Application of Psychrotolerant Antarctic Bacteria and Their Metabolites as Efficient Plant Growth Promoting Agents.

Iron is the fourth most abundant element on earth. However, its low bioavailability is a key plant-growth limiting factor. Bacteria play an important role in plant growth promotion since they produce specific secondary metabolites that may increase macro- and micronutrient accessibility in soil. Therefore, bacterial-derived iron chelators, as well as surface-active compounds, are recognised as essential to plant welfare. In this study, three cold-active Antarctic bacterial strains, i.e. Pseudomonas sp. ANT_H12B, Psychrobacter sp. ANT_H59 and Bacillus sp. ANT_WA51, were analysed. The physiologi

Topographical Mapping of the Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Microbiome Reveals a Diverse Bacterial Community with Antifungal Properties in the Skin.

The mucosal surfaces of wild and farmed aquatic vertebrates face the threat of many aquatic pathogens, including fungi. These surfaces are colonized by diverse symbiotic bacterial communities that may contribute to fight infection. Whereas the gut microbiome of teleosts has been extensively studied using pyrosequencing, this tool has rarely been employed to study the compositions of the bacterial communities present on other teleost mucosal surfaces. Here we provide a topographical map of the mucosal microbiome of an aquatic vertebrate, the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Using 16S rRNA p

Pink discoloration defects associated with microbial structure and metabolome changes in commercial bloomy cheeses.

This study investigates pink discoloration defects in French bloomy rind soft cheeses, which can negatively affect product appearance, consumer acceptance, and lead to economic losses. Two batches of cheese from the same processing plant were analyzed: one with visible pink discoloration and one without, allowing for comparative analysis. A multi-omics approach was applied, combining microbial profiling (16S rRNA and ITS2 sequencing) and metabolomics (GC-MS and LC-MS) to identify the factors linked to the defect. Three microbial species showed significant differences in abundance depending on

Diethyl ethylphosphonate retardants disturbed the gut microbiome and metabolite SCFAs in vitro based on simulator of the human intestinal microbial ecosystem.

Diethyl ethylphosphonate (DEEP) as a novel organophosphorus flame retardant received increasing attention and its structure was discovered. But there are currently insufficient studies on how DEEP exposure affects the gut microbiome. In this study, the effects of DEEP on the structure and function of the human gut microbiota were examined using the SHIME system. Results from high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene show that the high dose DEEP exposure reduced the Shannon and Simpson index in the transverse and descending colon. The Bacillota had the highest proportion while the proport

Antibiotic and Heavy Metal Resistance in Marine Bacteria from Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea): Insights from Wild Fish and Environmental Samples.

This study examines the occurrence of bacteria resistant to antibiotics and heavy metals in Terra Nova Bay, a coastal area of the Ross Sea in Antarctica that is increasingly recognised as vulnerable to human influence. During the 37th Italian Antarctic Expedition (2021-2022), researchers collected seawater, sediment, and fish samples from the notothenioid species Trematomus bernacchii to evaluate microbial resistance in an environment once considered largely pristine. Fifty heterotrophic bacterial isolates were obtained and tested against twenty-eight antibiotics, revealing a notable presence

Exploring the anti-quorum sensing potential of sea anemone bacterial symbionts from Samalona Island (Spermonde Archipelago) in South Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Vannamei shrimp is a promising aquaculture commodity, but presence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus bacteria in cultivation poses a challenge to increasing productivity. Quorum sensing allows bacteria to regulate pathogenicity based on population density. The aim of this study were to screen antiquorum sensing agents that can inhibit bacterial communication, thereby reducing pathogen virulence. The method used in the screening process goes through several stages, such as isolation of anemone symbiont bacteria, screening for inhibition of violacein and antibiofilm production, as well as molecular ide

Pyrodextrin enhances intestinal function through changing the intestinal microbiota composition and metabolism in early weaned piglets.

Pyrodextrin (PD) is prepared from starch by heat treatment and is resistant to amylase. We hypothesized that PD might have prebiotic potential affecting the microbiota composition, because it contains a non-digestible portion that may behave as dietary fiber. This study investigated the effects of PD supplementation on growth performance, gut morphology, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and the bacterial community in weaned piglets receiving dietary supplementation of 0.5% PD. The piglets in the PD (treated) groups showed greater antioxidant capacity and feed efficiency (P < 0.05), as well as
