Transplant infectious disease : an official journal of the Transplantation Society2014eng
Prototheca species are achlorophyllus algae. Prototheca wickerhamii and Prototheca zopfii cause human disease. In immunocompetent individuals, they cause soft tissue infections and olecranon bursitis, but in transplant recipients, these organisms can cause disseminated disease. We report a fatal case of disseminated P. zopfii infection in an hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipient with bloodstream infection and involvement of multiple soft tissue sites. We review all previous cases of protothecosis in HSCT reported in the literature. Protothecosis is uncommon after HSCT, but has a

BACKGROUND: Protothecosis is a rare infection in humans and animals caused by the achlorophyllic algae Prototheca species. More than half of the protothecosis cases are cutaneous infections, and most cases are observed in immunocompromised individuals.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of Prototheca wickerhamii infection in the mucosa of the pharynx in a 53-year-old immunocompetent woman with an incidentally found mass lesion at the left tongue base. Histopathological findings of the mass lesion suggested cryptococcosis, but P. wickerhamii was identified from the oropharynx scrape culture b

Prototheca wickerhamii has been predominantly recognised as a pathogen in immunocompromised hosts with deficits in innate or cellular immunity. The role of specific immunoglobulin against Prototheca in host immunity is uncertain. We describe a case of persistent cutaneous protothecosis in a patient with hypogammaglobulinemia most likely due to common variable immunodeficiency, with clinical response to voriconazole.

The present report describes a case of onychoprotothecosis caused by Prototheca wickerhamii in a nonimmunocompromized female. Dermatological examination showed yellowish discoloration of the left and right forefinger nails, showing onicolysis and hyperkeratosis. The repeated isolation of the algae Prototheca (organisms morula-like) as well as the repeated culture in media, Sabouraud agar, confirmed the diagnosis. The patient was successfully treated with tioconazol 1% topic solution. The aim of this paper was to present a rare condition.

Protothecosis are uncommon infections caused by Prototheca, considered to be achlorophylous algae. Nearly 80 human cases are reported in the literature since the first case described by Davies and Wakelin in 1964 in Sierra Leone (11). The disease have been identified in Europe, Asia (Japan, Thailand, China), Oceania and in the United States with 40 cases, particularly in the Southeast. Clinically, three clinical manifestations can be observed: 1) cutaneous lesions: papules, plaques or eczematoid, papulo-nodular areas of the extremities, 2) olecranon bursitis which occurred in 25% of cases, 3)

Human protothecosis is a rare infection caused by algae of the genus Prototheca. Prototheca wickerhamii has been recognized as the main species that causes infection in immunocompromised hosts with deficits in innate or cellular immunity. We report a case of persisting subcutaneous protothecosis in a patient with T-cell large granular lymphocyte leukemia, who also presented a history of disseminated histoplasmosis.

There is a growing body of research on the infection of cow milk by Prototheca algae, a potential human pathogen. This study presents investigations on plasma treatment to inactivate Prototheca directly in milk. However, microbiological tests revealed a surprisingly high survival rate of Prototheca in milk compared to saline solution treated under the same conditions. This phenomenon appears to be due to presence of proteins that act as scavengers of plasma reactive species, with OH• radicals playing a major role. Studies using MALDI-TOF MS, FTIR, XPS and UV-VIS on a model solution of peptone

Protothecosis is a rare disease caused by achlorophilic algae of the genus Prototheca spp. In general, three clinical forms are observed: cutaneous, articular and systemic. The cutaneous form is the most common one. This study describes a patient with isolated erythematous papules and erythematous papular plaques in the scapular regions, with a previous histopathological diagnosis of cryptococcosis. New tests were conclusive for the diagnosis of protothecosis, caused by Prototheca wickerhamii.

Cutaneous protothecosis is a rare infection caused by achlorophyllic algae of the genus Prototheca. The lesions usually occur on exposed areas, related with trauma, in immunocompromised patients. The most common clinical presentation is a vesicobullous and ulcerative lesion with pustules and scabs, simulating bacterial, fungal or herpetic infections or eczema. The diagnosis is determined by agent identification through histopathology, culture and the carbohydrates assimilation test. The finding of morula-like spherules is characteristic of Prototheca sp. Its rarity and non-specific clinical as

Protothecosis, a rare opportunistic infection caused by Prototheca species, achlorophyllous microalgae, is increasingly recognized but remains underdiagnosed due to its rarity and nonspecific clinical presentation. We report two cases of human protothecosis in Vietnam, occurring in a 63-year-old and 81-year-old female presenting with chronic, painful, ulcerative lesions on upper extremities. Despite initial misdiagnosis and empirical antifungal and antibacterial treatments, histopathological examination revealed characteristic Prototheca sporangia, leading to the definitive diagnosis. These ca

Solid organ transplantation is an accepted therapy for end-stage diseases of the kidneys, liver, heart, and lungs. Unfortunately, transplantation is associated with infectious complications. Here, we present a case report of Prototheca wickerhamii olecranon bursitis and review all of the cases in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients published in the literature to date. In our patient, the infection resolved with surgical therapy and limited antifungal therapy, and no symptoms have recurred over 24 months of follow-up. A review of the literature suggests that 50% of SOT recipients with Proto

A 5-year-old female spayed Shetland Sheepdog Mix dog was evaluated for a history of recent seizure activity, progressive hind limb ataxia, polyuria, and polydipsia and no history of gastrointestinal signs. Physical examination findings included conscious proprioceptive deficits, ataxia, and anterior uveitis along with a hypermature cataract in the right eye. Results of a CBC, serum biochemical profile, urinalysis, and computed tomography scan of the brain were unremarkable. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed marked eosinophilic pleocytosis and rare organisms consistent with Prototheca

We report a case of human protothecosis in an immunocompromised host which was caused by Prototheca wickerhamii and was successfully treated with thermal adjunct therapy combined with systemic itraconazole therapy. A 78-year-old man taking 30 mg prednisolone daily had a 1-week history of erythematous plaques on the dorsal aspect of his right hand and forearm after sustaining a small traumatic injury. Histopathology of the lesions revealed granulomatous inflammatory changes with numerous microorganisms that had multiple septations in their cytoplasm. On the basis of mycological features and the

Antibacterial activity of bovine lactoferrin hydrolysates (LFH) on microorganisms isolated from bovine mastitis, and superoxide (O(2)(-)) production of bovine neutrophils were evaluated. Antibacterial effects of LFH were measured in vitro against Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, Streptococci, Enterococci, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, yeast-like fungi and Prototheca zopfii isolated from clinical cases of bovine mastitis. To compare susceptibilities against LFH, minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values were determined by a micro-plate assay method. Most o

A 10-month-old male Rhodesian Ridgeback was presented to the Clinic of Small Animal Medicine, LMU, Germany, with a 6-month history of chronic diarrhea and hematochezia. The dog lived in Germany and had never traveled abroad. Complete blood count and serum biochemistry performed by the referring veterinarian revealed neutrophilia, hyperkalemia, and hyponatremia, with a basal cortisol of 4.3 µg/dl, which excluded hypoadrenocorticism. Since antibiotic treatment had not resulted in any improvement, a 2 week course of prednisolone administration had been initiated, leading to a marked deterioration
