Myositis ossificans is a disease that is characterized by nonneoplastic, heterotopic bone formation within a muscle. Myositis ossificans traumatica, also called myositis ossificans circumscripta, is a disease in which muscles are ossified presumably following acute trauma, burns, surgical manipulation, or repeated injury. It is often remitted after surgical excision though some patients have repeated recurrences. Myositis ossificans traumatica of masticatory muscles is not frequently reported in the literature, with the most common clinical finding being a progressive limitation of motion in t

The botulinum toxin administration into the lateral pterygoid muscle has shown promising outcomes in anterior disc displacement with reduction. The deep location of the muscle and its proximity to vital structures and interindividual variation necessitate the use of guidance techniques. This technical report describes a new guidance technique which provides lateral pterygoid muscle segmentation using CT with soft tissue window for 3D augmented environment of the muscle together with its surrounding skeletal and dental structures.

The goal of surgical treatment of mandibular head fracture is to restore anatomical relations; however, it also carries other implications. The purpose of this study is to present the alteration in the size of lateral pterygoid muscles after surgical treatment of unilateral mandibular head fractures and the impact of this change on the range of motion of the mandible. Another issue addressed is the persistence of changes in the appearance of the lateral pterygoid muscles after surgical treatment. In this study, 66 patients with unilateral mandibular head fracture were included. An additional 1

OBJECTIVES: To determine the cause of sudden brief unilateral tapering tinnitus (SBUTTs).
PATIENTS: Five adults evaluated at a tertiary tinnitus referral center.
INTERVENTION: Dry needling of lateral pterygoid muscle of one patient; jaw maneuvers in two patients.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Halting of SBUTTs.
RESULTS: Trauma to the region of the lateral pterygoid muscle is associated with ipsilateral SBUTTs. Dry needling of the lateral pterygoid muscles abolishes SBUTTs. Some SBUTTs can be heard by others.
CONCLUSIONS: Some, if not all, SBUTTs appear to be closely related to trigger points wit

A 3-year-old gelding was presented for further evaluation and treatment of a swelling over the left mandible and inability to eat and drink. Radiographs of the mandible were unremarkable. Computed tomography (CT) of the head demonstrated a fracture of the basihyoid bone and partial avulsion of the medial pterygoid muscle. Ultrasound examination was performed to establish a baseline and confirmed the fracture. The gelding was managed conservatively, recovered uneventfully, and was able to return to training after 4 months of rest. Key clinical message: Computed tomography and ultrasonography in

We evaluated lateral pterygoid muscle volume in closed and open mouth positions in association with anterior disc displacement, effusion and abnormal articular disc shape from three-dimensional reformations of MRI. A total of 24 MRI of a sample (15 females, 9 males) aged 19-64 years (37.2 years±11.4) were assessed. Segmentation and volumetric assessment of the total, upper and lower heads of the lateral pterygoid muscle were performed using free software. The upper head of the lateral pterygoid muscle had a smaller volume than the lower head at both sides, in the closed- and open-mouth positio

OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this article are to report the imaging finding of inferior displacement of the lower belly of the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) in patients with lesions arising from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and to propose that this imaging finding is suggestive of the presence of a TMJ lesion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed computed tomographic and magnetic resonance images of 9 patients with lesions involving the TMJ. Images were evaluated for identification of an inferiorly displaced lower belly of the LPM. Pathology reports were reviewed to determine the histopatho

INTRODUCTION: Myositis ossificans traumatica is a pathological condition characterized by the extraskeletal formation of bony tissue, induced by violent or repeated trauma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old Italian man, after surgical treatment for multiple facial fractures, presented with a progressive limitation of mouth opening. A computed tomography scan showed a significant calcification of the fibers of the left lateral pterygoid muscle. The working diagnosis was myositis ossificans traumatica of the left lateral pterygoid muscle. Surgical excision was suggested but not performed. Our pa

The aim of this study was to examine the role of the lateral peterygoid muscle in the reconstruction of the shape of the condyle during healing of a sagittal fracture of the mandibular condyle. Twenty adult sheep were divided into 2 groups: all had a unilateral operation on the right side when the anterior and posterior attachments of the discs were cut, and an oblique vertical osteotomy was made from the lateral pole of the condyle to the medial side of the condylar neck. Ten sheep had the lateral pterygoid muscle cut, and the other 10 sheep did not. Sheep were killed at 4 weeks (n=2 from eac

The aim of treatment for luxation fractures of the mandibular articular processes is not only complete anatomical restitution but also restoration of the mobility. In a retrospective study on 242 patients after operative and conservative treatment, it was possible to demonstrate that there are no correlations between fragment position and functional result. Functional restitution was observed after conservative treatment in 65% of cases and after operative treatment in 57%. In order to establish the causes for dysfunction of the lateral pterygoid muscle an electromyographical technique was dev

The present report described a rare case of mandible deviation with longstanding unilateral temporomandibular joint dislocation caused by lateral pterygoid muscle hyaline degeneration. A 28-year-old male was referred for mandible deviation for 2 years. It was found that the left condyle was dislocated just below the articular eminence with the dilated capsule in magnetic resonance imaging images. After surgical dissection of the lateral pterygoid muscle, which was excessively attached to the condyle, the left condyle was reduced, and the patient's mandibular deviation was greatly improved. The

The lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM), a critical component of the masticatory muscles, typically comprises upper (SLPM) and lower (ILPM) heads. However, it is essential to note that the LPM's structure is not a constant feature, as the number of bundles and their topography can vary. Moreover, additional heads, such as medial and middle heads, and unique-headed configurations of the LPM have been reported. Several studies have demonstrated the penniform structure of the LPM, which is further supported by its diverse pattern of innervation. Anatomically, the LPM originates from the greater wing a

Psychological stress is an important perpetuating, worsening and risk factor for temporomandibular disorders of muscular or articular origin. Occlusion instability, by the way, is considered a risk factor of this pathology and can be reproduced in some experimental animal models. The exact physiologic mechanism underlying these relations however, remains unclear. Our purpose was to test the hypothesis that chronic stress and unilateral exodontia induce metabolic and vascular changes in the medial pterygoid muscle of rats. Adult Wistar rats were submitted to chronic unpredictable stress and/or

The purpose of this study was to verify the role of the lateral pterygoid muscle in the reconstruction of the condyle shape during the sagittal fracture healing process by histological methods. Twenty-four adult sheep underwent an osteotomy to create a sagittal fracture of the left condyle; the sheep were then divided randomly into two groups. The lateral pterygoid muscles of the sheep in the experimental group were maintained on the internal poles of the condyles, and their functions remained stable. The lateral pterygoid muscles of the sheep in the control group were cut, and their functions
