This study aimed to investigate melanosis, quality attributes, and bacterial growth of freeze-chilled Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) during 6 days of chilled storage, as well as the preservative effects of tea polyphenol on shrimp. The results showed that freeze-chilled storage retarded the growth of bacteria and the accumulation of putrescine in shrimp. The growth of spoilage bacteria Photobacterium and Shewanella were inhibited. However, freeze-chilled storage aggravated melanosis and lipid oxidation. The total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) slightly accumulated in the thawed s

Pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent L-arginine oxidases (PDAOs) catalyze 4-electron oxidations of L-arginine in the context of secondary metabolite biosynthesis. PDAOs are separated into two classes based on whether they hydroxylate or desaturate L-arginine. A detailed mechanistic understanding of these enzymes will extend our knowledge of natural products biosynthesis. Here, we present detailed transient kinetic analyses of representative hydroxylating and desaturating PDAOs: MppP from Streptomyces wadayamensis (SwMppP) and the Ind4 homolog from Pseudoalteromonas luteoviolacea (Plu4). A basic understanding of abundance and diversity of antibiotic-resistant microbes and their genetic determinants is necessary for finding a way to prevent and control the spread of antibiotic resistance. For this purpose, chloramphenicol and multiple antibiotic-resistant bacteria were screened from a mariculture farm in northern China. Both sea cucumber and sea urchin rearing ponds were populated with abundant antibiotic-resistant bacteria, especially marine vibrios. Sixty-five percent chloramphenicol-resistant isolates from sea cucumber harbored a cat gene, either cat IV or cat II, whereas 35

Small cold shock proteins from bacteria are model proteins for many biophysical studies as a result of their small size and compact folding. Here we report a stability study of these proteins from the Antarctic psychrophile Pseudoalteromonas haloplanktis, the mesophile Escherichia coli and the hyperthermophile Thermotoga maritima. When analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, the three proteins unfolded fully reversibly according to a perfect two-state model, which are strict prerequisites to apply equilibrium thermodynamic equations. The parameters obtained by differential scanning calo

Enzymes from psychrophiles catalyze the reactions at low temperatures with higher specific activity. Among all the psychrophilic enzymes produced, cold active β-galactosidase from marine psychrophiles revalorizes a new arena in numerous areas at industrial level. The hydrolysis of lactose in to glucose and galactose by cold active β-galactosidase offers a new promising approach in removal of lactose from milk to overcome the problem of lactose intolerance. Herein we propose, a 3D structure of cold active β-galactosidase enzyme sourced from Pseudoalteromonas haloplanktis by using Modeler 9v8 an

Offshore waters have a high incidence of oil pollution, which poses an elevated risk of ecological damage. The microbial community composition and metabolic mechanisms influenced by petroleum hydrocarbons vary across different marine regions. However, research on metabolic strategies for in-situ petroleum degradation and pollution adaptation remains in its nascent stages. This study combines metagenomic techniques with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The data show that the genera Pseudoalteromonas, Hellea, Lentisphaera, and Polaribacter exhibit significant oil-degradatio

Fermentative production of bio-hydrogen (bio-H2) from organic residues has emerged as a promising alternative for providing the required electron source for hydrogen driven remediation strategies. Unlike the widely used production of H2 by bacteria in fresh water systems, few reports are available regarding the generation of biogenic H2 and optimisation processes in marine systems. The present research aims to optimise the capability of an indigenous marine bacterium for the production of bio-H2 in marine environments and subsequently develop this process for hydrogen driven remediation strate

We present a wirelessly powered ultraviolet-C (UVC) radiation-based disinfecting bandage for sterilization and treatment in chronic wound care and management. The bandage contains embedded low-power UV light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in the 265 to 285 nm range with the light emission controlled via a microcontroller. An inductive coil is seamlessly concealed in the fabric bandage and coupled with a rectifier circuit to enable 6.78 MHz wireless power transfer (WPT). The maximum WPT efficiency of the coils is 83% in free space and 75% on the body at a coupling distance of 4.5 cm. Measurements show

Lignin, a characteristic component of terrestrial plants. Rivers transport large amounts of vascular plant organic matter into the oceans where lignin can degrade over time; however, microorganisms involved in this degradation have not been identified. In this study, several bacterial strains were isolated from marine samples using the lignin-derived compound vanillic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid) as the sole carbon and energy source. The optimum growth temperature for all isolates ranged from 30 to 35°C. All isolates grew well in a wide NaCl concentration range of 0 to over 50 g/L, w

Ice-ice disease (IID) is widely associated with environmental stress and microbial presence in seaweed farms, but its expression under ex situ conditions remains poorly understood. This study examined the associated culturable bacterial community in independently maintained Kappaphycus alvarezii stock cultures classified as healthy or diseased based on characteristic symptoms. Bacteria were isolated from healthy tissue, diseased tissue, and their corresponding bulk waters, identified using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and analyzed through phylogenetic reconstruction, species richness estimation,

Here we report the oil degradation genetic potential of six oil-degrading bacteria (ODB), previously used as a bioremediation consortium, isolated from the hydrocoral Millepora alcicornis and seawater. The strains were identified as Halomonas sp. (LC_1), Cobetia sp. (LC_6), Pseudoalteromonas shioyasakiensis (LC_2), Halopseudomonas aestusnigri (LC_3), Shewanella algae (LC_4), and Brucella intermedia (LC_5). The taxonomic identification differed from that of the original paper when we used whole genome gene markers instead of just 16S rRNA gene. Genes responsible for the degradation of aromatic

Investigations on the ability of bacteria to enhance removal of hydrocarbons and reduce heavy metal toxicity in sediments are necessary to design more effective bioremediation strategies. In this study, five bacterial strains, Halomonas sp. SZN1, Alcanivorax sp. SZN2, Pseudoalteromonas sp. SZN3, Epibacterium sp. SZN4, and Virgibacillus sp. SZN7, were isolated from polluted sediments from an abandoned industrial site in the Gulf of Naples, Mediterranean Sea, and tested for their bioremediation efficiency on sediment samples collected from the same site. These bacteria were added as consortia or

Temperate estuary wetlands act as natural filters for microbiological contamination and have a profound impact on "One Health." However, knowledge of microbiological ecology security across the different habitats in temperate estuarine wetlands remains limited. This study employed meta-analysis to explore the characteristics of bacterial communities, potential pathogens, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) across three heterogeneous habitats (water, soil, and sediment) within the Liaohe Estuary landscape. The diversity and composition of the three bacterial communities differed with biogeog

BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas aeruginosa forms antibiotic-resistant biofilms that are responsible for the treatment failure or relapses of the bacterial infections in the lungs of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The alginate lyases that target extracellular polysaccharide alginate of P. aeruginosa biofilms are promising therapeutic candidates for treatment of P. aeruginosa biofilm infections.
METHODS: Immunofluorescent staining and thin layer chromatography were used to demonstrate the alginolytic activity of the alginate lyase enzyme (AlyP1400) purified from a marine Pseudoalteromonas bacteriu

The effects of bacterial biofilms (BFs) on larval settlement and metamorphosis of the mussel, Mytilus coruscus, were investigated in the laboratory. Of nine different isolates, Shewanella sp.1 BF induced the highest percentage of larval settlement and metamorphosis, whereas seven other isolates had a moderate inducing activity and one isolate, Pseudoalteromonas sp. 4, had a no inducing activity. The inducing activity of individual bacterial isolates was not correlated either with their phylogenetic relationship or with the surfaces from which they were isolated. Among the eight bacterial speci

The increase in antibiotic-resistant pathogens has prompted the search for alternative therapies. One such alternative is the use of probiotic microorganisms. However, growing interest is now turning toward postbiotics-non-viable microbial cells and/or their components or metabolites-that can confer health benefits without the risks associated with administering live microbes. Marine ecosystems, characterized by extreme and diverse environmental conditions, are a promising yet underexplored source of microorganisms capable of producing unique postbiotic compounds. These include bioactive pepti

Diesel is frequently encountered in coastal ecosystems due to land run-off from road surfaces. The current study investigates how partially weathered diesel at environmentally relevant concentrations, as may be seen during a run-off event, affect coastal microbial communities. A mesocosm experiment using seawater from the Bedford Basin, Nova Scotia, was followed for 72 h after the addition of partially weathered diesel. Sequencing data suggests partially weathered diesel acts quickly to alter the prokaryotic community, as both opportunistic (Vibrio and Lentibacter) and oil-degrading (Colwellia

This study examines the occurrence of bacteria resistant to antibiotics and heavy metals in Terra Nova Bay, a coastal area of the Ross Sea in Antarctica that is increasingly recognised as vulnerable to human influence. During the 37th Italian Antarctic Expedition (2021-2022), researchers collected seawater, sediment, and fish samples from the notothenioid species Trematomus bernacchii to evaluate microbial resistance in an environment once considered largely pristine. Fifty heterotrophic bacterial isolates were obtained and tested against twenty-eight antibiotics, revealing a notable presence

The freshwater snail Cipangopaludina lecythis holds both ecological and medicinal importance, yet its microbiome remains unexplored. This study presents the first shotgun metagenomic profiling of edible tissues of C. lecythis. Illumina HiSeq sequencing generated over 42 million high-quality reads, revealing 38 bacterial phyla dominated by Pseudomonadota (32%), followed by Bacillota and Actinomycetota. At the genus level, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, Bacillus, Clostridium, Staphylococcus, and Streptomyces were prevalent. Functionally important genera such as Aeromonas, Vibrio, and Ps
