Drought severely limits the growth and productivity of sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.), a fruit crop highly sensitive to water deficit. Beneficial root-associated fungi, particularly dark septate endophytes (DSEs), have emerged as potential modulators of stress tolerance, yet their underlying mechanisms in perennial fruit trees remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of the DSE fungus Helotiales sp. S16 on drought responses of sweet cherry rootstock Gisela 5 seedlings. Fungal symbiosis was established by homogenizing fungal suspension with sterile growth substrate,

This study systematically investigated the differential impacts of five commercial yeast strains on the chemical fingerprint and sensory attributes of cherry wine through integrating multiomics flavor analysis and sensory evaluation. During fermentation, total sugar content decreased from 220 g/L to 4.8-5.3 g/L, resulting in an ethanol concentration of around 11.0% (v/v). Cherry wine fermented with SIHA7 yeast exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity, whereas 71B yeast was particularly effective in reducing malic acid levels. This strain also showed an association with higher lactic acid con

Early and accurate detection of 'Candidatus Phytoplasma pruni' is essential for the control of X-disease in Prunus species, but this is made difficult by pathogen biology and the ability to consistently recover nucleic acids, both of which increase the likelihood of false negatives. Here we examined the latter, using high- and low-titer infected sweet cherry (P. avium) samples to compare three tissue disruption methods, four nucleic acid extraction chemistries, and four PCR chemistries. Results showed that method selection had minimal impact on high-titer samples but significantly affected low

While sweet cherries (Prunus avium L.) are globally recognized for their numerous potential health benefits, yet limited data exist on New Zealand-grown cultivars. This study examined the nutritional and bioactive profiles of six commercial cultivars-Kordia®, 'Lapins', Sweetheart®, Staccato®, 'Bing', and 'Rainier'-in both fresh and processed (washed and packaged) forms. All cultivars contained notable levels of minerals, phenolics, and essential nutrients. Fresh cherries had higher mineral content (0.3-0.5 g/100 g) than processed ones (0.2-0.3 g/100 g). Carbohydrates ranged from 16.8 to 18.6 g

Functional ingredient bioaccessibility is limited by instability and low solubility, thus, edible macromolecules are used to enhance delivery. This study presents a safe, sustainable method to prepare dual-network emulsion gel (CSEG). The gel is formed via Ca2+-induced crosslinking of sodium alginate (SA) and coffee cherry-derived polysaccharide (CCP) to enhance bioavailability. CCP and SA form a stable bimolecular network through hydrogen bonds and calcium ion coordination, improving gel stability. The effects of CCP/SA ratios on CSEG properties and curcumin delivery are also investigated. At

OBJECTIVES: Symptoms of insomnia are highly prevalent in the elderly. A significant number of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions exist, but, up-to-date, their comparative efficacy and safety has not been sufficiently assessed.
METHODS: We integrated the randomized evidence from every available treatment for insomnia in the elderly (>65 years) by performing a network meta-analysis. Several electronic databases were searched up to May 25, 2019. The two primary outcomes were total sleep time and sleep quality. Data for other 6 efficacy and 8 safety outcomes were also analyzed.

Salmonella Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is a persistent challenge within the poultry industry. The silent colonization allows S. Enteritidis establish themselves in the gut and reproductive tract, leading to persist, spread, and contaminate eggs and meat. This study investigated the anti-virulence potential of a sweet cherry pomace extract (CPE) as a potential natural decontaminant to disrupt S. Enteritidis colonization. The total phenolic content (TPC) and composition of ethanolic extracts from CPE were investigated via HPLC. Antimicrobial activities of CPE were evaluated by minimal inhibitor

Evidence suggests that obesity adversely affects brain function. High body mass index, hypertension, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and diabetes are risk factors for increasing cognitive decline. Tart cherries (PrunusCerasus L.) are rich in anthocyanins and components that modify lipid metabolism. This study evaluated the effects of tart cherries on the brain in diet-induced obese (DIO) rats. DIO rats were fed with a high-fat diet alone or in association with a tart cherry seeds powder (DS) and juice (DJS). DIO rats were compared to rats fed with a standard diet (CHOW). Background: Consumption of fruits of different origins with specific (poly)phenolic profiles can modulate the gene expression of enzymes and the levels of metabolites in a photoperiod-dependent manner. However, there is little information on how this affects the profile of hepatic and muscular fatty acids (FAs) and how it interferes with metabolic pathways. This study aimed to determine whether consuming local or non-local cherries alters liver and muscle FA profiles under different photoperiods, and to identify the associated changes in metabolic gene expression and serum metabolites. INTRODUCTION: Montmorency cherry concentrate (MCC) supplementation enhances functional recovery from exercise, potentially due to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. However, to date, supporting empirical evidence for these mechanistic hypotheses is reliant on indirect blood biomarkers. This study is the first to investigate functional recovery from exercise alongside molecular changes within the exercised muscle after MCC supplementation.
METHODS: Ten participants completed two maximal unilateral eccentric knee extension trials after MCC or placebo (PLA) supplementation for 7 d before

Four sweet cherry cultivars (FuChen, Redlight, Huangmi, and Samituo) grown in northern China were used to produce sweet cherry wines with two alcohol levels. Physicochemical properties, antioxidant capacity, and volatile aroma compounds of the wines were systematically investigated. The results showed that wine from the Redlight cultivar with an alcohol content of 11.22 ± 0.17% contained the highest phenolic content and also exhibited the strongest antioxidant capacity as measured by DPPH and ABTS•+ assays. Meanwhile, wine from the FuChen cultivar with an alcohol content of 11.45 ± 0.03% had t

BACKGROUND: Drosophila suzukii is a major pest of cherry in the western United States. We evaluated whether the addition of sugary baits could improve the efficacy of two classes of insecticides not considered to be sufficiently effective for this pest, diamides and spinosyns, in laboratory and field trials in cherry.
RESULTS: Adding cane sugar alone or in combination with the yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Aureobasidium pullulans significantly improved insecticide efficacy. However, the significance of adding yeasts to the sugar plus insecticide on fly mortality varied with respect to bo

Newer organic options for protecting fruit from tephritid fruit fly attack are needed to reduce extensive insecticide use. Here, we evaluated organic, food-grade hydrophobic coatings that help protect sweet cherries (Prunus avium L.) from water-induced cracking for suppressing attack on cherries by western cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis indifferens Curran (Diptera: Tephtitidae), as well as for their effects on fly mortality. Three formulations of coatings called HydroShield 13.20, 13.22, and 13.28 that form invisible elastic barriers on cherries and that consist of complex carbohydrates, fatty a

Translocation of elite cultivars across distinct climatic regions often induces transplantation shock. Although the rhizosphere microbiome can facilitate host acclimation, the underlying functional mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated microbiome-mediated adaptation in "Hongdeng" sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) moved from a humid coastal region (Dalian, DL) to a semi-arid inland habitat (Hohhot, HS). We integrated plant physiological assays, metagenomic sequencing, and structural equation modeling (SEM) to compare the source population (DL), the introduced population (HS), and a loca

This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of sour cherry seed oils, including samples obtained by Soxhlet extraction and maceration, as well as ten commercial samples. The results demonstrated that the 15-lipoxygenase inhibitory activity of the oil samples ranged from 6% to 80%. Regarding cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibition, while most samples showed negligible activity, the oil produced by Soxhlet extraction inhibited COX-1 and COX-2 by 38% and 32%, respectively. Similarly, the oil obtained via maceration showed inhibition rates of 25% and 23% for COX-1 and COX-2, respe
