BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: There is great interest, supported by clinical experience, in the relationship between Eating Disorders (EDs) and psychiatric symptoms and diseases. The psychopathology of EDs is also referred to many risk and protective factors, and there is some evidence in the literature, also about genetic and neurobiological factors involved. The aim of this review is to examine and synthesize the recent scientific literature on this topic, in particular the complex relationship between Anorexia Nervosa and Neuropsychiatric Disorders.
METHODS: We analyzed the best of published l

PURPOSE: Comorbidity in psychopathology is the norm. Despite some initial evidence, few studies have examined if the presence of comorbid conditions changes the expression of the pathology, either through increased severity of the syndrome(s) or by expanding to symptoms beyond the syndrome(s) (i.e., symptom overextension). The following report provides an illustration of interactive effects and overextension in comorbid pathology.
METHOD: A large pool of patients from a university hospital were assessed using SCID-I/P interviews. Of these, 230 patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to identify the relationship between perceived rearing styles and the clinical expression of Eating Disorders (ED).
METHODS: One hundred and ninety-six patients diagnosed of an ED and 127 healthy student as controls selected from the Nursing College were evaluated for general psychopathology (STAI, BDI II, RSE), and for abnormal eating attitudes (EAT, EDI-II, BITE). The EMBU (‘my memories of upbringing’) was administered for the assessment of perceived parental rearing styles and was used a questionnaire to assess familial variables.

Psychogenic movement disorder is defined as abnormal movements unrelated to a medical cause and presumed related to underlying psychological factors. Although psychological factors are of both clinical and pathophysiological relevance, very few studies to date have systematically assessed their role in psychogenic movement disorder. We sought to assess the role of previous life stress using validated quantitative measures in patients with psychogenic movement disorder compared with age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers as well as a convenience sample of patients with focal hand dystonia. Six

BACKGROUND: The aim was to document the spectrum of present and lifetime psychological disorders in female juvenile offenders, and to examine the relations between mental health status and socio-demographic, family and trauma variables.
METHOD: One hundred juvenile offenders were matched with a comparison group of 100 females on age and socioeconomic status (SES). Psychological profiles and trauma histories of both groups were assessed using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children--Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL) and family functioning was asses

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether having a baby following treatment for bulimia nervosa places women at increased risk for continuing or relapsing eating disorders or major depression.
METHODS: Subjects were women who had participated in a large randomized controlled trial evaluating cognitive behavior therapy for bulimia nervosa, who were prospectively followed-up over 5 years. At follow-up assessments (at least yearly), life charts were completed with patients and childbirth was recorded. The presence of eating disorders and major depressive disorder was assessed using the Structured Interview

The psychopathology and particularly the personality disorders of sex offenders were compared to general inmates of the Colorado Department of Corrections. Using the MCMI-III (Millon, 1994, 1997), sex offenders in general were found to have more varied types of personalities than general population inmates. Specifically, they were more schizoid, avoidant, depressive, dependent, self-defeating, and schizotypal. General population inmates had the more classically criminal personality characteristics of antisocial, narcissistic, and sadistic. Multivariate analysis showed the Dependent, Narcissist

Basic research into the genetics of childhood psychiatric disorders has substantially increased during the last two decades. Specific genetic mutations have been characterized in some developmental disorders (e.g., fragile X syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome), but thus far identification of etiological gene mutations in psychiatric illnesses has been unsuccessful. Several psychiatric disorders serve as examples of the current state of molecular approaches in child psychopathology. Investigations to date of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) have not resulted in the discovery of a gene of

BACKGROUND: Glossodynia or burning mouth syndrome has been suggested to be a multifunctional disorder. Etiologic factors that have been reported include hematologic or vitamin deficiencies, denture factors, the climacteric, infections or endocrinological disorders. On the other hand psychological factors, such as anxiety, depression and phobias have been reported to play a significant role at the beginning of this nosological entity. It seems therefore that there are two main categories of glossodynia, one with a detectable organic etiology and another with a psychologic origin. The purpose of

Some patients seen for the treatment of an eating disorder do not fulfill criteria for either of the two established disorders (Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa). This large number of patients currently can only be diagnosed as eating disorder not otherwise specified-EDNOS-(in DSM-III-R) or as atypical disorder (in ICD-19). The authors study some proposal of definition and classification of the Eating Disorders chapter for EDNOS and atypical disorders would be far smaller than they are now. Problems associated with the inclusion of weight concern as a necessary and defining criterion (the

This study compared daydreaming to fantasies used for self-comfort at times of stress in order to assess the degree of overlap in content between the two types of fantasy and to determine what types of daydreams are associated with indices of psychopathology. One hundred nineteen college undergraduates completed the Sustaining Fantasy Questionnaire (Zelin et al., 1983) and the Imaginal Processes Inventory (Singer & Antrobus, 1972), along with five general measures of maladjustment, which reflect ideational deviance, low or unstable self-concept, and reliance upon regressive defenses. The resul

A retrospective study of 30 Huntington's disease families (110 patients: 75 alive and 35 dead) known to a regional genetic centre, using multiple sources of information, showed the minimum lifetime prevalence of depression to be 39% in the prodrome and the diagnosed disease phase of the illness. The frequency of symptomatic schizophrenia was found to be about 9% and significant personality changes were found in 72% of the sample, some of them leading to gross behavioural anomalies. The findings reinforce the point that depression and schizophrenia, unaccompanied or preceded by organic personal

Sturge-Weber syndrome is a rare congenital disease which can impair a child's brain functions and psychosocial development. Its psychiatric aspects have been ignored in the literature. Two male Chinese patients who presented with paranoid disorders and one female Chinese patient who presented with depressive pseudo-dementia are described. Biological and psychosocial aspects of pathogenesis are discussed, especially in the light of a "shame-humiliation model" of paranoid processes, since shame and humiliation are engrained in Chinese culture. These case descriptions suggest an overlooked associ

A case report on a patient with Münchhausen syndrome is presented and the psychopathological features are compared to other reports in the literature. Diagnosis and differential diagnosis are discussed with regard to other somatoform disorders such as conversion disorder and somatization disorder as well as to malingering and cenesthesic schizophrenia. The management of Münchhausen syndrome is aggravated by the low compliance in these patients, who expose themselves to serious complications of unnecessary medical and surgical procedures. Early diagnosis could to a considerable extent exclude t

A group of 30 hospitalized cocaine abusers were studied, along with 124 hospitalized patients who were dependent upon opiates or central nervous system depressants. DSM-III diagnoses, family history data, demographic characteristics, and measures of current depressive symptomatology were compared in the two groups. Nineteen (63%) of the cocaine abusers met criteria for an Axis I diagnosis other than substance abuse; sixteen (53%) had affective disorder. These figures reflected a significantly higher prevalence rate of affective disorder among the cocaine abusers than among the opiate and depre

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pica is defined by the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 5th edition (DSM 5) as the ongoing ingestion of materials with no nutritive or food value. More specifically such ingestions must be unremitting for at least 1 month and occur at a developmentally inconsistent age for such behavior. This article reviews the association of pica with pregnancy, micronutrient deficiencies, psychiatric disorders, dementia, and developmental disorders with emphasis on autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
RECENT FINDINGS: Some variants of non-nutritive consum
