BACKGROUND: Evidence-based psychotherapeutic treatments for Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) remain limited. This pilot trial evaluated the preliminary efficacy of Short-term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (STPP) plus Standard Medical Care (SMC) compared with SMC alone in reducing FND symptom frequency.
METHODS: Adults with FND were randomized (1:1) to receive either SMC alone or 12 weekly sessions of STPP plus SMC. The primary outcome was symptom frequency (days with symptoms in the last 4 weeks) assessed at the end of treatment (3 months) and at 6-month follow-up. Secondary outcomes incl

Objectives This study examines the effectiveness and efficiency of intensive psychodynamic psychotherapy for severely impaired patients. Method: 104 patients in four public mental health centers underwent intensive psychodynamic psychotherapy. The number and duration of psychiatric hospitalizations were monitored for these patients from one year before therapy to eight years after. Several outcome variables were measured every six months, six times in total over two and a half years, using a longitudinal design. A multi-level analytic approach was applied to account for repeated measurements a

BACKGROUND: Despite growing attention to the general therapist effects in a wide range of clinical settings, little is known about the individual, cross-situational, and therapy-nonspecific variables that impact on the differential effectiveness of clinicians. The current study is a systematic review of the evidence relating to the influence of therapist's subjective characteristics on outcomes of psychodynamic psychotherapies.
METHOD: A multistage and systematic search of articles published between 1987 and 2017 identified 30 relevant studies, which were organized into 6 areas according to t

The article presents a proposal of integrating the basic concepts of object relations theory with the psychodramatic techniques by Moreno in treatment of eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia nervosa). The author pays attention to the common elements and also on the differences in psychopathology of eating disorder from a medical perspective, psychoanalytic and psychodynamic paradigm and moreover psychodrama by Moreno. Moreover she points to common elements and the possibility of applying psychodramatic and psychodynamic therapeutic techniques in individual and group psychotherapy in persons

Emotional experience may play a more central role in the origin and treatment of psychopathology than has been previously recognized. A constructionist model of emotional experience holds that in addition to defenses, affective bodily responses may not be experienced as specific emotions because they haven't been conceptualized or mentally represented as such. It is argued that emotional experience is the core feature of three critical steps in the change process: (a) activating previous traumatic memories and formulating the associated specific emotional experiences for the first time, (b) ha

The role of remote treatment, including psychotherapy, has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of research in this area are promising, initially pointing to similar effectiveness for online psychotherapy as that of face-to-face psychotherapy. A significantly smaller amount of research has been conducted on online group psychotherapy, in particular, in the psychodynamic paradigm. Many authors have drawn attention to the need to conduct further research, considering specific patient features, for example, personality traits, attachment style, age, and other demographic variables.

Panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (PFPP) is a 24-session, twice-weekly (12 weeks), manualized psychoanalytic psychotherapy with demonstrated preliminary efficacy for panic disorder (PD)., Given the substantial morbidity and the health care utilization of the PD population,, coupled with the sizable proportion of such patients who do not respond (or respond inadequately) to alternate treatments (cognitive-behavioral therapy [CBT] and drug therapy),– PFPP may offer clinicians an additional tool for their therapeutic armamentarium. It may also facilitate a rapprochement between academic p

OBJECTIVE: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals report higher rates of exposure to traumatic events and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared with heterosexual and cisgender individuals. No treatment outcomes research has focused on PTSD in the LGBTQ population. Trauma-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (TFPP) is a brief, manualized, attachment- and affect-focused psychotherapy for PTSD. TFPP explicitly incorporates broad identity-related and societal factors into its conceptualization of trauma and its consequences, which may be especially helpful for LG

OBJECTIVE: Neurobiological models of depression posit limbic hyperactivity that should normalize after successful treatment. For psychotherapy, though, brain changes in patients with depression show substantial variability. Two critical issues in relevant studies concern the use of unspecific stimulation experiments and relatively short treatment protocols. Therefore changes in brain reactions to individualized stimuli were studied in patients with depression after eight months of psychodynamic psychotherapy.
METHODS: 18 unmedicated patients with recurrent major depressive disorder were confr

Introduction: Psychodynamic psychotherapy is an effective treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD), but few specific curricula for psychiatric residents currently exist. The authors developed an online learning module to teach psychodynamic psychotherapy for BPD to psychiatry residents, based on the following educational methods: the ADDIE (analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation) design process, the Morrison, Ross, and Kemp instructional design model, and the 4C/ID (four-components instructional design) model. Methods: Indonesian residents, psychiatrists, and psyc

In this article, the authors present a psychodynamically oriented psychotherapy approach for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to childhood abuse. This neurobiologically informed, phase-oriented treatment approach, which has been developed in Germany during the past 20 years, takes into account the broad comorbidity and the large degree of ego-function impairment typically found in these patients. Based on a psychodynamic relationship orientation, this treatment integrates a variety of trauma-specific imaginative and resource-oriented techniques. The approach places major emphasis o

BACKGROUND: Whether long-term psychodynamic therapy (LPP) and psychoanalysis (PA) differ from each other and require different therapist qualities has been debated extensively, but rarely investigated empirically.
METHODS: In a quasi-experimental design, LPP was provided for 128 and PA for 41 outpatients, aged 20-46 years and suffering from mood or anxiety disorder, with a 5-year follow-up from start of treatment. Therapies were provided by 58 experienced therapists. Therapist characteristics, measured pre-treatment, were assessed with the Development of Psychotherapists Common Core Questionn

OBJECTIVE: This study examined 1) whether patients with chronic and recurrent anxiety and depressive disorders and/or personality disorders demonstrate improvement in their defense styles with long-term dynamic psychotherapy and 2) what the relationship is between defense style change and symptomatic change.
METHOD: Measures of defense (Defense Style Questionnaire) and symptoms and functioning were administered at regular intervals over the course of 3-5 years to adults who entered a naturalistic study of long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy. With hierarchical linear regression, the relative

BACKGROUND: Although established treatments for social anxiety disorder (SAD) are effective, a substantial proportion of patients does not respond. This meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of psychodynamic therapy (PDT) by assessing its short- and long-term effects on social anxiety symptoms, as well as on secondary measures of depressive symptoms. METHODS: A systematic literature search following PICO criteria identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of PDT for SAD published since 1980. Study quality was assessed using the Randomized Controlled Trial Psychotherapy Quality Rating Scale

This article presents a single-case experimental study of a woman suffering a traumatized reaction to a road traffic accident (RTA). In addition to meeting the DSM-IV (APA, 1994) criteria for the diagnosis of PTSD, the client suffered recurrent bizarre nightmares. The client reported at assessment, that each night her dreams were dominated by a terrifying hooded cloaked faceless figure. The central aim of the study therefore was to assess the efficacy of a psychodynamic-interpersonal (PI) style psychotherapy in the context of an unusual PTSD reaction. The methodology employed an A/B multiple b

BACKGROUND: Psychodynamic psychotherapy is the treatment of choice for borderline personality disorder (BPD); however, psychiatric residents frequently report difficulty in applying it, partly due to the lack of structured training models. This study developed and evaluated the effectiveness of psychodynamic psychotherapy learning modules for BPD among Indonesian psychiatry residents.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental pre-/post-test control group study using mixed methods was conducted across nine psychiatric residency programs in Indonesia. Thirty-four residents were recruited, of whom 33 comple

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to test the hypothesis that externalizing and internalizing helpfulness beliefs and learning styles at baseline moderate panic severity and overall mental illness as short-term and long-term outcomes of two panic-focused psychotherapies, Panic Control Treatment (PCT) and Panic-Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (PFPP).
METHOD: Participants were 108 adults with DSM-IV Panic Disorder with or without Agoraphobia (PD/A) who were randomized to treatment in a trial of PCT and PFPP. Piece-wise/segmented multilevel modeling was used to test three-way interactions (Treatm

OBJECTIVE: This article examines outcomes of the first randomized controlled trial of Regulation Focused Psychotherapy for Children (RFP-C), a manualized, short-term, psychodynamic intervention for decreasing symptoms of the oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in school-aged children.
METHOD: Participants (n = 43) were school-aged children who were randomly assigned to RFP-C or a waitlist control group. Symptoms of ODD and explicit emotion regulation capacities were assessed at baseline, end of waitlist, and end of treatment. Multilevel modeling was used to account for patient and therapist f

This pre-registered systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO CRD42023490547) evaluated the effectiveness of long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (LTPP) in reducing depressive symptoms using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) framework and updated empirically supported treatment (EST) criteria. MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched through January 16, 2025. Sixteen randomized controlled trials involving 1992 participants met inclusion criteria (LTPP ≥9 months, ≥30 sessions), encompassing

Internalizing and externalizing problems have been related to negative emotionality, and affect regulation deficits in several studies. Certain psychodynamic models of treatment use children's symbolic play activity as a medium to mentalize negative emotions in order to develop children's affect regulation. However, the complex associations among these constructs and their associations with outcome have not been examined. This study aimed to investigate, first, whether average mentalization practices in treatment, as well as session-to-session expression of negative emotions and symbolic play
