BACKGROUND: The attitude of general practitioners (GPs) to public health surveillance is not well documented, even though they furnish essential information, in particular for sentinel surveillance among the general population.
METHODS: The attitude of 560 French GPs to the surveillance of 17 communicable diseases was researched. Half the GPs had previous experience in public health surveillance and the other half did not. Their motivation for belonging to a public health surveillance network and some of their demographic characteristics were also investigated. Their attitude was compared wit

CONTEXT: Environmental surveillance has become an essential component of public health pathogen surveillance programs. Indoor air surveillance is a promising environmental surveillance method but has yet to be scaled citywide and incorporated into state and local public health programs.
PROGRAM: The Chicago Department of Public Health established a citywide indoor air surveillance program to enhance monitoring of airborne pathogens and address gaps in existing surveillance.
IMPLEMENTATION: The program began with a pilot phase from February to April 2023 at 5 sites, which informed expansion t

Timely identification of infectious disease threats is essential for public health readiness. Conventional indicator-based surveillance systems, while dependable for tracking established pathogens, frequently lack the agility and sensitivity to detect new infections promptly. Syndromic surveillance, which examines pre-diagnostic and non-specific health indicators from many data sources in near real time, serves as a significant complementary method that improves early warning and situational awareness. This narrative study analysed selected experiences with syndromic surveillance, utilising pe

Persistent SARS-CoV-2 transmission, ongoing mpox outbreaks, and the continued spread of endemic diseases such as typhoid fever and cholera underscore the urgent need for global, multiomics surveillance. In this Personal View, we present Project ODIN, a consortium of European and African partners launched in 2023 that aims to meet this challenge by deploying innovative systems for near real-time pathogen detection and actionable public health insights. The project is a collaboration between high-income and low-income countries in northern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. Focusing on low-income an

IMPORTANCE: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) pose a substantial public health challenge, but fragmented reporting systems have limited capacity for disease surveillance approaches that might support a learning public health system, where near real-time data-driven insights are integrated to inform, evaluate, and adapt public health strategies.
OBJECTIVE: To examine how health information exchanges and open government data can be leveraged to foster a learning public health system by characterizing and comparing patterns in diagnosis vs testing at a scale commensurate with regional publi

In large public health jurisdictions, only a small proportion of people infected with Salmonella are interviewed due to resource constraints. As such, sources of illness are rarely found, and preventative action not implemented. We trialled alternative methods to contact notified salmonellosis cases to collect information on exposures and risks, focusing particularly on the feasibility of SMS (short message service)-based surveillance. Over five-years period we sequentially mailed letters, sent online surveys, and then text messages. The SMS approach was designed to assess the efficiency of a

BACKGROUND: Public health surveillance is vital for monitoring and controlling disease spread. In the Philippines, an effective surveillance system is crucial for managing diverse infectious diseases. The Newcomb-Benford Law (NBL) is a statistical tool known for anomaly detection in various datasets, including those in public health.
METHODS: Using Philippine epidemiological data from 2019 to 2023, this study applied NBL analysis. Diseases included acute flaccid paralysis, diphtheria, measles, rubella, neonatal tetanus, pertussis, chikungunya, dengue, leptospirosis and others. The analysis in

Mosquitoborne disease outbreaks occur every year in the United States from one or more of the arboviral diseases dengue, West Nile, LaCrosse, Eastern equine encephalitis, and Zika (1). Public opinion communicated through traditional and social media and the Internet, competing public health and resource priorities, and local conditions can impede the ability of vector control organizations to prevent and respond to outbreaks of mosquitoborne disease. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and CDC performed a coordinated review of the concerns and challenges associated with continuation of m

BACKGROUND: Abuse or unintended overdose (OD) of opiates and heroin may result in prehospital and emergency department (ED) care. Prehospital naloxone use has been suggested as a surrogate marker of community opiate ODs. The study objective was to verify externally whether prehospital naloxone use is a surrogate marker of community opiate ODs by comparing Emergency Medical Services (EMS) naloxone administration records to an independent database of ED visits for opiate and heroin ODs in the same community.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of prehospital and ED data from July 2009 through

BACKGROUND: COVID – 19 remains a public health threat, posing negative socio-economic and health impacts globally. The Zambian government instituted control measures against COVID 19 pandemic thus conducting public health surveillance is essential to target surveillance insights. The inclusion of the COVID – 19 into the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) demands for regular analysis of data to inform decisions. This analysis was done to assess COVID – 19 descriptively, and to determine the factors associated with its mortalities in Monze district. METHODS: We conducted a retro

Since 2002, Colorado has experienced a high vector-borne disease (VBD) burden from diseases like West Nile fever, plague, and tularemia. Recent evidence underscores a lack of vector-borne surveillance and control program capacity across public health organizations, prompting our evaluation of funding and resource needs for such programs in Colorado. We assessed the needs, organizational capacity, and mitigation strategies of Colorado public health organizations' VBD programs using a convergent mixed methods study design. Between January and May 2024, we surveyed and interviewed key public heal

Mitigating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a public health priority to preserve antimicrobial treatment options. The Washington State Department of Health in Washington, USA, piloted a process to leverage longitudinal genomic surveillance on the basis of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and a genomics-first cluster definition to enhance AMR surveillance. Here, we outline the approach to collaborative surveillance and describe the pilot using 6 carbapenemase-producing organism outbreaks of 3 species: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. We also highlight ho

INTRODUCTION: Urban rodents are reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens, including Bartonella spp., which are transmitted by ectoparasites such as fleas. Zoonotic diseases caused by Bartonella often go undocumented due to confusing or subtle clinical symptoms, lack of awareness and poor diagnosis. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and diversity of Bartonella spp. by screening free-ranging rodents and their ectoparasites in the unique ecological settings of Alipore Railway Station, Kolkata, India. The station's high passenger traffic and proximity to food stalls create favourable conditions fo

BACKGROUND: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is already being adopted for the surveillance of health conditions of communities and shows great potential for the monitoring of infectious pathogens of public health importance. There is however paucity of robust data to support extensive WBE in Nigeria. This study evaluated the prevalence of clinically relevant infectious pathogens and provided antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacteria pathogens in wastewater canals in Lagos State at a single point in time.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional survey of wastewater canals in 20 Local Governm

BACKGROUND: Surveillance of blood donors is fundamental to safety of the blood supply. Such data can also be useful for public health policy but tend to be underutilized. When the COVID-19 pandemic arrived, blood centers around the world measured blood donor SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence to inform public health policy. There is now a movement toward blood centers becoming more involved in public health research and surveillance post-pandemic. However, blood donors are a healthy population and not representative of all segments of the general population. In this article, we explain how blood center

Spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsioses are endemic in Tennessee, with ∼2,500 cases reported during 2000-2012. Because of this substantial burden of disease, we performed a three-part evaluation of Tennessee's routine surveillance for SFG rickettsioses cases and deaths to assess the system's effectiveness. Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) SFG rickettsioses surveillance records were matched to three patient series: 1) patients with positive serologic specimens from a commercial reference laboratory during 2010-2011, 2) tertiary medical center patients with positive serologic tests during 20

The eruption of the Cerro Negro volcano near León, Nicaragua, on 9 April 1992 distributed an estimated 1.7 million tons of ash over a 200 square kilometer area. An assessment was conducted to evaluate the health effects on approximately 300,000 residents, using routine data obtained by the national epidemiologic surveillance system. It was found that rates of visits to health care facilities for acute diarrheal and respiratory illnesses increased in two study communities, one within and one near the disaster zone. Specifically, visits for acute diarrhea were nearly 6 times more numerous than b
