protein hydrolysate improves the protein intestinal absorption in undernourished mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni.

Patients residing in endemic areas for schistosomiasis in Brazil are usually undernourished and when they develop the hepatosplenic clinical form of the disease should usually receive hospital care, many of them being in need of nutritional rehabilitation before specific treatment can be undertaken. In the mouse model, investigations carried out in our laboratory detected a reduced aminoacid uptake in undernourished animals which is aggravated by a superimposed infection with Schistosoma mansoni. However, in well-nourished infected mice no dysfunction occurs. In this study, we tried to improve

Effects of rice protein hydrolysate on bone fracture properties in ovariectomized rats.

PURPOSE: Osteoporosis is a global health concern, particularly in developed countries with aging populations, where the incidence of postmenopausal osteoporosis is increasing. Various nutrients have been studied as potential interventions, and components derived from regionally familiar foods may enhance acceptability and adherence. In this study, we focused on rice, a staple food in Asia and Africa. Recent studies have suggested that rice-derived peptides may help prevent bone fragility. Therefore, we examined the effects of rice protein hydrolysate (RPH) on bone health in ovariectomized rats

Identification and quantification of ACE-inhibiting peptides in enzymatic hydrolysates of plant proteins.

Enzymatic hydrolysis of proteins from rice, soy, pea and wheat, with both chymotrypsin and thermolysin, resulted in hydrolysates, which are efficient inhibitors of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). IC50 values of the hydrolysates were between 27 and 39mg/l, which is comparable to enzymatically hydrolysed whey protein. A significant increase of the ACE-inhibiting effect was observed following butanol extraction due to accumulation of hydrophobic peptides (IC50 between 12 and 21mg/l). Based on the identification and quantification of individual tryptophan-, tyrosine- and phenylalanine-con

Hydrolysed wheat proteins present in cosmetics can induce immediate hypersensitivities.

Cosmetics containing hydrolysed wheat proteins (HWP) can induce rare but severe allergic reactions. 9 patients, all females without common wheat allergy, but with contact urticaria to such cosmetics, were studied. 6 of them also experienced generalized urticaria or anaphylaxis to foods containing HWP. All patients had low to moderate levels of immunoglobulin (Ig)E specific of wheat flour (f4) or gluten (f79). Their sensitivity to HWP and their tolerance to unmodified wheat proteins extracted from grains were confirmed using skin tests. Immunoblotting analyses showed that IgE from all patients

Bioactive and health-promoting properties of enzymatic hydrolysates of legume proteins: a review.

This study comprehensively reviewed the effect of controlled enzymatic hydrolysis on the bioactivity of pulse protein hydrolysates (PPHs). Proteolysis results in the partial structural unfolding of pulse proteins with an increase in buried hydrophobic groups of peptide sequences. The use of PPHs in a dose-dependent manner can enhance free radical scavenging and improve antioxidant activities regarding inhibition of lipid oxidation, ferric reducing power, metal ion chelation, and β-carotene bleaching inhibition. Ultrafiltered peptide fractions with low molecular weights imparted angiotensin-I c

Formulas containing hydrolysed protein for prevention of allergy and food intolerance in infants.

BACKGROUND: Allergies and food reactions are common and may be associated with foods including adapted cow's milk formula. Formulas containing hydrolysed proteins have been used to treat infants with allergy or food intolerance. However, it is unclear whether hydrolysed formula can be advocated for prevention of allergy and food intolerance in infants without evidence of allergy or food intolerance. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of feeding hydrolysed formulas on allergy and food intolerance in infants and children compared to adapted cow's milk or human breast milk. If hydrolysed formul

Identification, Screening and Mechanism Analysis of Anti-Parkinson's Disease Peptides from Rapana venosa Protein Hydrolysates.

At present, there is still a lack of effective treatments to slow the progression of Parkinson's disease. Naturally derived active substances, valued for their safety and multi-target potential, have become an important direction in anti-PD drug development, with marine organisms representing a valuable source of bioactive peptides. This study aimed to isolate and identify anti-PD peptides from Rapana venosa protein hydrolysates. Through bioactivity-guided screening combined with an MPTP-induced zebrafish PD model, three novel active peptides-KSTELLI, FLVKLPMFM, and SDSLSEILIS-were successfull

Antioxidant and ACE-Inhibitory Activity of Protein Hydrolysates Produced from Atlantic Sea Cucumber (Cucumaria frondosa).

Atlantic sea cucumber is a benthic marine echinoderm found in Northwest Atlantic waters and is harvested mainly for its body wall. The body wall, along with internal organs and aquaphyrangeal bulb/flower, is a rich source of proteins, where the latter parts are often considered as processing discards. The objective of this research was to produce protein hydrolysates from sea cucumber tissues (body wall, flower, and internal organs) with bioactive properties associated with antioxidants, DNA and LDL cholesterol oxidation inhibition, and angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory effects.
