GIS walking maps to promote physical activity in low-income public housing communities: a qualitative examination.

INTRODUCTION: Walking is the most commonly reported leisure-time activity. Members of racial/ethnic minority groups and people of low socioeconomic status disproportionately live in urban environments that are perceived to be unsafe, thereby reducing opportunities for engaging in walking. We examined the use of walking maps for increasing physical activity (PA) among low-income residents of public housing sites in Boston, Massachusetts. METHODS: PA facilities, local businesses, and destinations in a walkable half-mile radius of the housing community were identified and plotted on maps by usin

The silent burden of intestinal parasitic infections and associated risk factors in Malaysian public housing schemes.

Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are largely overlooked in Malaysia's rapidly urbanising areas, while thriving in conditions of poor sanitation, environmental decline, and high population density. Studies in Malaysia are largely skewed towards indigenous communities, with few focusing on other vulnerable sectors, including the inhabitants of public housing programs (PHP)-often plagued with poor facilities and indiscriminate waste management. We assessed the prevalence of IPIs and their associated risk factors amongst occupants of PHPs in Klang Valley, Malaysia, recruiting 394 residents f

Improving the public house in Britain, 1920-40: Sir Sydney Nevile and "social work".

The "improved public house" movement in the inter-war years was a central part of the shift towards retailing by the brewing industry. An important part of the reform movement was the alliance between certain brewers, notably Whitbread, and "social workers", particularly those associated with the University Settlement movement in London. Using the papers of Sydney Nevile, the importance of a particular social milieu is outlined, calling into question attempts to align the movement to improve public houses with transatlantic Progressivism. Rather, this alliance drew upon longstanding English tr

A cross-sectional study of a program for HIV infection control among public house workers.

We report results of a cross-sectional study of a program for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection control among public house workers in Dar es Salaam. Forty percent of the 605 workers sampled had been part of this program, which included behavioral counseling and provision of condoms, for 1 year. The remaining 60% were new recruits. Program participation was associated with both enhanced condom use (p less than 0.001) and behavioral modification (p less than 0.001). Females, and specifically barmaids, were more likely to be condom users but were less likely to have changed their behav

The symbolic meanings and experience of place among residents in public housing awaiting relocation in Baltimore, Maryland.

Public housing in the United States is often depicted as areas of decay and using racialized tropes about low-income communities of color. Despite these negative portrayals, residents of public housing often characterize their place as meaningful homes where they engage in place-making and community-building to challenge their social marginalization. The presence of strong connections to community and place among residents may help explain why public housing redevelopment programs focused on demolition and forced relocation have led to mixed results for improved mental and social well-being. Extreme Heat and Firearm Violence in New York City Public Housing: The Mitigating Role of Air Conditioning.

Higher outdoor temperatures are associated with greater incidence of firearm violence in urban areas in the United States. This study adds to the existing literature base by exploring the potential mitigating role of air conditioning (AC). The setting for this repeated-measures ecological cross-sectional study is New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments, which are known to experience disproportionate rates of firearm violence. We extracted data for 2012-2017 for two types of shooting events: all New York City (NYC) shootings and those in NYCHA housing. Negative binomial mixed-effec

Early Onset of Sexual Intercourse and Parental Incarceration among African American Youth Living in Urban Public Housing.

Mass incarceration, substance use, and adolescent early onset of sex (e.g., initiate sexual intercourse at 13 years of age or younger) are social problems with disparate impacts on low-income African American communities. Two out of every five inmates in state and federal prisons are African American and the vast majority of these inmates are from low-income communities. Furthermore, this population experiences more severe consequences of substance use and abuse compared to other populations. In sum, African American youth endure the lion share of problems that mass incarceration and substance

A public health perspective to environmental barriers and accessibility problems for senior citizens living in ordinary housing.

BACKGROUND: Housing environments that hinder performance of daily activities and impede participation in social life have negative health consequences particularly for the older segment of the population. From a public health perspective accessible housing that supports active and healthy ageing is therefore crucial. The objective of the present study was to make an inventory of environmental barriers and investigate accessibility problems in the ordinary housing stock in Sweden as related to the functional capacity of senior citizens. Particular attention was paid to differences between housi

Evaluation of Federally Mandated Smoke-Free Housing Policy and Health Outcomes Among Adults Over the Age of 50 in Low-Income, Public Housing in New York City, 2015-2022.

INTRODUCTION: Effective July 2018, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development issued a rule requiring all public housing authorities to implement smoke-free housing (SFH) policies in their developments. We examined the differential impacts of SFH policy on hospitalizations for myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke among adults aged ≥50 years old living in New York City (NYC) Housing Authority (NYCHA) versus a matched-comparison population in NYC. AIMS AND METHODS: We identified census block groups (CBGs) comprised solely of 100% NYCHA units (N = 160) and compared NYCHA CBGs to a sel

Staying in Place, Staying Connected: Exploring Tie-Retention to Inform Network-Based Health Interventions in Public Housing Communities.

The COVID‑19 pandemic disrupted human relationships through public health distancing mandates and migration shifts. These changes had the potential to be especially disruptive in public housing, which are government‑funded developments for housing low‑income, frequently mobile, populations. In light of these social upheavals, our goal is to leverage this natural experiment to understand the persistence of relationships, measured as ties in social networks, within disadvantaged public housing communities. We develop a predictive model of relationship maintenance, what we call ego-alter tie-rete

Confronting misconceptions of public housing communities: A qualitative report of community-informed narratives by community members and partners.

Objectives were (a) to understand a community-informed narrative, as told by community members (CMs) and community partners (CPs), about the strengths, experiences, and perspectives of public housing communities; and (b) to analyze similarities and differences between CMs' and CPs' experiences and perspectives. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 22 CMs of public housing (ages 26-58, 100% female caregivers, 96% Black, 4% multiethnic) and 43 CPs (ages 28-78, 67.4% female, 81.4% Black and African American). Four themes were derived from the CM and CP interviews: (1) counters to public nar

Association between local public housing authority policies related to criminal justice system involvement and sexually transmitted infection rates.

The policies of U.S. local public housing authorities influence which populations have access to stable housing, an important resource for health. We assessed whether the restrictiveness of local public housing authority policies related to people with criminal justice histories-a population at high risk for HIV/STIs-were associated with HIV/STI rates at the local-level. An ecological analysis was conducted using data from 107 local public housing authority jurisdictions. The independent variable was a score that quantified the presence/absence of eight policies related to the ability of peopl

Mammography screening and breast self-examination among minority women in public housing projects: the impact of physician recommendation.

This exploratory study examined the impact of physician recommendations and other factors on mammography screening and breast-self examination (BSE) among African American and Hispanic women in public housing communities. We surveyed a randomly selected sample of low-income households from three low-income communities (n = 291), which included both African Americans and Hispanic women. Data for this paper are reported only on women who were 40 years and older head of the households (n = 120 women, including 74 Hispanics and 46 African Americans), since they meet the age criterion for mammograp

From public innovation procurement requirements to AI-enabled socio-technical architecture: a longitudinal case study in industrialized housing.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is used in digital systems that combine data, computational methods, decision processes, and organizational arrangements. This paper examines how the requirements and institutional conditions of a public innovation procurement process are reflected in the development and specification of an AI-enabled socio-technical architecture for industrialized public housing delivery. The case concerns an AI-enabled system intended to support the design, assessment, and procurement preparation of industrialized housing within a public-sector delivery process. Using a longitudi

COVID-19 and the biopolitics of stigma in public housing: dividing practices and community boundaries in pandemic times.

The COVID-19 'hard lockdowns' in Melbourne, Australia in 2020 targeted public housing estates thus trading on perceptions of risk associated with public housing as some of the most stigmatised sites in post-industrial cities. This article draws on interviews with Melbourne public housing tenants on their experience of COVID-19 lockdowns to analyse the place of stigma in residents' accounts. Pairing Wacquant et al's (2014) concept of 'territorial stigma' with sociological work on the biopolitics of stigma we consider the dynamics of stigma, tracing how it functions to delimit community boundari

A community-based participatory research study of multifaceted in-home environmental interventions for pediatric asthmatics in public housing.

Pest infestation is a major problem in urban, low-income housing and may contribute to elevated asthma prevalence and exacerbation rates in such communities. However, there is poor understanding of the effectiveness of integrated pest management (IPM) efforts in controlling pediatric asthma, or of the interactions among various interventions and risk factors in these settings. As part of the Boston-based Healthy Public Housing Initiative, we conducted a longitudinal, single-cohort community-based participatory research intervention study. Fifty asthmatic children aged 4-17 from three public ho
