Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a leading cause of nosocomial infections, including pneumonia and urinary tract infections, and the primary cause of morbidity and mortality in cystic fibrosis patients. The emergence of multidrug-resistant strains makes these infections life-threatening. To overcome this challenge, lysocins can be employed as novel antipseudomonals. Lysocins use components of the pyocin antimicrobial system to deliver bacteriophage lysins to their peptidoglycan substrate in Pseudomonas. Peptidoglycan cleavage causes membrane destabilization, cytoplasmic leakage, and disruption of the

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that is responsible for infections in people living with chronic respiratory conditions, such as cystic fibrosis (CF) and non-CF bronchiectasis (NCFB). Traditionally, in people with chronic respiratory disorders, P. aeruginosa infection has been managed with a combination of inhaled and intravenous antibiotic therapies. However, due in part to the prolonged use of antibiotics in these people, the emergence of multi-drug resistant P. aeruginosa strains is a growing concern. The development of anti-virulence therapeutics may provide a new means

Multidrug-resistant (MDR)/extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa is emerging as a major threat related to adverse patient outcomes. The goal of this review is to describe evidence-based empiric and targeted treatment regimens that can be exploited when dealing with suspected or confirmed infections due to MDR/XDR P. aeruginosa. P. aeruginosa has inherent resistance to many drug classes, the capacity to form biofilms, and most importantly, the ability to quickly acquire resistance to ongoing treatments. Based on the presence of risk factors for MDR/XDR infections and local epid

Whole cell vaccines are complex mixtures of antigens, immunogens, and sometimes adjuvants that can trigger potent and protective immune responses. In some instances, such as whole cell Bordetella pertussis vaccination, the immune response to vaccination extends beyond the pathogen the vaccine was intended for and contributes to protection against other clinically significant pathogens. In this study, we describe how B. pertussis whole cell vaccination protects mice against acute pneumonia caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Using ELISA and western blot, we identified that B. pertussis whole cell

BACKGROUND: Meningitis and spinal infections with Gram-negative bacteria after local injections for treatment of chronic back pain are rare. This study investigated an outbreak of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections following computed tomography (CT)-guided spinal injections (SI).
METHODS: A case was defined as a spinal infection or meningitis with P. aeruginosa after SI between 10th January and 1st March 2019 in the same outpatient clinic. Patients without microbiological evidence of P. aeruginosa but with a favourable response to antimicrobial therapy active against P. aeruginosa were defined

BACKGROUND: Patients with Charcot arthropathy present a high risk for ulcers with secondary bone infection. Infections with Pseudomonas aeruginosa represent a severe threat to the patients. We hypothesized that infections with P aeruginosa result in a longer stay in hospital and more operations than infections with other bacteria.
METHODS: All patients who underwent surgery for Charcot arthropathy of the feet between 1996 and 2006 (n = 205) in our clinic were included. The duration of hospitalization and number of surgeries for infections due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MR

Chronic infection of the airways with Pseudomonas aeruginosa represents a therapeutic challenge. Currently existing approaches are particularly based on systemic approaches and this increases the risk of strain resistance selection and is frequently associated with side effects. Therefore, local delivery of antibiotics may reduce these risks and may provide sustained sterilization of the respiratory tract. In fact, this approach was found to be effective with inhaled tobramycin in cystic fibrosis. Inhaled ciprofloxacin (dry powder inhaled formulation or liposomal inhaled formulation) is curren

Pseudomonas aeruginosa chronic lung infections are the major cause of morbidity and mortality associated with cystic fibrosis. For many years, the consensus was that cystic fibrosis patients acquire P. aeruginosa from the environment, and hence harbour their own individual clones. However, in the past 15 yrs the emergence of transmissible strains, in some cases associated with greater morbidity and increased antimicrobial resistance, has changed the way that many clinics treat their patients. Here we provide a summary of reported transmissible strains in the UK, other parts of Europe, Australi

OBJECTIVES: To determine susceptibility rates and patterns in Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated from nosocomial infections.
METHODS: Seven hundred and sixteen P. aeruginosa isolates from 40 different hospitals in Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg were collected in 1999.
RESULTS: Resistance rates varied significantly between hospitals. Of the fluoroquinolones, ciprofloxacin showed least resistance (24%), levofloxacin showed 27.5% resistance and ofloxacin 37.5%. Of the aminoglycosides, amikacin was the most potent antibiotic (10.5% resistance), followed by isepamicin (12%), tobra

Imipenem is the first of a new class of beta-lactam antimicrobial agents with remarkable and extremely potent in vitro activity against most commonly isolated bacterial pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, enterococcus, members of the family Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacteroides fragilis, and Hemophilus influenzae. The clinical efficacy and toxicity of imipenem were evaluated in 35 patients with 38 different infections. The overall clinical response was favorable (infections cured or improved) in 89% of the infections (34 of 38). Of the 17 infections with P. aeruginosa

The role of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in nosocomial infections occurring since 1975 is reviewed. Data from the National Nosocomial Infections Study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control, from individual medical centers, and from the literature were used to compare the relative frequency of occurrence of nosocomial infection caused by P. aeruginosa with that of infection caused by other gram-negative bacilli. The relative frequency of P. aeruginosa as a nosocomial pathogen has increased, although wide variations are seen among individual medical centers. P. aeruginosa continues to be a majo

A 68 year old man presented with urethritis and a purulent discharge, carrying the tentative diagnosis of gonorrhea. He had already been treated with multiple antibiotics. Microbiological investigation revealed Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a relatively frequent Gram-negative bacteria in hospitals, which can cause several nosocomial diseases such as pneumonia, wound infections and urogenital infections. Therapy can be difficult because of frequent antibiotic resistance. Guided by sensitivity studies, the patient was successfully treated with gyrase inhibitors. Pseudomonas aeruginosa-induced urogenit

During a 7-year period, 32 patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection were identified on an HIV treatment service at a university-affiliated teaching hospital. The number of cases increased from 2 in 1986 to 13 in 1992. Affected patients had evidence of advanced HIV infection. In those treated with antiretroviral therapy, 96% of infections occurred > 1 year after initial presentation with HIV disease. Eighteen cases of pneumonia and 14 nonpulmonary (central venous access device, soft tissue, middle ear-mastoid, corneal, and peritoneal) infections were seen. Comparison with matched controls

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important cause of infection in immunosuppressed patients, particularly those with cancer. However, it is being recognized with greater frequency in patients who appear to be immunocompetent. Changes in modern lifestyles have led to the appearance of some new manifestations of pseudomonas infection including corneal ulceration and keratitis associated with contact lenses, and hot-tub- or whirlpool-associated folliculitis. These represent additional hazards to patients with cancer. Many studies, both in animals and humans, have contributed to our knowledge of the pa
