BACKGROUND: Lymphangiomatosis is a multisystem disorder that is rarely localized to the gastrointestinal tract. Lymphangiomatosis usually has no specific clinical presentation and is easily misdiagnosed. A case report and review of the literature on lymphangiomatosis associated with protein-losing enteropathy will help to improve the overall understanding of this disease.
CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of lymphangiomatosis of the bowel and other solid organs. A 78-year-old man presented with recurrent bowel bleeding and protein-losing enteropathy, as well as cystic lesions in the spleen, live

Primary intestinal lymphangiectasia (PIL), also known as Waldmann's disease, is an exudative enteropathy resulting from morphologic abnormalities in the intestinal lymphatics. In this article, we describe a 12-year-old boy with PIL that led to protein-losing enteropathy characterized by diarrhea, hypoalbuminemia associated with edema (serum albumin level: 1.0 g/dL), and hypogammaglobulinemia (serum IgG level: 144 mg/dL). Severe hypoalbuminemia, electrolyte abnormalities, and tetany persisted despite a low-fat diet and propranolol. Everolimus (1.6 mg/m(2)/day) was added to his treatment as an a

BACKGROUND: Neonatal diabetes is a rare form of monogenic diabetes with onset in the first six months of life occurring in 1/100,000 to 1/400,000 births. Both permanent and transient forms have been described. Permanent neonatal diabetes results predominantly from mutations in the KCNJ11 and ABCC8 genes. Less frequently, mutations of the GATA6 gene, located on chromosome 18 cause a form of permanent neonatal diabetes resulting from pancreatic hypoplasia or agenesis. Other anomalies associated with mutations of this gene have also been reported, most commonly congenital heart disease.

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma usually arises from chronic inflammation. We herein report a case of small intestinal MALT lymphoma with protein-losing enteropathy (PLE). A 73-year-old woman presented with lower leg edema and severe hypoalbuminemia. She had a medical history of pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy with Billroth II reconstruction. Oral and anal route double-balloon enteroscopies revealed irregular nodular mucosal lesions with erosion extending from the jejunum to terminal ileum. Histopathological evaluation of the biopsied mucosa showed proliferation of

The case of a 52-year-old woman with a past history of thymoma resection who presented with chronic diarrhea and generalized edema is the focal point of this article. A diagnosis of Giardia lamblia infection was established, which was complicated by protein-losing enteropathy and severely low serum protein level in a patient with no urinary protein loss and normal liver function. After anti-helmintic treatment, there was recovery from hypoalbuminemia, though immunoglobulins persisted at low serum levels leading to the hypothesis of an immune system disorder. Good's syndrome is a rare cause of

Lupus protein-losing enteropathy (LUPLE) is a well reported but a rare manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The main objectives of this study are to raise awareness of LUPLE that can be easily missed by internist, rheumatologist, gastroenterologist and nephrologist, and then to be considered in any patient with unexplained edema, ascites, and hypoalbuminemia. A systematic review was performed with 112 patients who met the eligibility criteria and were critically appraised. The LUPLE was ultimately diagnosed by either Tc-(99m) albumin scintography ((99m)Tc-HAS) or fecal alpha-1-

The gastrointestinal manifestations of Henoch-Schönlein purpura include abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, intussusception, and perforation. Protein-losing enteropathy is rarely associated with Henoch-Schönlein purpura. Two pediatric patients with Henoch-Schönlein purpura who developed protein-losing enteropathy are reported. Tc-99m human serum albumin scintigraphy is useful in the detection of protein-losing enteropathy.

Gastrointestinal complications of Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia (WM) are unusual but often treatable. We report a case of WM associated with significant gastrointestinal involvement manifest as chronic diarrhea with protein-losing enteropathy and recurrent venous thromboses. Small bowel biopsy was negative for amyloidosis but revealed intestinal lymphangiectasia with deposition of monoclonal IgM. The patient was treated with cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and prednisone with rapid and complete resolution of the peripheral edema and diarrhea. We follow the case report with a retrospective analy

A 46-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with complaints of chronic diarrhoea, vomiting and severe muscle weakness. Clinical examination showed a lethargic, malnourished, dehydrated patient with ascites and bilateral leg oedema. Laboratory evaluation revealed mild normochromic normocytic anaemia and severe hypoproteinaemia with hypoalbuminaemia. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed a thickened, friable duodenal mucosa with multiple erosions. Colonoscopy revealed nodular, pseudopolypoid lesions with patchy erosions in the left hemicolon. A watermelon lesion involving the gastrointestinal tract other than the stomach has not been reported previously except for two cases with rectal involvement and another case with caecal involvement. This report describes a case of protein-losing enteropathy with endoscopic features of 'the watermelon lesion' involving nearly the entire colon. A 57-year-old man presented with a six-month history of generalized oedema and diarrhoea. Laboratory findings included elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and decreased serum total protein and albumin. Serum fluorescent anti-nuclear antibody, anti-ds

OBJECTIVE: To report the case of an unusual form of protein-losing enteropathy.
PATIENT: A 54-year-old patient with hypoechoic tumours resembling lipomas in the mesentery.
INTERVENTIONS: Following examination by ultrasound and computed tomography, the well-known intestinal and extra-intestinal forms of protein-losing enteropathy were excluded and a diagnostic laparotomy was performed. The whole mesentery was infiltrated by a large unresectable tumour. Histological examination showed that it was a sclerosing mesenteritis.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Steroid therapy dramatically improved the prote

A patient presenting with features suggestive of malabsorption syndrome is described who had florid intestinal schistosomiasis on peroral biopsy of the jejunum. Liver biopsy and rectal biopsy also revealed schistosomal ova. Biochemical studies revealed severe hypoproteinaemia and hypoalbuminaemia, caused by a protein losing enteropathy. This is the first reported case of protein losing enteropathy caused by intestinal schistosomiasis.

Faecal alpha 1 antitrypsin was measured in two groups of children with diarrhoea aged 6 months to 6 years during the acute and recovery stages of the illness. Group 1 comprised 19 children with a history of measles in the two weeks preceding admission to hospital. In this group there were six cases of Shigella species, six enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, and five rotavirus, and two did not yield an aetiologic agent. Group 2 comprised 15 children with diarrhoea only. In this group there were five cases of Shigella species, five enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, and five rotavirus. Children wi

Budd-Chiari syndrome associated with protein-losing enteropathy is reported. A 26-year-old male suffered from ascites, edema in the lower extremities, and engorgement of ascending veins on the abdominal wall. The diagnosis of Budd-Chiari syndrome was made by inferior vena cavography. The 131I-polyvinylpyrrolidone test showed the association of protein-losing enteropathy. The surgical operation was performed successfully, resulting in a marked improvement of signs and symptoms. To date, no similar case has yet been reported. There are, however, a number of reported cases of hypoproteinemia in B

This report documents a case of cystic lymphangiomyoma of the sigmoid colon in a 35-year-old woman who presented with symptoms of a protein-losing enteropathy. This case was unique in that it involved not only the colonic wall and mesentery but also extended into the retroperitoneum. Surgical excision of the affected segment has resulted in reversal of hypoproteinaemia and return to normal of the excessive faecal loss of 51Cr-labeled protein over a 2-year follow-up period.

Gastrointestinal protein loss and xylose and lactose absorption were both abnormal in underweight children with acute measles and diarrhoea. The protein loss was equivalent to a mean absolute albumin loss of 1.68 plus or minus 0.21 g/day, while the mean one-hour blood xylose level was 0.93 plus or minus 0.38 mmol/l (14.0 plus or minus 5.7 mg/100 ml) in the acute stage and 1.71 plus or minus 0.43 mmol/l (25.6 plus or minus 6.5 mg/100 ml) after recovery (P less than 0.01). Lactose intolerance was found in four children out of 17 tested. Thus faecal protein loss and malabsorption may contribute s

OBJECTIVES: Cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) is very frequent in infants. Presentation is variable, and symptoms fluctuate in intensity. Diagnosis can be challenging as it is mostly clinical. In severe cases, patients can present with anasarca secondary to protein-losing enteropathy (PLE). The exact mechanism underlying PLE is incompletely understood. Here we report four cases of severe PLE caused by CMPA warranting endoscopic workup in whom histological expression was characterized by variable features along the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
METHODS: We report four cases of severe CMPA with

A commercially available radial immunodiffusion assay was used to measure serum and faecal alpha 1-antitrypsin concentrations as well as alpha 1-antitrypsin clearance in 17 children with kwashiorkor, 11 children with marasmic kwashiorkor, 10 children with marasmus, and 16 normal children. Serum alpha 1-antitrypsin concentrations were significantly higher than normal in the marasmus and marasmic kwashiorkor groups, and significantly lower than normal in the kwashiorkor group. The intestinal clearance of alpha 1-antitrypsin was significantly higher than normal in the marasmus and marasmic kwashi

Lymphatic vessel dysplasia is associated with Fontan-associated protein-losing enteropathy. Extra nodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas including mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) are associated with lymphatic vessel dysplasia. Here, we describe the case of a 7-year-old with Fontan-associated protein-losing enteropathy who developed MALT lymphoma with a clinical course indicative of interaction between these pathologies and improvement in protein-losing enteropathy after MALT lymphoma treatment. This case suggests a pathophysiologic overlap which has implications for the management of Fo
