Trainee psychotherapists' emotion recognition accuracy during 1.5 years of psychotherapy education compared to a control group: no improvement after psychotherapy training.

The ability to recognize and work with patients' emotions is considered an important part of most psychotherapy approaches. Surprisingly, there is little systematic research on psychotherapists' ability to recognize other people's emotional expressions. In this study, we compared trainee psychotherapists' nonverbal emotion recognition accuracy to a control group of undergraduate students at two time points: at the beginning and at the end of one and a half years of theoretical and practical psychotherapy training. Emotion recognition accuracy (ERA) was assessed using two standardized computer

Cognitive-behavioral group therapy versus group psychotherapy for social anxiety disorder among college students: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: In this randomized controlled trial, cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) was compared to group psychotherapy (GPT), a credible, structurally equivalent control condition that included only nonspecific factors of group treatment (such as group dynamics). METHODS: Participants were 45 college students at the University of Colorado with a primary diagnosis of SAD. Each treatment condition comprised eight group sessions lasting 2 hr each. Independent assessors (blind to treatment assignment) assessed participants at baseline and posttreatment wit

Attempting to validate a group psychotherapy session taxonomy: A conceptual replication and extension.

This study attempted to conceptually replicate the five-category typology system for group psychotherapy sessions developed by Li et al. (2021) and aimed to identify whether sessions of one type and one climate valence were more likely to follow sessions of the same type (perseveration effect) and similar valence (climate valence continuity), respectively. Ninety-eight individuals with a history of problematic alcohol use attended one of 19 six-session groups, which were either focused on identity transitions or career development. Following each session, individuals' perceptions of the group

[Relational models and psychopathology of epileptics in a group-psychotherapy perspective (author's transl)].

Epileptic patients show a large range of psychopathologic manifestations, both from a qualitative point of view (even with an exact reference to the nature and the site of lesion) and from a quantitative point of view (from the so-called characterial attitude to the psychotic developments). Perhaps all these alterations of psychiatric interest have a common denominator because, after all, they arise from the sum of two essential moments: the experience of the critical event on the one hand, and the interactive network between the patient and those who are present to his critical manifestations

HOPE: A Pilot Study of Psilocybin Enhanced Group Psychotherapy in Patients With Cancer.

CONTEXT/OBJECTIVES: Psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy shows promise in treating depression and existential distress in people with serious medical illness. However, its individual-based methodology poses challenges for scaling and resource availability. The HOPE trial (A Pilot Study of Psilocybin Enhanced Group Psychotherapy in Patients with Cancer) is an Institutional Review Boards-approved open-label feasibility and safety pilot study examining psilocybin-assisted group therapy in cancer patients with a DSM-5 depressive disorder (including major depressive disorder as well as adjustment diso

Yoga-based Psychotherapy Groups for Boys Exposed to Trauma in Urban Settings.

BACKGROUND: Children who experience abuse and neglect and are exposed to adverse life events are at risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems. They may display variable internalizing and externalizing symptoms, such as posttraumatic stress, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and aggression. Yoga may be able to regulate body-brain pathways that cause stress following traumatic experiences, thereby reducing adverse mental and physical sequelae. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this preliminary study is to examine changes in functioning following meetings of a yoga-based psychotherapy g

[Attainment of generic therapy goals in a specialized group psychotherapy for phobic outpatients].

Individual therapy goals of psychotherapy patients either focus on symptom relief (disorder specific) or on improvements also in other functional areas (generic). The present study with 62 outpatients in a cognitive behavioral group psychotherapy (CBGT) investigated whether patients attain their disorder specific goals better than their generic therapy goals. Results indicated that patients reached disorder specific goals to a higher degree than the generic goals, although the group treatment specifically targeted the disorder specific goals. Implications of the results for the assessment and

Debriefing with brief group psychotherapy in a homogenous group of non-injured victims of a terrorist attack: a prospective study.

This study describes a follow-up of 15 non-injured women, all from the same socio-economic background, who were exposed to a terrorist attack in Israel. All of the women participated in group debriefing with brief group psychotherapy, involving six meetings during the first 2 months following the event. Two days after the attack, and 2 months and 6 months after the event, the women were administered a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnostic scale, the Impact of Event Scale (IES) and the SCL-90. At 6 months, four subjects (27%) were diagnosed with full PTSD. The IES showed significantl

Group interpersonal psychotherapy for generalized anxiety disorder: development process and a pilot test.

BACKGROUND: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a common and disabling psychiatric disorder that negatively impairs patients' quality of life. Studies suggest that inadequate consideration of interpersonal problems may contribute to the poor treatment response in psychotherapy for GAD. Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is an evidence-based psychosocial intervention that focuses on symptoms by improving interpersonal functioning, and research demonstrates that IPT is efficacious in treating social anxiety and panic disorders. To date, however, there are no studies examining IPT for patients w

Group interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-G) for borderline personality disorder: A randomized controlled study.

Recent evidence supported the notion that add-on group therapy should be provided to individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) who already undergo individual psychotherapy. The present 20 week-study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the adjunction of group interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-G) to individual interpersonal psychotherapy adapted for BPD - revised (IPT-BPD-R) in comparison with individual IPT-BPD-R alone in a group of BPD patients. In addition, demographical and clinical characteristics that can be considered predictors of response to add-on group therapy were inves

Adding group psychotherapy to medication treatment in dysthymia: a randomized prospective pilot study.

Patients with dysthymia have been shown to respond to treatment with antidepressant medications, and to some degree to psychotherapy. Even patients successfully treated with medication often have residual symptoms and impaired psychosocial functioning. The authors describe a prospective randomized 36-week study of dysthymic patients, comparing continued treatment with antidepressant medication (fluoxetine) alone and medication with the addition of group therapy treatment. After an 8-week trial of fluoxetine, medication-responsive subjects were randomly assigned to receive either continued medi

Brief report: sudden gains in cognitive-behavioral group therapy and group psychotherapy for social anxiety disorder among college students.

The present study examined sudden gains (SGs; large symptom improvements between adjacent treatment sessions) and its association with treatment outcome in a randomized-controlled trial comparing cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT) versus group psychotherapy (GPT; designed to incorporate only non-specific factors) for social anxiety disorder (SAD). SAD symptoms were assessed after each treatment session in a sample of 45 college students. Independent assessors evaluated symptom severity at baseline, post-treatment and follow-up. A total of 10 (22.2%) participants experienced SGs during t

Online group psychodynamic psychotherapy-The effectiveness and role of attachment-The results of a short study.

The role of remote treatment, including psychotherapy, has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of research in this area are promising, initially pointing to similar effectiveness for online psychotherapy as that of face-to-face psychotherapy. A significantly smaller amount of research has been conducted on online group psychotherapy, in particular, in the psychodynamic paradigm. Many authors have drawn attention to the need to conduct further research, considering specific patient features, for example, personality traits, attachment style, age, and other demographic variables.

The effectiveness of continuing group psychotherapy for outpatients with alcohol dependence: 77-month outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Group psychotherapy (PT) is one of the most common interventions used to treat alcohol dependence (AD), and it is assumed to be effective. Despite its common clinical use, long-term trials that have been conducted to examine the efficacy of group PT in the treatment of outpatients with AD are limited and often lack appropriate comparisons. On that basis, a long-term comparative trial was performed with the main objective of evaluating the effectiveness of continuing group PT for outpatients with AD. METHODS: Quasi-experimental trial was conducted from January 2004 to May 2010 in 1
