Costs incurred by patients with oral potentially malignant disorders: is there a public health need for financial protection in India?

OBJECTIVES: Financial protection mechanisms are in place to overcome the costs of a few diseases in India. Our objective was to estimate the costs incurred due to Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders (OPMD) and to determine predictors of such costs. RESULTS: We found that the median (Interquartile range IQR) total costs of OPMD was Indian Rupees (INR) 500 (350-750), direct medical costs was INR 0 (0-50), direct non-medical costs was INR 150 (40-200) and indirect costs was INR 350 (250-500). The travel cost to attend the health facilities [INR 100 (40-150)] and the patient's loss of wages [INR

Impact of multimorbidity on household expenditure in China: evidence from the China health and retirement longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity poses a significant global economic burden, profoundly affecting individuals' standard of living and leading to substantial increases in healthcare expenditures. Understanding how households strategically adjust expenditures to cope with multimorbidity-induced financial strain-and how these strategies differ across economic groups-is a critical and understudied issue that demands immediate research attention. METHODS: This study employs data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) for the years 2013, 2015, 2018, and 2020. We apply a panel To

Association of recreational cannabis legalization with changes in medical, illegal, and total cannabis expenditures in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Recreational cannabis legalization (RCL) is being adopted by a growing number of jurisdictions internationally. RCL aims to displace the illegal cannabis market and has the potential to disrupt the medical market, yet few studies have examined these dynamics empirically. METHODS: We used interrupted time series analysis to evaluate whether RCL (legislative passage in October 2017/implementation in October 2018) was associated with changes in quarterly national household expenditures on medical cannabis, illegal cannabis, and all cannabis types combined (licensed, illegal, and medi

Healthcare costs of childhood overweight and obesity in Chile: evidence from an analysis of linked administrative records.

BACKGROUND: Childhood overweight and obesity are highly prevalent in Chile, affecting over 50% of children under the age of 12, yet evidence on the healthcare costs associated with them remains limited. In this study, we quantify the association between high body mass index (BMI)-for-age and annual health expenditures among school-aged children using linked national administrative data. METHODS: We linked anthropometric measurements from a national school-based surveillance system with health expenditure records from the public and private insurance systems. The sample included children in pr

The Effectiveness of Sinking Lid Policies in Reducing Gambling Expenditure.

In many countries, problem gambling is a significant public health concern. Gambling addiction has been linked to poor health, psychological distress, financial difficulties, and strained interpersonal relationships. In New Zealand, problem gambling is estimated to affect over 10% of the population. To minimize harm, the Gambling Act of 2003 was introduced to limit the number of electronic gaming machines in non-casino establishments. Beyond national-level restrictions, local governments were required to adopt gambling policies of their own and review them every three years. One specific polic

The role of state social service spending in moderating mental health outcomes of community violence: A spatial meta-analysis.

Community violence is an epidemic in the United States. Studies estimate almost 30% of youth experience community violence, with higher rates in low-income urban settings. Community violence exposure is consistently linked to adverse mental health outcomes, including post-traumatic stress, internalizing, and externalizing symptoms. In response, nationwide efforts have emphasized increased financial investment in social services as a potential means to mitigate the impact of violence exposure. Yet, gaps remain in understanding whether structural investments (i.e., social service expenditures) m
