Multiple Myeloma with Aberrant CD3 Expression in a Red-Lored Amazon Parrot (Amazona autumnalis).

A 20-year-old, female, red-lored Amazon parrot (Amazona autumnalis) was presented for a 2-week history of weakness. On physical examination, the bird was quiet, fluffed, weak, and had a distended coelom. Radiographic and ultrasound imaging revealed coelomic distention, increased pulmonary parenchymal opacity, renomegaly, dilated intestines, and a thickened ventricular wall. The results of a complete blood cell count indicated the patient was anemic (28%) and had intermediate to large lymphocytes with immature chromatin that were suspected to be neoplastic. Immunocytochemistry on peripheral blo

COELOMIC TERATOMA IN A BLUE-AND-YELLOW MACAW (ARA ARARAUNA).

A 2-mo-old, female blue-and-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna) presented with severe abdominal distension, pain, and respiratory distress. Ultrasonographic examination detected a heterogeneous mass with multiple anechoic areas, compatible with a multilocular cyst, occupying most of the coelomic cavity. Postmortem examination revealed a mass of 12.0 × 8.5 × 5.0 cm, which had an irregular surface and was connected by a pedicle to the ileum. This mass compressed and displaced the liver, proventriculus, gizzard, and intestines cranially to the left. The cut surface was lobulated, gray-white, mildly firm

Antifungal susceptibility and virulence attributes of animal-derived isolates of Candida parapsilosis complex.

This study aimed to identify strains of the Candida parapsilosis complex isolated from animals, as well as to assess their in vitro antifungal susceptibility profile and in vitro production of virulence attributes. We used 28 isolates of C. parapsilosis sensu lato recovered from clinically healthy animals. The strains were characterized phenotypically, followed by molecular identification of the species through PCR-restriction enzyme analysis. The susceptibility of the strains to amphotericin B, itraconazole, voriconazole, fluconazole and caspofungin was assessed through broth microdilution. A

Polyostotic hyperostosis associated with oviductal tumor in a cockatiel.

A 10-year-old female cockatiel in a thin and depressed condition and with a 1 X 2-cm soft abdominal swelling was hospitalized. Radiography revealed a well-circumscribed mass containing punctate areas of mineralization, displacing the gizzard cranially in the caudodorsal portion of the abdomen. There was bilateral, symmetric, generalized, increased medullary opacity of the radius, ulna, carpometacarpus, femur, tibiotarsus, and tarsometatarsus. These findings were compatible with polyostotic hyperostosis secondary to an estrogen-secreting tumor. Euthanasia and necropsy were requested. A small ar

Melioidosis in a sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita).

A case of melioidosis in a sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) kept as a pet in Townsville is described. This case was characterised by liver necrosis with both a heterophil and mononuclear cell inflammatory response associated with giant cells. Pseudomonas pseudomallei was isolated by blood plate culture and guinea pig inoculation. This is the first case of melioidosis reported in a native bird in Australia.

Redescription of Alcedinectes alcyon (Acari:Hypoderatidae) from the belted kingfisher (Aves:Coraciiformes; Alcedinidae).

Alcedinectes alcyon (Boyd) is redescribed based on specimens collected from its belted kingfisher, Megaceryle alcyon (L.), type host in Florida. This species differs from A. cerylei Fain by the chaetotaxy of tarsus III. A. alcyon has a long stout apical seta that tapers to a curved tip resembling that seen on tarsus III of the genus Tytodectes (Ispidectes) Fain. The equivalent seta in A. cerylei is a stout spine. There are other minor differences between these species in the pattern of idiosomal sclerotization and leg chaetotaxy. The chaetotaxy and solenidiotaxy of legs I and II in Alcedinecte

Isolation and identification of psittacid herpesvirus 1 from imported psittacines in South Africa.

Acute deaths occurred in 47 out of a total of 131 imported psittacine birds whilst in quarantine. Few and non-specific clinical signs were seen during the course of the disease outbreak, but gross pathology revealed severe hepatomegaly and splenomegaly. A herpes virus was isolated from liver and spleen material taken from 2 birds, an Amazon (Amazona aestiva aestiva) and a Yellow-collared macaw (Ara auricollis). Identification procedures included virus neutralisation tests carried out in chicken embryo fibroblast cultures. Neutralisation of the virus was obtained by antisera to Psittacid herpes

Captive Psittacine Birds in Ontario, Canada: a 19-Year Retrospective Study of the Causes of Morbidity and Mortality.

Psittacines (e.g. parrots, macaws and cockatoos) are common companion animals that are also kept in zoos and private breeding collections. Despite this popularity, long-term, comprehensive studies of diagnostic data from captive psittacines are rare. This study was conducted to assess trends in disease prevalence and to describe causes of morbidity and mortality in psittacines submitted for post-mortem examination to the veterinary hospital and diagnostic laboratory at the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Post-mortem reports of 1,850 psittacines from 1998 to 2017 were assessed and includ

Granulomatous nephritis in psittacines associated with parasitism by the trematode Paratanaisia spp.

Trematodes belonging to the family Eucotylidae are parasites of the kidney and ureter, and affect several bird species. However, psittacines have not been identified as hosts of these parasites. Three birds, an adult female blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna), an adult female blue-winged macaw (Propyrrhura maracana) and an adult male white-eared parakeet (Pyrrhura leucotis) were admitted at the Veterinary Hospital of the Fundação Zoo-Botânica de Belo Horizonte, Brazil (FZB/BH). All three birds had severe dehydration and cachexia. The blue and gold macaw presented with dyspnea, apathy, and incoo

Feather picking and self-mutilation in psittacine birds.

Feather-picking and self-mutilation behaviors are common in psittacine birds. These behaviors are best defined as stereotypic behaviors or obsessive compulsive disorders. There is likely a genetic predisposition for these behaviors as reflected in the overrepresentation of a number of species of psittacines. Stereotypies most often result from a high level of arousal and the inability to respond with the appropriate natural behaviors. More specifically, conflict may be induced by the absence of releasing stimuli or target objects. On a chemical level, stereotypic behavior appears to be related

Congenital extra-hepatic biliary cyst in a Congo African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus).

An 8-week-old Congo African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) was presented with a history of abdominal enlargement since hatch. Trans-illumination of the abdomen suggested that the enlargement was due to marked hepatomegaly. This was supported by radiographic and ultrasonic examination. Postmortem examination revealed an extra-hepatic biliary cyst 4 cm in diameter.

The many functions of vocal learning.

The capacity to learn novel vocalizations has evolved convergently in a wide range of species. Courtship songs of male birds or whales are often treated as prototypical examples, implying a sexually selected context for the evolution of this ability. However, functions of learned vocalizations in different species are far more diverse than courtship, spanning a range of socio-positive contexts from individual identification, social cohesion, or advertising pair bonds, as well as agonistic contexts such as territorial defence, deceptive alarm calling or luring prey. Here, we survey the diverse

[Pathologic X-ray signs in tuberculosis of ornamental birds and birds of prey].

Tuberculosis is still important as a disease of birds kept as pets and in zoos, and as a zoonosis. In living birds the diagnosis is difficult. In combination with the clinical and laboratory examination, radiology may help to lead to the diagnosis "generalised mycobacterial infection". Eight cases of tuberculosis seen in the clinic of our institute showed the different radiographic signs which may occur in the course of a mycobacterial infection. The specificity of the x-rays in combination with clinical and laboratory results is discussed.

A morphological study of the ultimobranchial body in the grass parakeet.

As parafollicular cells can be stained by Grimelius' silver impregnation and by lead-hematoxylin, the ultimobranchial body cells, homologous to them, seem to also react positively to these methods. In the present study of the ultimobranchial body of the grass parakeet, mirror-image sections were stained by both methods and compared. While about 50% of the cells reacted positively to both Grimelius' silver impregnation and lead-hematoxylin staining, only about 20% were positive to the former and about 30% were positive to the latter only. This result indicating heterogeneity among the cells of
