Co-infection with Proteus mirabilis and extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli aggravated liver injury in chickens by disrupting the jejunal barrier.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC), belong to extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC), causes colibacillosis in poultry, characterized by fibrinous inflammation of internal organs, high morbidity and mortality, economic losses, and food safety concerns. Proteus mirabilis is frequently isolated alongside APEC from diseased chickens, yet its role in colibacillosis remains unclear. As the intestinal lumen serves as a reservoir for both E. coli and P. mirabilis, it is possible that APEC triggers colibacillosis from the intestines, though this pathway has not been extensively studied. The emergence of multidrug-resistant Proteus vulgaris infection in cage reared Pangasianodon hypophthalmus: Molecular characterization and host-pathogen response.

The study investigates the causative agent responsible for massive mortality in Pangasianodon hypophthalmus cage farms. The infected pangasius were lethargic, not taking feed, and had exophthalmia, deep ulceration, and hemorrhage on the ventral body surface. Pathogens were isolated from infected pangasius tissue samples, and the strain was preliminarily identified as Proteus vulgaris based on morphology, biochemical tests, 16S rRNA PCR sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis. The microbiological analysis revealed that P. vulgaris was associated with the disease outbreak and mortality of P. hypop

Studies of introital colonization in women with recurrent urinary infections. X. Adhesive properties of Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis: lack of correlation with urinary pathogenicity.

The ability of a bacterial strain to adhere to the vaginal mucosa and the mucosa of the urinary conduits seems to be important in the pathogenesis of urinary infection. Bacterial adherence to vaginal epithelial cells was measured in vitro for 37 strains of Escherichia coli and 18 strains of Proteus mirabilis isolated from the anus, bladder and renal pelvis. No correlation could be demonstrated between the adhesive properties of a bacterial strain and its clinical pathogenicity, suggesting that host factors determining bacterial adherence are more important than bacterial adhesive factors in de

Combined Application of Aminoglycosides and Ascorbic Acid in the Elimination of Proteus mirabilis Rods Responsible for Causing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTIs)-A Molecular Approach.

Proteus mirabilis is a common cause of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). In this study, we verified the effectiveness of amikacin or gentamicin and ascorbic acid (AA) co-therapy in eliminating uropathogenic cells, as well as searched for the molecular basis of AA activity by applying chromatographic and fluorescent techniques. Under simulated physiological conditions, a combined activity of the antibiotic and AA supported the growth (threefold) of the P. mirabilis C12 strain, but reduced catheter colonization (≤30%) in comparison to the drug monotherapy. Slight modificatio

Atypical compartment syndrome of the forearm due to mixed infection with Proteus mirabilis and Morganella morganii after a penetrating injury: A limb-saving approach.

Compartment syndrome is a well-described clinical condition and is considered an orthopedic emergency affecting individuals of all ages. A typical scenario for acute compartment syndrome involves lower limb fractures or crush injuries. However, physicians may occasionally encounter atypical presentations, defined as atypical compartment syndrome (ACS). A 38-year-old, left-handed male patient without any comorbidities developed ACS of the forearm and clinical presentation of sepsis after a small penetrating injury to his right forearm. He developed ACS secondary to infected hematoma and subsequ

A Novel Therapeutic Approach: Phage and Alhagi maurorum Synergy Against Kidney and Bladder Infection Caused by Proteus mirabilis in BALB/c Mice.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) caused by Proteus mirabilis biofilms present significant challenges due to escalating multidrug resistance, highlighting the urgent need for alternative therapeutic strategies. This study evaluates a novel combinatorial approach employing a cocktail of two lytic bacteriophages (Isf-Pm1 and Isf-Pm2) in conjunction with Alhagi maurorum ethanolic extract (AME) to reduce bacterial burden in an established murine model of catheter-associated infection. We hypothesized that the synergistic activity of phages and AME would enhance treatment effica

Catalase Activity is Critical for Proteus mirabilis Biofilm Development, Extracellular Polymeric Substance Composition, and Dissemination during Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection.

Proteus mirabilis is a leading uropathogen of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), which are among the most common health care-associated infections worldwide. A key factor that contributes to P. mirabilis pathogenesis and persistence during CAUTI is the formation of catheter biofilms, which provide increased resistance to antibiotic treatment and host defense mechanisms. Another factor that is important for bacterial persistence during CAUTI is the ability to resist reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as through the action of the catalase enzyme. Potent catalase activity is

When the meningitis-encephalitis panel is negative: off-label joint infection PCR detects CTX-M ESBL-producing Proteus mirabilis in adult meningoencephalitis.

Spontaneous Gram-negative bacillary meningitis in adults is rare and carries high mortality, particularly in elderly patients with significant comorbidities. Although multiplex meningitis-encephalitis (ME) panels have improved diagnostic turnaround time, their limited pathogen spectrum may reduce sensitivity for certain clinically relevant Gram-negative organisms. We report a 78-year-old man presenting with acute meningoencephalitis, septic deterioration, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings strongly suggestive of bacterial infection. Despite marked neutrophilic pleocytosis and elevated prot

Proteus mirabilis flagella and MR/P fimbriae: isolation, purification, N-terminal analysis, and serum antibody response following experimental urinary tract infection.

Urinary tract infection with Proteus mirabilis may lead to serious complications, including cystitis, acute pyelonephritis, fever, bacteremia, and death. In addition to the production of hemolysin and the enzyme urease, fimbriae and flagellum-mediated motility have been postulated as virulence factors for this species. We purified mannose-resistant/proteuslike (MR/P) fimbriae and flagella from strains CFT322 and HU2450, respectively. Electron microscopy revealed highly concentrated preparations of fimbriae and flagella. Fimbrial and flagellar structural subunits were estimated by sodium dodecy
