Evaluation of the Effects of Psyllium Husk on the Physicochemical Properties and In Vitro Protein Digestibility of Chicken Myofibrillar Proteins at Various NaCl Concentrations.

Reducing salt while maintaining meat product quality is important, and psyllium husk may help preserve quality and protein digestibility. This study was conducted to evaluate how the addition of psyllium husk powder (PHP) affects the rheological properties of chicken myofibrillar protein (MP) at various NaCl concentrations. Additionally, an in vitro digestion model was applied to evaluate the effects of PHP on protein digestibility. As NaCl increased, the viscosity of MP increased, and the addition of PHP further increased viscosity. The hydrophobicity increased with higher NaCl levels. Howeve

Effects of Psyllium Husk Gel on Phase Redistribution, Microstructure, and Thermal Properties of Whole Wheat Dough and Steamed Bread Quality.

Psyllium husk gel (PHG) is a soluble dietary fiber with well-documented health benefits, yet its application in whole wheat products is constrained by complex interactions with the gluten network. This study investigated the effects of PHG at 0%, 2%, 8%, and 14% on the phase mass and protein redistribution, microstructure, thermal properties, and steamed bread quality of whole wheat dough. PHG reduced the aqueous phase mass after ultracentrifugation and reallocated proteins predominantly to the water-insoluble fraction, while non-protein substances shifted to the water-soluble fraction associa

Psyllium husk, carbohydrate polymer based novel plug-in capsule device for pulsatile release from meloxicam-β-cyclodextrin-pectin ternary complex.

Chronomodulated diseases demonstrate circadian fluctuations. Conventional dosage forms are inadequate for mitigating these ailments; instead, time-scheduled drug release is necessary for pharmacological efficacy. The current investigation aims to develop natural, carbohydrate polymer-based novel plug-in capsule, pulsatile drug delivery system with engineered specificity of meloxicam with low aqueous solubility. β-CD is employed to boost solubility by forming solid ternary inclusion complexes where natural polymers, viz., pectin and agar, act as ternary agents. Plug-in capsule device is prepare

Micronutrient status of individuals with overweight and obesity following 3 months' supplementation with PolyGlycopleX (PGX®) or psyllium: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Safe and effective weight control strategies are needed to curtail the current obesity epidemic worldwide. Increasing dietary fibre has shown positive results with weight loss as well as in the reduction of metabolic syndrome risk factors. However, fibre can act as an inhibitor to the bioavailability of micronutrients in the gastrointestinal tract. While there is a substantial amount of scientific research into psyllium fibre, PolyGlycopleX (PGX®) is a novel fibre and as yet the effects of PGX® on micronutrient status is not well researched. AIM: To determine whether 3-months' sup

Psyllium seed husk regulates the gut microbiota and improves mucosal barrier injury in the colon to attenuate renal injury in 5/6 nephrectomy rats.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can cause gut microbiota dysbiosis and thus impair intestinal barrier function. Disruption of intestinal homeostasis facilitates the production of enterogenic toxins, which exacerbate CKD-induced uremic toxicity and inflammation. Dietary fiber, by targeting the gut-kidney axis, could be used for CKD treatment. Psyllium seed husk (PSH) extracted from the seeds of Plantago ovata contains highly branched, gel-forming arabinoxylan. Positive effects of PSH on host physiology have been demonstrated but whether it also acts on the microbial ecosystem in CKD patients is un

Psyllium and Glucomannan as Viscous Fiber Modulators of the Gut-Microbiome-Incretin Axis: Molecular Links to Metabolic Inflammation, Barrier Function, and GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Therapy.

Dietary fiber is an under-consumed nutritional substrate that supports gut microbial metabolism, intestinal barrier integrity, enteroendocrine signaling, and cardiometabolic regulation. Among dietary fibers, psyllium and glucomannan are clinically accessible viscous, gel-forming soluble fibers with distinct but complementary physicochemical profiles. This narrative review examines how these fibers act through luminal viscosity, nutrient diffusion, bile acid and cholesterol handling, short-chain fatty acid production, epithelial barrier support, enteroendocrine L-cell signaling, and low-grade m

A randomised, placebo-controlled trial in healthy humans of modified cellulose or psyllium evaluating the role of gelation in altering colonic gas production during inulin co-administration.

Dietary fibre is vital for a healthy diet, yet many people avoid it because of symptoms induced by colonic gas. Slowing rapid fermentation decreases colonic distention and reduces symptoms, allowing for better tolerance of prebiotics. Co-administration of inulin, a fermentable fibre, with psyllium, a gel-forming fibre, reduces gas production in irritable bowel syndrome patients compared to administering inulin alone, but the underlying mechanism is unclear. We hypothesise that psyllium polysaccharides' physically cross-linked gel resists gastrointestinal shear forces and impairs microbial acce

Dietary fibre supplementation enhances radiotherapy tumour control and alleviates intestinal radiation toxicity.

BACKGROUND: Non-toxic approaches to enhance radiotherapy outcomes are beneficial, particularly in ageing populations. Based on preclinical findings showing that high-fibre diets sensitised bladder tumours to irradiation by modifying the gut microbiota, along with clinical evidence of prebiotics enhancing anti-cancer immunity, we hypothesised that dietary fibre and its gut microbiota modification can radiosensitise tumours via secretion of metabolites and/or immunomodulation. We investigated the efficacy of high-fibre diets combined with irradiation in immunoproficient C57BL/6 mice bearing blad
