The importance of personally relevant knowledge for pandemic risk prevention behavior: A multimethod analysis and two-country validation.

Pandemics threaten world stability; however, spread is mitigated with prevention behaviors. We introduce "personally relevant knowledge" to explain the knowledge-behavior gap (i.e., objective and subjective knowledge on information acquisition and behavioral change). Hypotheses are derived from prior knowledge literature, economic psychology, and relevance theory. Multimethod analysis (survey data, partial least squares structural equation path modeling [PLS-SEM], and an asymmetric information theoretic statistical analysis) is applied to H1N1 data from the USA and Australia. Personally releva

Chapter 17: cognitive assessment in neurology.

Modern interests in cognitive assessment began with Franz Gall's early 19th century theory of mental organology and Paul Broca's reports in the 1860s on patients with focal brain injury and aphemia. These workers spurred interest in assessing delimited mental abilities in relation to discrete cerebral areas. With roots in experimental and educational psychology, the intelligence testing movement added assessment tools that could be applied to neurological patients. Early- to mid-20th-century landmarks were Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon's intelligence scale, Howard Knox's nonverbal performanc

Understanding linear interaction analysis with causal graphs.

Interaction analysis using linear regression is widely employed in psychology and related fields, yet it often induces confusion among applied researchers and students. This paper aims to address this confusion by developing intuitive visual explanations based on causal graphs. By leveraging causal graphs with distinct interaction nodes, we provide clear insights into interpreting main effects in the presence of interaction, the rationale behind centering to reduce multicollinearity, and other pertinent topics. The proposed graphical approach could serve as a useful complement to existing alge

Only Human: Mental-Health Difficulties Among Clinical, Counseling, and School Psychology Faculty and Trainees.

How common are mental-health difficulties among applied psychologists? This question is paradoxically neglected, perhaps because disclosure and discussion of these experiences remain taboo within the field. This study documented high rates of mental-health difficulties (both diagnosed and undiagnosed) among faculty, graduate students, and others affiliated with accredited doctoral and internship programs in clinical, counseling, and school psychology. More than 80% of respondents (n = 1,395 of 1,692) reported a lifetime history mental-health difficulties, and nearly half (48%) reported a diagn

Kinesiophobia and its relation to pain characteristics and cognitive affective variables in older adults with chronic pain.

BACKGROUND: The contribution of kinesiophobia (fear of movement) to the pain experience among older adults has been poorly evaluated. The aim of this study was to study prevalence at baseline, development over a 12-month period and cognitive-affective variables of kinesiophobia in a population-based sample of older adults with chronic pain. METHODS: The study included 433 older adults (+65 years) with chronic pain (mean age 74.8 years) randomly selected using a Swedish register of inhabitants. Kinesiophobia was measured at baseline and 12-month follow-up with the 11-item version of the Tampa

Over a half-century encapsulated: a multicultural content analysis of the Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1954-2009.

Articles including multicultural content published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology (JCP), from 1954 to 2009, were examined for themes. Multicultural content in this study was broadly defined to include the following identities: race/ethnicity, gender/sex, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation, social status, disability, age, and intersections. Inclusion of articles focused on each of these identity domains was reported by decade. Gender/sex was the most prevalent multicultural identity found in the JCP, followed by race/ethnicity. The most common themes for multicultural articles,

Assessing aggressiveness quickly and efficiently: the Spanish adaptation of Aggression Questionnaire-refined version.

The assessment of aggressiveness and the prediction of aggression has become a relevant research and applied topic in Psychiatry and Psychology. There have been many attempts in order to get a fast and reliable tool to measure aggression. Buss and Durkee started the pathway, and recently Bryant and Smith developed a tool with an enormous potential, a fast-applicable, reliable and valid test. We herein report a Spanish adaptation of this test and we show that aggressiveness can be measured rapidly, and in a simple, valid and reliable way across different populations. We focus on the discriminan

"There's no real roadmap that I know of": Experiences of transgender and nonbinary graduate students in counseling psychology programs.

Minimal research has examined the experiences of transgender and nonbinary (TNB) people in graduate school with no studies to date examining the experiences of TNB students in psychology graduate programs. The purpose of this study was to utilize a critical-ideological paradigm to identify recruitment, retention, and attrition factors for TNB people in counseling psychology (CP) programs with the aim of providing specific recommendations to CP programs. Individual interviews (between 35 and 70 min) were conducted with a sample of 16 TNB graduate students, aged 23-37-years old (M = 26.9, SD = 3

Emotion recognition from multimodal biosignals: supervised and unsupervised machine learning approaches based on EEG and GSR.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are increasingly applied in psychology, particularly in educational and clinical settings, to analyse complex behavioural and physiological data. However, evidence regarding the capacity of multimodal physiological signals to characterise cognitive and emotional processes in ecologically valid higher education environments remains limited. This study explored the potential of supervised and unsupervised ML approaches to analyse multimodal physiological responses elicited by emotional avatars in a real educational context. ME

Exploring the psychogastroenterology patterns of functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome comorbidities based on latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: Comorbidities between different subtypes of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are highly prevalent in clinical practice. The heterogeneity of clinical appearance of these comorbidities causes difficulties with individualized diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of FGIDs. In this study, we aimed to estimate and interpret the psychology-gastroenterology interaction patterns of FGIDs for heterogeneous clinical appearances against the traditional anatomic diagnosis criteria. METHODS: In a retrospective cross-sectional study, the intensities of clinical appearances coverin

Introduction: The transformative powers of aesthetic experiences in psychotherapy.

This issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychology: In Session contains seven essays that give expression to three basic convictions. The first is that therapists who are consistently able to help their patients make constructive changes in their lives practice psychotherapy creatively, whether or not they conceive of therapy as an applied science or as an art form. The second is that cultivating an aesthetic perspective on the communicative exchanges that take place in therapy can enhance a therapist's capacity to serve creatively as an agent of change. The third is that therapists can make bet

The revision process during handwritten text production: The case of French higher education students with dyslexia.

The goal of this paper is to observe revision during handwritten text production of French students with and without dyslexia. Subjects with typical language development automate spelling during childhood and adolescence, progressively with experience, this enables them-according to capacity theory applied to written text production (McCutchen, Educational Psychology Review, 8, 1996, 299)-to allocate more cognitive resources to higher-level processes (Bereiter & Scardamalia, The psychology of written composition. Hillsdale: Lawrence Erlbaum, 1987). A lack of automation in spelling could result

[Symmetry is beauty - or is it? The rise and fall of fluctuating asymmetry].

Fluctuating asymmetry is the stochastic, minor deviation from perfect symmetry in bilaterally symmetrical organisms. It reflects the limit of developmental precision. Such a precision can be influenced by various factors, both internal (genetic mutations, stochastic variation at every levels of development) and external (environmental influences). Fluctuating asymmetry has receive an extreme attention for the past few decades, that culminated in the 90s: it has been used as an estimator of heterozygosity, fitness, environmental stress, and widely applied to human biology, sociobiology and psyc
